Yep April 3rd we see if there will be new dates.

But at this stage not cancelled, but not running as planned either

Come on, admit it: that pink jersey is much better match with the bright colors of early summer and spring in the mountains. For this special edition they should make it AG2R brown.

The new route has now been finalised as stages five and six, the first on Italy’s mainland, have now been confirmed.

Not the usual, totally bland replacements either. Of note, we have:

Stage two, Sunday October 4, Alcimo to Agrigento (150km)

Stage three, Monday October 5, Enna to Etna (150km)

Stage five, Wednesday October 7, Mileto to Camigliatello Silano (225km)

The final ascent  – Valico di Montescuro – is 25km long and gains 1,500m in altitude, before a 10km downhill to the finish.

Nice to see at the very top of this page for me, DB's post: "Has it been cancelled yet?", seeing we are now just half a week from kick off.

Rai's weird and very wonderful Giro advert is bound to appeal for it's nostalgia value alone.

    https://youtu.be/3dqh0vxyZGE?t=3

Talking of Rai, it seems they following in the Tour's footsteps and are covering all the Sicily stages from start to finish.
As yet, I don't know if that will be the policy for the whole race, as I have only seen a 7 day schedule.

as moving the race to October wasn't quite enough to avoid the usual clash with Roland Garros, Eurosport on the other hand seems to be struggling a bit to get all cycling covered. Most (or all?) stages will be on Eurosport 2 only, and partly as some kind of "multicast", when there are several races at the same time (like this Sunday, for example).

    This is new.
The Giro have what they call a TV roadbook, that can be read at source or shared simply by copying the link. Basically it's the standard roadbook in English, although the text they picked is tough to read.
    214 pages of race info.

    This is new.
Not necessarily new - TV commentators have had this forever to fill the long hours when nothing happens with information on that hilltop village or the ruined church the race is passing.

But until now this wasn't released for public consumption.

On a scale of 1-10, what say ya'll so far? :slow

I'm not able to watch any of this race  :angry and the highlights are wanting, at best.

The offerings tend to be either too long, which means a lot of fast-forwarding and skipping around.

    or

Way too short, with no GC info or other pertinent facts.

And often there are spoilers embedded in the video titles themselves. :fp

Very difficult for me to experience this year's Giro.

So how has it been for the rest of you?

    3/10

A couple of things to bear in mind though.

I've only seen the stages where Ulissi, Dowsett and Guerreiro won. None of which were very good. The other six could have been amazing for all I know, but I doubt it.

Secondly a boring Giro is better than a Covid cancelled Giro. Let's be thankful we have it at all.

Like some of the above I sense that the overall performance level is somehow muted this year. There's likely a number of reasons for that: COVID, lack of racing, season plans thwarted etc but also killer bidons et cetera.

My impression is that WT teams could only get one GT squad up to a high level this year, and the good ones went to tour de France. However, this is only half the estory as missing #astana Vlasov, #astana Lopez, #ineos Thomas several key racers from the Giro lineup basically went bust before it really started. It would have been a different race with them present.

Another aspect, at least for me, is my expectations. I count myself as Italofile beyond repair and that includes too many long hours in front of the TV in May, watching the Giro landscape scroll away in all its irredescent bright early summer green glory, while munching away on any italian-inspired cuisine I can conjure up. Too much gelato and a little chianti but also buckets of healty salds and pasta. Not to mention I can go out for a ride after the racing is done on the TV and pretend I am Ricardo Carapz up the local steep hill and it helps ... at least for 70 meters. Giro de Italia is associated with this springtime rush for me.   The Vuelta is harvest time. This - 2020 reconstructed Giro - is beyond that,  on the rim of winter up here, and even if in lowland Italy that is still quite a few weeks away, it still looks dull, and that is the way I see the racing too up til this point (possible exception stage1). It is not as exciting as the Giro should be for a lot of reasons.

If there really is a bit of a squabble between #trek Nibali and #astana Fuglsang or if they just agreed to create some drama for publicity's sake, I don't know. We all know Fuglsang always looks like the better racer on paper, except if going by Grand tour results, so everyone expects Nibali will find a way to win it in week three.  Most likely downhill on ice with spiked tires while #jumbo Kruijswijk and #astana Fuglsang end up in the ditch or something equally likley to happen. it's got a ring of "heard it all before" to it, so let me point to what I think has been the most positive in this Giro so far, because he has been hiding in plain sight for a while.

It is #pink João Almeida #quickstep - what a fantastic race by him and solid team effort to back him! Quickstep suddenly look like the grand tour GC team here. They were going all in for the win with Remco Evenepoel but look, they actually have a team now. They seem well prepared, they are tactically disciplined, and their leader comes across as surprisingly strong. Granted he was abit lucky with weather on the stage 1 time trial but he still finished up there ahead of the the best pre-race mentioned GC contender starting at roughly the same time. That guy, #ineos Geraint Thomas is not a sh*tty rider on a time trial bike. If Almeida performs equally strong on the next time trials, this race isn't Nibali's to lose anymore. Nibali needs to win it first, and #quickstep can stop him.

So I am going to look forward, seeing this in light of the generation change we have seen in the TdF the two last years, and think this may be the year change comes to the admittedly more conservative Italian racing scene. This time it is #quickstep Joãozinho against the old salts....I mean salt water fish species. And that's fuelt for some more excitement over the next two weeks.

So first week dull, second week interesting, third week: snowstorm or fireworks.

    Vaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! Joãozinho para #pink!

6/10 ! (I borrowed a few points from the coming weeks just to get you a little bit more excited about this race  :angel )

Oh dear 2 teams down... (not to mention 3 leading GC personalities)...

So chances of reaching Milan - 70 / 30 in favour?  Let's hope so

Elsewhere I can't be so optimistic on Vuelta completing

But hoping above hope that Flanders proceeds and we see the simmering rivaly explode into a shootout on Sunday...

Ironically, Spain has been the trend setter with Covid and numbers there have actually started to head in the opposite direction to everywhere else.
    We may yet get lucky.

As for the Giro, I have my fingers crossed that they can maybe repeat the TDF's second rest day, which was better.
I understand they have been using the fast test, which is quick, but not as reliable.
I wonder if Kruijswijk, Matthews or both might end up as false positives, since neither had displayed a single symptom.

They also did a PCR test in the morning, which confirmed the positive result. So false positives are very unlikely.

Today Matthews' (quick) re-test was negative though. Kruijswijk's not.
