Rest Day #2: Who will win the Giro?
« on: May 27, 2019, 08:21 »
So, only six stages to go - who will take #pink?!

Team Corridore Tempo
1      #movistar      CARAPAZ Richard
2      #jumbo      ROGLIC Primoz      +0’ 47”
3      #bahrain      NIBALI Vincenzo      +01’ 47”
4      #bora      MAJKA Rafal      +02’ 35”
5      #movistar      LANDA MEANA Mikel      +03’ 15”
6      #trek      MOLLEMA Bauke      +03’ 38”
7      #uae      POLANC Jan      +04’ 12”
8      #mitchelton      YATES Simon Philip      +05’ 24”
9      #ineos      SIVAKOV Pavel      +05’ 48”
10      #astana      LOPEZ Miguel Angel      +05’ 55”

Carapaz looks fantastic so far, and he doesn't need much more time to be safe for the final time trial. But who knows what the others may pull out of the hat...

Most of the minor classifications are a bit more settled already:

#ciclamino Classifica a punti

Team Corridore Punti
1      #groupama      DEMARE Arnaud      200
2      #bora      ACKERMANN Pascal      187
3      #movistar      CARAPAZ Richard      78
4      #academy      CIMOLAI Davide      50
5      #jumbo      ROGLIC Primoz      49
6      #gironippo      CIMA Damiano      46
7      #androni      MASNADA Fausto      45
8      #movistar      ROJAS Jose'      44
9      #mitchelton      YATES Simon Philip      44
10      #bora      SELIG Rudiger      41

Assuming both make the time cut (no problems at all so far), this will be decided between Demare and Ackermann on stage 18. Also intermediate sprints on the other stages are not in reach, so whoever wins Stage 18, will probably get the jersey.

#blue Classifica scalatori

Team Corridore Punti
1      #trek      CICCONE Giulio      171
2      #movistar      CARAPAZ Richard      66
3      #androni      CATTANEO Mattia      43
4      #katusha      ZAKARIN Ilnur      42
5      #trek      BRAMBILLA Gianluca      40
6      #astana      CATALDO Dario      39
7      #androni      MASNADA Fausto      35
8      #bahrain      CARUSO Damiano      35
9      #jumbo      ROGLIC Primoz      30
10      #ineos      SOSA Ivan Ramiro      30

There are still 253 points of offer (144 of those on stage 20 alone), so Ciccione can't afford to crack completely - but he should be fine.

#white Classifica giovani

Team Corridore Tempo
1      #ineos      SIVAKOV Pavel
2      #astana      LOPEZ Miguel Angel      +0’ 07”
3      #groupama      MADOUAS Valentin      +08’ 39”
4      #ef      CARTHY Hugh John      +08’ 50”
5      #trek      CICCONE Giulio      +19’ 49”
6      #ineos      DUNBAR Edward      +20’ 57”
7      #dimension      O'CONNOR Ben      +41’ 16”
8      #mitchelton      HAMILTON Lucas      +54’ 32”
9      #sunweb      HAMILTON Christopher      +56’ 41”
10      #ineos      SOSA Ivan Ramiro      +1h 03’ 56”

This is closer than expected. Lopez is probably still the favorite to defend the jersey from last year, but there's also the chance that he may go for some kamikaze attacks to take the overall - and thereby lose it all.

Classifica 'Super Team'

Team Tempo
1      #movistar      MOVISTAR TEAM
2      #astana      ASTANA PRO TEAM      26’ 31”
3      #ineos      TEAM INEOS      30’ 16”
4      #bahrain      BAHRAIN - MERIDA      30’ 56”
5      #ef      EF EDUCATION FIRST      36’ 57”
6      #mitchelton      MITCHELTON - SCOTT      54’ 33”
7      #bora      BORA - HANSGROHE      56’ 34”
8      #androni      ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI - SIDERMEC      1h 09’ 32”
9      #trek      TREK - SEGAFREDO      1h 10’ 22”
10      #ag2r      AG2R LA MONDIALE      1h 16’ 38”

Holding the pink jersey, Movistar may change tactics a bit now and not have two guys in every breakaway anymore, but I guess they'll be strong enough to still win the team classification.

Personally, I'd like to see Roglič pull this off, and I still believe he can.

Nibali, however, is determined and crafty. He's showing decent form, and it would seem unwise to underestimate him in this race.

But based on the profile of the upcoming Stage 20, and what we've seen from Carapaz thus far, he gets my vote. And based on the length and profile of the final iTT, I don't believe it will be enough to unseat him from the overall GC.

Carapaz was 4th last year at the Giro, and less than a minute off the podium, so we know he can go the distance. He's been demonstrating remarkable form for the past couple of weeks, and according to sources, he was the rider that the peloton was buzzing about even before his slipped on the Maglia Rosa. They know it; he knows it: This is his race to lose.

But my heart is still with the Slovenian.

So the 3 things I thought would happen on rest day 1 didn't happen so now I probably shouldn't make predictions but I'm now thinking a GC of

    1 Carapaz
    2 Nibali
    3 Roglic

Yates to win a stage at some point

I have the advantage of posting this after stage 16. I voted for Nibali - he can TT at times. And he sure is looking stronger than we've seen in a while. I'm thinking Roglic and Carapaz for 2 and 3. I'm tending to Carapaz for 2nd step, but Roglic might pull something out somewhere. He could still come back.

Stage 17, tomorrow, and 20 have the extreme profiles we associate with the chance for big changes. It's still possible Hoody's prediction of a raid by Yates will come true, although I doubt it. However, an attack by Nibali or Movistar is very likely.
