Main was 13th at Langkawi this year and most of the team have some okay results at low level exotic races the past couple of years. However the Volta is a big step up.

Semi-expected. He was on the provisional list, but was injured back at the end of June and hasn't recovered in time. Veloso is his replacement.

    Start list:

(I did try the First Cycling start list, but it's still cutting off the bottom riders/teams)

The field for the prestigious pasty white jersey does seem a bit lacking this year, but we'll see who's still in contention when I have more time at the weekend.

The Medellin guys are going to be very tired if they finish the Volta. :flustered

All of them were racing in Qinghai and finished the race. Therefore by the end of the Volta they'll have raced 24 stages in 29 days! Don't forget three of those "rest" days were taken up with travelling the 9000km from China to Portugal.

So far, Medellin having a bit of a nightmare start to the Volta, after all that traveling.

There was a big pile just before that video starts that took out the race leader and two thirds of the entire Efapel team.
They looked really peed off when Joni Brandão and his boys eventually rolled over the line.

I wouldn't have said he was the quickest there, but he got the best leadout.

Much more interesting terrain tomorrow with the stage finishing on Torre - 20.5km at 6.4%

Btw I'm not sure why some of the profiles on post #1 are not working, but it could be down to the fact TinyPic is shutting down this year.

The peloton was reduced to ~15 riders very quickly once they hit the climb, but after that the pace didn't look too nuclear. Fernandes was allowed to get a gap of over a minute while the favourites tottled along behind.

Unfortunately I missed the rest of the stage. Going by the above clip though, not too much happened before they got to the finish.

Interestingly enough Pinto had a previous mechanical not too far into the start of the climb. Some gear problem it looked like and he had to quickly swerve out of the grp of favourites. It took him a few km to make his way back up to them.

     Finally finished watching yesterday's stage.
I see that Archie's reference to a mechanical was actually Edgar Pinto getting clipped and taken out by VdM's rear wheel. Anyhow it left him with an unusable bike and a nice little 250 metre jog up 10% slope. Needless to say he was muy :angry

You can't really see what happened in that clip, but the various replays clearly captured the incident.

Perry tip-toeing through the wet corner cost him any chance of victory. However he'd attacked his breakaway companions ~10km out, so was tired and would have probably lost even without that.

The wet roads claimed a few other victims...

Luckily for them it was inside 3km.

Just watched the last few kms. Lucky they were inside the final 3kms, otherwise that crash would have shaken up the GC.
As it is, old man Veloso looked a bit banged up.
Gives a bit of faint hope that this edition might not be the W52 podium procession everyone was expecting.
