Stage 10 Echelons

Stage points were fairly insignificant in the game compared with the issue of which group a rider was in.

THOMAS Geraint   160   for Ripley
BUCHMANN Emanuel   130   for Josedin
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   120   28 teams
MAS NICOLAU Enric   120   8
YATES Adam   100   4
KRUIJSWIJK Steven   90   5
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   90   9
VAN AERT Wout   80   1
KONRAD Patrick   58   1
EWAN Caleb   37   16
MATTHEWS Michael   32   1
BARGUIL Warren   27   10
KREUZIGER Roman   23   7
SAGAN Peter   22   2
...
PORTE Richie   -10   22
ROCHE Nicolas   -10   3
GAUDU David   -25   1
LANDA MEANA Mikel   -33   7
URAN URAN Rigoberto   -80   14

On the day

Huge, and largely unexpected, scores for most.

1   Josedin   370 (Buchmann, Bernal and Mas) (80 green points)
2   Ripley   320 (Thomas, Bernal, Barguil and Kreuziger, but Porte) (50)
3   Tobydawq   282  (35)
4   Otoxiep87   269 (25)
5   AmisVelo   245 (15)
6   Kazistuta   244 (7.5)
6   Leadbelly   244 (7.5)
8   Vladimir   241 (3)

Green points

1   Koronin   220

9   Josedin   87
10   Search   82

Ripley and Josedin are new in the top ten, Josedin with a 22 place jump.  Everyone above them stays in the same position. By getting the 10th place on the day, Bminchow has ensured that everyone is at least off the mark in this classification.

Guaranteed points

LightBing and RattaKuningas moved up a bit today, but today is almost the epitome of why I have tried to move focus away from this towards the daily fluctuations.

1   Koronin   318
2   LightBing   295

8   Scrool07   185
9   Comodoro   183
10   DJSprtsch   181

Standings

Ripley moves back to the top, and with a much bigger margin than he had when he was there after stage 6.  The six immediately behind him, and 2 more of the top ten (well, eleven, because there is a tie for 10th) were not in the top ten yesterday.  Josedin's 20 place jump was the biggest since stage 3

Some number crunching tomorrow, with a focus on the riders who are contributing those points (or maybe failing to do so).

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Rest day 1 was yesterday, but I promised some numbers, so I'll do some quickly...

    Guaranteed points

There are 23 riders who have won the points that come from 3rd on a stage or higher
ALAPHILIPPE Julian   254 pts (incl 120 yellow jersey points)   0 team
SAGAN Peter   235   for Bicycle Boy and Googolplex
    EWAN Caleb   155   16 teams
    VAN AERT Wout   152   Archieboy
    TEUNISSEN Mike   150   (40 yellow pts)   0
    VIVIANI Elia   150   0

    MATTHEWS Michael   125   LightBing*
    GROENEWEGEN Dylan   95   Total Package*
    CICCONE Giulio   90 (40 yellow pts)   0
    DE GENDT Thomas   80   Koronin*
    IMPEY Daryl   80   0
    TEUNS Dylan   80   0

COLBRELLI Sonny   75   Koronin* and RattaKunungas*
    PINOT Thibaut   66   0

    TRENTIN Matteo   63   1 BlackBandit222
    STUYVEN Jasper   59   0
    KRISTOFF Alexander   51   0
    BENOOT Tiesj   50   0

    MEURISSE Xandro   43   0

    THOMAS Geraint   38   Ripley
    NIZZOLO Giacomo   35   0
    TRATNIK Jan   35   0

So basically only one remotely popular pick is showing with any consistency here, Caleb Ewan.  I have asterisked those who have a rare pick in this list if they also have Ewan.

If I were to rank each team's guaranteed points each day, and then apply the daily position points, we would have a lot of ties, and therefore a lot of decimals, and a table like this:

This is rather experimental, and might never be seen again: it is the last tab in the spreadsheet "Guaranteed Green".

    Green points
Because this is based on the nett daily change of each team, it is meaningless to give rider scores.  Discussion at CN suggests that there is a preference for returning to the guaranteed points.  I will keep this going for this edition (it might be eventually considered an oddity like the 1906-12 tours decided by points rather than accumulated time), but we will have some kind of !vote after the tour, before the Vuelta to see what people prefer.
But, in the tradition of Mastermind, I have started so I'll finish, and in stage 10 we finally got every team onto the scoreboard.

