Bjarne Riis pulls a rabbit from his hat yet again! :o

Virtu Cycling acquires a 33% stake in the company running #ntt, Riis becomes team manager:
https://nttprocycling.com/ntt-pro-cycling-enters-into-partnership-with-virtu-cycling

I've been doing some 'live commentary' on Twitter (this tweet is the start of a long-ish thread):
https://twitter.com/lukascph/status/1214911535161716736

One important point is that they only announced a Letter of Intent today - which isn't a binding document. That said, both Doug Ryder on one side and Riis & Seier on the other would be the laughing stock of the cycling (and, more importantly, business) world if they didn't follow through, and quickly.

You can't keep a good Carrot down!

Looks like Euskadi–Murias, which tried to become the new carrots but went belly up last year, has been subsumed by the Fundación Euskadi with 5 riders joining the team.

I see Mikel is now busy trying to get the Tour de France to start in the Basque country in 2023. He might be riding elsewhere but seems to have left his heart at home, in orange, where it belongs.

    Thanks Mikel Landa, appreciated!

Over in Italy, the new Team Monti is struggling to get their stuff together. The Italian Federation has now issued a 5 day ultimatum

    http://www.cicloweb.it/2020/01/30/team-monti-federazione-ultimatum/

Monti was initially supposed to go Continental, act as Quicksteps development team, and they already had hired some big names (Amadio, Zanetti, Belli as staff, Bissegger and so on as a rider), but Lefevere doesn't seem to be interested in putting any money into it and now already stopped the supply of equipment as the first payments for it didn't come. Antonio Monti still tries to find some sponsors, but this looks more and more unlikely to happen. With Michele Gazzoli the first rider already has left the sinking ship and moved to Colpack.

by the look of it, they have paid some money to the FCI and the project will go on - but the way I understand it (not sure about it though) as an U23 team only, and with no connection to Quickstep anymore.

This Tony Monti guy seems to be a proper dickhead btw

here's an article about it with some more details:

    https://www.ciclismoweb.net/news/team-monti-il-termine-e-scaduto-e-ora/18729

So Monti has not sent in the required documents to set up a continental team, and therefor all riders under contract are allowed to leave. Michele Gazzoli (Team Colpack), Gabriele Benedetti (Casillo Petroli Firenze) and Jakob Dorigoni (Israel Start Up Nation) picked up the opportunity to sign elsewhere, while some others decided to stay with the new "Team Monti SSD ARL" U23 team. The future of Mauro Schmid and Stefan Bissegger (who focuses on the Olympics with the Swiss national team anyway and will join #ef afterwards, so for him it's half bad) is not known yet.

I doubt that  #israel with 30 rider signed a 31st rider. Let's start the rumour it's the Sutherland replacement  :shh

Or he's signed for the development team (which has to be close to capacity too, though).

yeah, I think both teams are full (the UCI has just 15 riders listed for the academy, but Shlomi Haimy is missing on there, and he was in the training camp with the Academy over the past days, so it doesn't look like he left the team or something like that).

The article doesn't specifiy it, but maybe Dorigoni will join them as a stagiare later on?! For the moment he's busy with Cyclocross anyway

the U23 Team Monti is done as well now.

It's really a pity, because they were almost ready to race. The backpacks had already arrived

They may give it another try next year (or better not)

Does this mean that neither Corendon nor Circus could afford the Euros to pay for van der Poel’s team-building ambitions anymore, but both decided to stay in cycling, shifting to teams with lower budgets?

Not sure what to make of that, but that’s got to be a good sign for the sport, isn’t it? They must have been getting something in return from their investments that have made them willing to try again.

well, it wasn't really the best partnership I think, personally I always thought it sounded more like they would advertise for a circus called Corendon ;)

And for Corendon, there may be other reasons to leave the team as well, apart from just financial ones. Sunweb and Corendon are the same company now, with Sunweb taking over their business in Belgium and the Netherlands, so the core market they were advertising for doesn't exist anymore.

Additionally, having two teams with basically the same sponsor could have caused problems with the UCI maybe (although, on paper, it could also be the case for Bikeaid and Sunweb Devo now)

Going by the placement of the Corendon logo on the #bikeaid kit (a relatively small logo on the upper chest), Corendon isn't one of the main partners. And it's only the main partners that can't be the same between teams.

So it's all good, #bikeaid and #dsu can race against each other to their hearts' content. :cool
