Sibiu Cycling Tour

July 3rd to 7th

Sibiu will host the ninth edition of the Sibiu Cycling Tour in July 2019. With a varied route and 21 strong teams on the start list, the five-day stage race, categorised 2.1 by the UCI, will once again bring top-level cycling to the heart of Romania.

The 2019 edition offers opportunities for climbers and sprinters alike. The race starts with the traditional technical prologue through the Historic Centre of Sibiu, followed by a road stage that is expected to end in a sprint. Two climbing stages with mountaintop finishes at Bâlea Lac and Păltiniș will decide the general classification, and the race ends with a stage finishing in a sprint on the Piața Mare in the centre of Sibiu.

3 July    Prologue: Historic City Centre of Sibiu, 2.5 km

4 July    Stage 1: Sibiu - Sibiu, 191.8 km

5 July    Stage 2: Sibiu - Bâlea Lac, 163.3 km

6 July    Stage 3: Sibiu - Păltiniș, 159.4 km

7 July    Stage 4: Sibiu - Sibiu, 169.5 km

From all over the world, 21 teams will come to Sibiu to race, including two Professional Continental teams, 17 Continental teams, and two national teams:
  • #androni Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec
  • #gazprom Gazprom - RusVelo
  • #303 303 Project
  • #adria Adria Mobil
  • #akros AKROS - Thömus
  • #amore Amore & Vita - Prodir
  • #cccdevo CCC Development Team
  • #friuli Cycling Team Friuli
  • #damico D'Amico - UM Tools
  • #elkov Elkov - Author Cycling Team
  • #giotti Giotti Victoria - Palomar
  • #interpro Interpro Cycling Academy
  • #lokosphinx Lokosphinx
  • #massi Massi Vivo - Grupo Oresy
  • #monkeytown Monkey Town - à Bloc Continental Team
  • #pannon Pannon Cycling Team
  • #sangemini Sangemini - Trevigiani - MG.K Vis Vega
  • #illuminate Team Illuminate
  • #novak Team Novák
  • #teamro National Team Romania
  • #teamua National Team Ukraine
Most teams are yet to be confirmed, but the provisional start list lists some good climbers, like #androni Cattaneo, #teamro Tvetcov, #cccdevo Valter, (former winner) #adria Rogina or #interpro Guillonnet, who just recently showed a strong performance in the Mont Ventoux race, same as #amore Pierpaolo Ficara.

For the sprints the biggest names are probably #teamro Grosu, #androni Benfatto, #giotti Stacchiotti, #illuminate Laas, #adria Katrašnik and maybe (if they still bring him in) #amore Appollonio. There is also #elkov Alois Kaňkovský, who I am not quite sure of what kind of rider he is, but he seems to win stages in every race he enters.

Unfortunately #gazprom has made some changes and Vlasov is out now, which is a bit of a pity, but maybe Evtushenko can step in and deliver some good results. #friuli Friuli should also be a team to watch out for, last year in Turul Romaniei they were attacking basically every stage, from the start to the finish, and especially Bais and Venchiarutti are some really strong riders.

There will be live coverage on livestream.com again by the way - and this time not only from the finish, but also for the first hour of each stage:
    • Prologue: 18:00 - 20:00
    • Stage 1: 12:30 - 13:30 & 17:00 - 18:30
    • Stage 2: 10:00 - 11:00 & 13:30 - 16:00
    • Stage 3: 10:30 - 11:30 & 14:30 - 16:00
    • Stage 4: 15:00 - 16:00 & 18:45 - 20:45
(Romanian local time, +1 hour compared to central Europe, two hour difference for everyone in the UK)

Some intriguing stage profiles there.  :cool I've never seen any footage from this race but it looks quite promising.

Btw, who, or what, is the sponsor behind  #monkey Monkey Town?

    -----------

    Edit:

I don't want to derail this fine race thread with a separate response, but the answer from search below is not what I was expecting!  :D

Time to put on your press hat search and get the answers to the questions that others just won't dare to ask.

    1. What's going on with Tanovitchii at Novak? Still on the team according to the UCI, but zero race days...and this is after a successful 2018.

    2. Appollonio ------> #amore ? Happening or not?

    3. Valter gonna be a stagiaire at CCC ?

I can answer that one for a start: both him and Bratashchuk retired

it was an interesting start to the race, by the way. #monkeytown Ivar Slik took the prologue...

and then, just like two years ago, we had a lone escapee taking over the yellow jersey on stage one. It was #akros Justin Paroz this time, with his first ever victory

    https://twitter.com/SibiuTourEN/status/1146846354850897923

He gained a bit of time due to a closed railway crossing stopping the peloton for 1:30 or so...

...but they didn't really go full gas afterwards either, with no team taking over the chase. So it was a fully deserved victory, no matter what.

    2. Appollonio ------> #amore ? Happening or not?

not official yet, but apparently, yes.

#amore Celano crushed some climbing times in training earlier in the season btw and also showed some decent shape today, with a good attack in the end.

He couldn't quite keep up with the Androni boys once they started to put the hammer down, but by the sound of it, it's more of a lack of self-confidence that hampers him after the disastrous years with Caja Rural, and some good result could bring him back on track.

let's see how it goes tomorrow. The Silver Fox doesn't seem to be around (yet?), so maybe there's a chance for a breakaway to take it :P

There's a little mistake in the stage report (well, my stage report :angel ) btw. #giotti Onesti indeed took the blue jersey for the leader in the intermediate sprint competition and also got rewarded with it on the podium, but afterwards it turned out that he had missed the time cut after spending all day in the breakaway (so the jersey will go back to #akros Paroz instead). But well, "better one day as a lion than 100 days as a sheep", the young Italian said afterwards - so he seemed to be happy with having spent it all on the road

Were there two camera-bike crashes on the climb? It looked like it from the on-board view.

They both seemed a bit strange as usually if a moto crashes going uphill it's when it's really steep and they have to slow down a lot or even stop. Cue them toppling over. This time it just looked like regular going round the outside of corners and falling down inwards.....or maybe the camera man just dropped his camera.....twice.

IF you didnt watch the tour live today. Recommend to watch the highlights. One of the best stages I have ever seen on the flat. OPQ, Saxo and Belkin teams were amazing.