    The main points
You have seen the team rankings (see Monday night's post): these are the riders who have earned them (only those slelected shown, riders who have no stage points and outside GC top 50 have 20 points and are not shown.

    THOMAS Geraint   488   1
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   394   28
    SAGAN Peter   344   2
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven   340   5

    ZAKARIN Ilnur   23   1
    GESCHKE Simon   21   1
    ROSSKOPF Joey   21   1

Only 4 teams have suffered a DNF so far, three with Van Garderen and one with De Marchi.

To a large extent, it has been expensive riders getting big points: there are no very effective barcgains.  The only riders (with >20 points) who are on course for a return of more than 25% are
    ALAPHILIPPE Julian
    THOMAS Geraint
    BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven
    BUCHMANN Emanuel
    CICCONE Giulio
    MAS NICOLAU Enric
    TEUNISSEN Mike
    DE GENDT Thomas
    MEURISSE Xandro
    KREUZIGER Roman
    BERHANE Natnael Teweldemedhin
    CHEREL Mikael
    KÄMNA Lennard

with Ciccone on 50.2%, and Meurisse, Thomas, Bernal and De Gendt as the only ones on more than 33%

The riders who are putting the top teams on the top

1   Ripley   1184 (Thomas, Bernal, Barguil, Kreuziger, Porte and 3 20s)
2   Josedin   1065 (Bernal, Buchmann, Mas, Kamna, Zabel, Rosskopf)
3   Otoxiep87   1053 (Bernal, Mas, Ewan, Porte, Aru, T Martin)
4   Tobydawq   1009 (Bernal, Mas, Barguil, Kreuziger, Porte, Aru, Kamna)
5   AmisVelo   983 (Bernal, Quintana, Ewan, Porte, Aru, Cherel)
6   Search   971 (Bernal, Kruijswijk, Barguil, Landa, Geschke)
7   Laarsland   967  (Bernal, Kruijswijk, Barguil, Aru, Garcia, Zabel)
8   BicycleBoy   960 (Bernal, Sagan, Uran)
9   Scrool07   948 (Kruijswijk, Quintana, Ewan, Porte, Aru, Soler)
10   Armchair_Cyclist   946 (Bernal, Ewan, Uran, Kreuziger, Reichenbach, Zabel)
10   Googolplex   946 (Bernal, Sagan, Barguil, Henao, Zabel)

Despite his humble position in the table, Comodoro merits a mention for having all 8 of his riders doing more than the 20 point minimum.

Stage 11 A fairly uneventful sprint stage.

Very little happening in GC apart from many people overtaking Ciccone, slight movement in the sprints classification, Soler sitting up, and the Zabel teams suffering the loss of a team member.

    Standings

More change today than I would have expected, but the field is fairly evenly split between have-Ewans and have-nots.  Otoxiep and Amis Velo rise from 3rd and 5th to take the lower steps on the virtual podium behind Ripley.  Shalgo is the top of three new teams in the top ten, with Los Brolin and Rote Laterne just making it.  Armchair Cyclist and Scrool both also make progress near the top, but the jump of the day is split 3 ways, with DJSprtsch and Koronin matching Shalgo's 8 place leap.

    Standings

Ripley already had a decent lead, and then he got the best player on the day as a unique pick.  Surely the lead would only get bigger, I thought.

But no: Otoxiep87 had a very modest score today, but Ripley's triple whammy of Bernal, Barguil and Kreuziger allowed him to take the lead.  Scrool is up from 6th to 3rd, and is followed by RattaKunungas, the highest placed of 4 new entries to the top ten (well done also to Kazistuta, Koronin and Carlo).  But it is Squire who gets the shout out for the fastest climbing of the day, up by 14 places.

Maybe he has been dislodged today, but insofar as Thomas looks even more likely to prevail eventually, and he must be expected to start garnering 20 point daily bonuses before long, perhaps the balance has indeed swung in Ripley's direction.

    Or maybe not...

    Standings

Yesterday Thomas did well, and the team based on him dropped from the lead.  Today he lost ground, and Ripley moves back to the top.   Shalgo, Armchair and LosBrolin behind him each move up 3 places.  Rote Laterne and DJSprtsch jump into the top ten, but they are both behind Search now, having been ahead of him this morning, due to Search's 15 place move.

