Giro Stage 12: Cuneo > Pinerolo

Stage 12: Cuneo > Pinerolo

May 23rd

Looking ahead to the situation on the start line, as by then, probably nothing has happened since Sunday in the competition for the #rosa Maglia Rosa and the Senza Fine.

...T-72 said in the Stage 13 preview. And that's probably also what #pink Valerio Conti hopes for. But some may think differently, with the first real climb of the 2019 Giro coming with ~35k to go:

It's not long, but very, very steep, and if the gc contenders go for it, it could easily come down to a selection of 10 or 15 guys maybe.

Also the following descent is a steep one, although on fairly wide roads, and followed by a pan plat stretch of 20 km, where it will probably come back together a bit:

(profile via @raffilpt):

...before the riders hit the super steep, cobbled muro of San Maurizio.

The same finish (only talking about the muro, not the climb before) was also used in the 2016 edition of the race, when Matteo Trentin won from a breakaway.

(skip to 55:30 for the finale)

At least these pan flat stages are good for one thing. :D ;)

Anyhow, here's an interesting little tidbit.

These are called “Cuneesi”: chocolate and rum pralines and apparently were highly appreciated by Ernest Hemingway, when he came to Cuneo in 1954.
     Easy to see why! :D

Just 1 question: isn't this the same finish that have been used a couple of times in the Tour de France too? Edvald Boasson Hagen (for #sky at the time) won in Pinerolo in 2011. From what I seem to remember, the climb is one thing, the descent is actually kind of difficult and sent (#yellow ?) Thomas Voeckler (again, from  poor memory)  into someone's yard for a barbeque.   :D

same town, different climb. That's Colle di Pra Martino you are talking about - they did it in the 2016 Giro, but from the opposite (much steeper) direction as in the Tour. This time, it's not used at all.

Edit: here are the maps & profiles from the 2016 finish by the way - same as this year, but a bit more detailled:

not a bad stage as well though, with #bora Cesare Benedetti taking his first ever win as a pro :cool

In a result, #uae UAE had Jan Polanc and #pink Valerio Conti swap jerseys, while back in the fight for GC #movistar and Mikel Landa and #astana Miguel Lopez made up half a minute on Roglic, who lost all team mates once the first climbs came into sight. #quickstep Bob Jungels, #bora Davide Formolo, #astana Pello Bilbao, #ineos Tao Geoghegan Hart and #androni Fausto Masnada basically dropped out of GC contention.

Interesting that Yates, Nibs and Rogla didn’t go with Superman and Landani. Holding back or not able to?

Only just got to watch the stage.

Marco Haller displaying some fine usage of English language expletives and quite rightly so, with that clown.
Jan Polanc managed an impressive "fu*ker", live on Eurosport during his interview, today, too.
Is there a swearing jersey in this Giro I haven't heard about?  :D

Initially Majka, Nibali and Carapaz went with Lopez (while Eurosport was on an ad break). Roglic brought back the pack (but didn't look super comfortable), and when Landa counter attacked then, only Lopez gave it another go to follow him.

Mollema didn't look stellar btw (well, he never does, but in this case he was dropped close to the top)

One thing I have learned is never judge form from a single climb stage that comes after flat or rest days. This lot have endured several on the trot.
Tomorrow will gives us a far clearer picture.

    Stage 12 Highlights

These are becoming less and less informative, it seems. They don't even bother with GC info at all.

What also isn't captured is just how twisty and turny the final KM or so was. Had it been a crowded field, it would've been most chaotic.
