[2.HC] Tour of Britain
« on: August 27, 2019, 11:16 »
OVO Energy Tour of Britain 7th - 14th September

Stage 1  »  Glasgow  ›  Kirkcudbright (201.5km)

No whinging Scots this year. Phew! :P

Stage 2  »  Kelso  ›  Kelso (165.9km)

Ewan won here two years ago.

Stage 3  »  Berwick-upon-Tweed  ›  Newcastle-upon-Tyne (183.2km)

The race blurb counts this as an uphill finish.

Stage 4  »  Gateshead  ›  Kendal (173.2km)

We were last here in 2016, but that was after The Struggle. To see a more likely outcome go back to 2013 when Ciolek outpunched Sam Bennett.

Stage 5  »  Birkenhead  ›  Birkenhead (174.1km)

Stage 6  »  Pershore  ›  Pershore TT (14.4km)

Stage 7  »  Warwick  ›  Burton Dassett Country Park (188.7km)

Very similar stage to what the women raced back in June.

Stage 8  »  Altrincham  ›  Manchester (166km)

Rather disappointing last 30km....

    Verona

Don't see a race winner here.

As an aside, the article says this is Movistar's last stage race of the year ie. no Guangxi for them. The Chinese race had 100% WT participation last year, but so far PCS only has ten of them competing this time round.

Great line up, but not the team you need for a stage race without a meaningful climb. :fp

Understandable that teams are no showing at Guangxi when it's the one Chinese race that gets hardly any air time.
Pointless in more ways than one. Reckon it'll go the way of Beijing, next year.

I would have had Politt down as one of the big favourites, but his showing last week in Germany didn't match his form from a year ago. MWS could be a back-up plan.

So no Carapaz at the ToB.

I wonder how many of the riders needed to apply for a Visa and have been able to get one.

We have our answer now.  :secretlol

Between his missing the Vuelta, and now this, Movistar losing a ton of exposure he could've given the brand during his last hurrah.

Not exactly the plan the execs had in mind, I'm sure.

     :onfire1 :onfire1 :onfire1

    Van Der Poel

However I'll put in a caveat in that he hasn't raced a proper TT since 2014. He's done prologues (and generally done pretty well), but nothing over a longer distance.

     :onfire1 :onfire1

    Trentin and Teunissen

Chances for bonifications and both can put in a good TT when they have to.

     :onfire1

Cummings, Politt, Gallopin, Benoot, Jansen and Kamp

I was maybe a bit harsh earlier in the thread about Dimension Data having low expectations. Cummings was active in ARoN and can produce a great TT on occasion. The others listed are either slightly out of form or have a shortfall in TT-ing. They still could feature depending on how the stages pan out.

When I first had a look at the race route I thought the winner would likely be who ever is the best TTer in what I imagine would be a reduced group on the stage that finished in Kendal.

Then I remembered Van der Poel was in the race.

on paper those profiles look great for MvdP indeed, but can we say the same about his stage racing abilities?!

He has never done any race longer than four days, and even in those, he more than once won stage 1 and then couldn't quite hang on the following days.

Looked a bit like he was having a fight with a Sport Vlaanderen rider to get on someones wheel and when he lost that he gave up.

He made it to the finish avoiding the crashes and in the front group which is better than some of his recent results.

Groenewegen unable to come back after the climb.

Dowsett with a brave late attack, but died on the finishing cobbles when I thought he had it.

It seemed like a bit of a strange finish today. It looked like some of the riders misjudged where the finish was especially Teunissen with how in the last 50 metres he suddenly got out of the saddle to try to get past De Buyst