Rest Day 2  15 stages done, 6 to go.

Just as in the race itself, the leader has a fair margin, but there is a bunch of hopefuls closely bunched behind, waiting for weakness.  No very big moves (6 teams share the jump of the day award by moving 3 places), but Ratta gets into second, and Total Package and Amis Velo move into the top ten.

I had intended doing a "Who has lost riders" as part of the rest day update but forgot: by doing it today, I also get to muster sympathy for the three Kelderman teams

Only ArchieBoy has had the misfortune to lose 2 men: Van Aert and Van Garderen (cost 1632, gained 154)
BikeRacer33 and BlackBandit222 also lost Van Garderen (cost 567, gained 2)
Koronin suffered almost as much: De Marchi cost 562, no points
Carlo_Algatrensig, Triley36 and Vladimir are scarcely better off, with Kelderman (510, 6)
Escaping fairly lightly, so far, are the seven Zabel teams (Armchair Cyclist, Googolplex, Josedin, Laarsland, Mellow Velo, Tigerion, Total Package) who spent more modestly (104), and got a consolatory 3 points.

    Stage 17 The Gap stage

Not much game interest in the break: one of the top ten was a unique pick, but at least that was the winner.  Other than BlackBandit's unique pick, there were a few GC gains, and rather more losses, in the lower GC positions on account of 20 minute gifts.

I am in the fortunate position of being able to wait and see what call CQ makes in terms of allocating points for today.

Let's hope we know before Sunday afternoon.

Stage 19  Thunder, hail, floods, and quite possibly pestilence after l'Iseran

Although ASO have decided that they are not giving a stage result, CQ have published, and allocated points on the basis of, a finishing order.  For some reason, while any other site I have seen have Uran 9th and Landa 10th, CQ have done it the other way around.  This is a CQ game, so 2 points for Landa, 1 for Uran.
The 20 point yellow jersey bonus comes into play in the game for the first time this edition.

Incredibly close with 2 stages left.  The top two stay where they were, but Rote Laterne moves up two places to the virtual podium, and cuts his deficit from 124 to 3.  Fauniera is the only new entry to the top ten, but around him Shalgo, Search and DJSprtsch are all going the right way.  But not as fast as Salvarani, who rose 7 places.  The highest placed non-Bernal team fell 19 places.

CQ has switched Landa and Uran around, giving very slight changes in the green points and in the scores.

Revised top ten after stage 19:
    1   AmisVelo   1776
    2   LosBrolin   1775
    3   Rote_Laterne   1774
    4   Ripley   1762
    5   Armchair_Cyclist   1757
    6   Shalgo   1742
    7   Search   1737
    8   Fauniera   1671
    8   DJSprtsch   1671
    10   Del1962   1669

The biggest gains from Alaphillippe's drop will be for Thomas, and therefore for Ripley, but I need to do other things before I do all today's number crunching.

So, while we wait for the evening race today, we should try to build some sort of consensus about secondary competitions.

When (I think) CQ Manager started the GT games, the only scores given until the very end of the race were the guaranteed points, and I started chipping in with where we would be in the standings "if the race were to finish now", which obviously becomes more accurate as the race nears its conclusion (although situations like Alaphilippe in yellow keep us guessing in that regard).

When I took over the games, I retained the guaranteed points category as a secondary competition.  But this year I replaced that with a 'green jersey' ranking based on daily position in points gained or lost towards the main game.  This seemed well enough received during the Giro, but people have said during the Tour that they preferred the old system.

There's no point in me spending time on elements that people aren't enjoying, so let's find out what you are interested in.  So it would be good if as many of you as would could answer the following, and add any other thoughts, about how we do this in future GTs.  Answer in thread or PM to me: I'll wait until Wednesday before collating the responses.

Are you interested in there being a secondary competition?

Should it be based on the stage scores, or the effect of the stage on projected scores?
(On stage 20, would you give Geraint Thomas just 15 pts for 5th, or 15 + 70 for moving from 3rd to 2nd on GC)

Should it be scored according to simply points won by each rider, or the position of each manager on the day?

If we are only awarding points for the stage, should that include leader's points (the 20 point bonus to yellow jersey wearer)?

    Any other thoughts/suggestions?

With Ewan winning the sprint, I think when the numbers are crunched we will see that the last shall be first.

First of all thanks as per usual AC for running the game. :cool

Are you interested in there being a secondary competition?

Not massively tbh[1]. I think I've voiced similar thoughts about the Green Jersey competition in the main CQ game and it's not where the prestige lies, for me anyway.

Of course even without a secondary competition, you still need to decide on which method to use to calculate the winner of each stage and for this I would go for the on the day stage scores option with no leader's jersey points.

     1. I might think differently if I was leading it!

    On the day

Only one swap in the top 50 of GC (last little bonus for those who picked De Plus), and some shifts in the points ranking, on top of the stage points.

    Final Standings

The red lantern becomes the yellow jersey, as yesterday's top two, lacking Ewan in their teams, drop away from the podium, and so the top 4 all move up 4 places.  Three teams managed a final upward adjustment of three places: Scrool07, Ratta Kuningas and Total Package.

The difference between winning and coming second (they had 5 riders in common) was Barguil overhauling Porte for 10th in GC.

Phew, that's a surprise, I was aiming for a top 10 under the condition Bernal comes out on top. Thanks again Armchair cyclist for running the game and providing the spread sheet, search for the startlist and all participants.

As for further editions of the game I do enjoy the secondary competition with guaranteed points (including the  #yellow points), but as I see it, if you prefer the "new" secondary competition I think it's only fair to have it your way. I guess most won't have a strong opinion for either option.

yeah, thanks again for organizing it. Too bad it wasn't the 21st stage which was cancelled ;) - but congratulations to rote_laterne

To be honest though, talking about the minor rankings, personally I have never really understood the green one.

    Guaranteed points

    Percentage returns
Popular makeweight William Bonnet broke positive (although the main image of him in the race, persuading Pinot to call it a day, was rather negative).  35 riders paid back at least a quarter of the investment.

    Impeccable picks
    Bernal
    Kruijswijk
    Ewan
    Barguil
    Porte
    De Gendt
    Aru
    Kreuziger
    Kamna
    Pauwels
    Bonnet

    Best possible team
As ever, there might be a better combination: please tell me if you find one.

    BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   842
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven   469
    EWAN Caleb   465
    BARGUIL Warren   198
    ARU Fabio   110
    KÄMNA Lennard   72
    BONNET William   20
    VAN MELSEN Kevin   20
    for a total of 2196

Nobody got the Bernal/Kruijswijk/Ewan trifecta, while 11 of us got two of them.

    Collective wisdom
The reported Collective wisdom team would have won, but as I explained in the post on day 1 going through the submissions data, that team was over budget, at 4202.  However, if I had removed the least popular of them to have made the cut, I could have put in Kamna losing just one popularity point, been way below the budget restriction, and still scored 1961, just below second place.
    BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   842
    ARU Fabio   110
    PORTE Richie   156
    URAN URAN Rigoberto   274
    EWAN Caleb   465
    PAUWELS Serge   22
    BONNET William   20
    KÄMNA Lennard   72

    The winning team
Well done Rote Laterne: this is how she did it.
    BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   842
    EWAN Caleb   465
    URAN URAN Rigoberto   274
    BARGUIL Warren   198
    ARU Fabio   110
    KÄMNA Lennard   72
    PAUWELS Serge   22
    FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar   20

and the difference between winning and second, there being 5 riders shared with Los Brolin, is
    BARGUIL Warren   198
    PAUWELS Serge   22
    FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar   20
    rather than
    PORTE Richie   156
    HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis   24
    MONFORT Maxime   20

    4 seasons
For those who entered the Classics and Giro games as well, are in the running for being thrashed by Tobydawq in the Four Seasons challenge if they also enter the Vuelta game.

As to the review of the secondary classifications, I note that many are not that bothered, but that the non-unanimous preference among those who are is for a stage points only, without leaders' bonuses, table.  I hope that will provide interest for those who drop out of main game contention.

    Final spreadsheet at Dropbox.

La Vuelta starts on Saturday 24th, so prices will be set on Monday 19th: I'll p[ut up the be alert for it post on around 16th.  See you all then.
