2020-22 Emerging Riders CQ Game
« on: December 31, 2019, 01:30 »
Who will win the Tour de France and the Giro in 2022?  If you know, and they have each had a less illustrious career thus far than Dylan Sutherland (who has 200 CQ points thus far in his career), you'll do OK in this.  Bernal and Carapaz have done the equivalent this year, but did you reckon them as prospects 3 years ago?

The Emerging Riders game tests your powers of prediction of the brightest talents, or most misleading early deceivers, in the sport, over a three year period.

Your Team is to consist of 18 male riders, each of whom has a maximum of 199 CQ points through their career, (so long as that total is not kept low because of results removed under doping sanctions)

There is a long list on Dropbox of people who have appeared in CQ listings in the last three years but without reaching 200 points: you may of course want to select riders who have never appeared.   That file also has a more manageable list of about 180 names: Riders who have been selected for either the main annual CQ game or the Youth CQ game, but are eligible for this one.  Consider it a longish-shortlist that you might, or might not, choose to use.

Submit your team by PM to me, before the beginning of the Tour Down Under on January 21.   As usual, names in CQ format please, with nothing else on the line. If the rider has no CQ page, then hope that SURNAME Forename is what CQ will go with (and if not I'll hopefully be able to track him down eventually).

My team has been sent to Joelsim, the manager of the first team submitted. I reserve the right to adjust it in the case of a rider emerging Gaviria-like before the deadline (although with the earlier deadline that should be less likely).

The score is CQ points gained over the next three years (the less-than-200 points before the game don't count) , the end of 2022 update being the end. I might need to be alerted to points from one year that are deleted the next. I aim to give updates monthly, but bear with me, especially when the GT games are on.

    I have finally got the Dropbox spreadsheet  up, with the names of about 3 and a half thousand riders who have scored CQ points at least once in the last three years, but have not yet reached the 200 lifetime points that would disqualify them.  I have added to the list any eligible riders at WT and PT level.  You may, of course, choose others who haven't scored in the last three years and are currently below this level.

    The Dropbox file also contains a list of riders who you might have been thinking of, but who have gained their disqualifying 200th point during 2019.

    The list can be found here.

    The very long list on Dropbox now has the much shorter list (those chosen in the other 2 games this year but eligible for this).

    Dropbox does not seem to work as handily as it did, could someone check whether the link in the OP leads to the Dropbox file that includes the 'Blue List' as a third column, and let me know.

    A week from now (the datestamp on this post) it will be a just over 10 1/2 hours since the start of the Tour Down Under.

    That means that you have 6 days, 13  and a bit hours to get your teams in.  The dropbox linked in the OP now includes the riders who are eligible for this and have been thought worthy of a place in at least one manager's opinion of a place in the Main CQ game, or the Youth game.  Not always a great recommendation, it should be said, and those games have other criteria for selection, but it might give you some ideas.

    You have about 25 hours from the datestamp of this post to get your team in.

    25 teams so far, using 129 different riders, 62 of them unique picks.  One rider is on 20 teams, and there are 11 on more than half the teams: 2 managers have selected all 11 of them, and one has none of them.

    Your three year journey starts here.

    136 different riders selected, 62 of them only once.

    Riders by popularity
    26 teams (out of 32): BAGIOLI Andrea, SIMMONS Quinn
    25: ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo, VAN WILDER Ilan
    23: EEKHOFF Nils
    21: PIDCOCK Thomas
    20: RUBIO REYES Einer Augusto
    19: BISSEGGER Stefan, VANSEVENANT Mauri
    17: KONYCHEV Alexander
    16: RUTSCH Jonas
    15: VAN MOER Brent
    13: ARENSMAN Thymen, ZIMMERMANN Georg
    12: GARRISON Ian
    11: CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander
    10: ALEOTTI Giovanni, VIVIANI Attilio

    That bunch of 18 make up the Collective Wisdom team.  Viviani was on only 2 or 3 teams before he won the first stage of Tropicale Amissa Bongo about 11 hours before the deadline, then featured on most of the late submissions and was swapped in by three managers.  Gaviria's sudden emergence during San Luis in 2015 made a big difference in that edition of the game, but I am not convinced that beating Lorrenzo Manzin once is equivalent as a harbinger to beating Cavendish twice back then.

    The non-CW riders are:

    9: HÄNNINEN Jaakko, LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro, MOLENAAR Alex

    7: RODRIGUEZ CANO Carlos

    6: HAILU Biniam Girmay, INKELAAR Kevin

    5: ALBA BOLIVAR Juan Diego, BAIS Mattia, CULLAIGH Gabriel, HONORE Mikkel Frølich, JORGENSON Matteo, OLDANI Stefano, VERMAERKE Kevin

    4: COVI Alessandro, DONOVAN Mark, JOHANSEN Julius, NIEUWENHUIS Joris, OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro, RIES Michel, TEJADA CANACUE Harold Alfonso, WEEMAES Sasha

    3: ANIOLKOWSKI Stanislaw, BOUCHARD Geoffrey, GARCIA SOSA Jhojan Orlando, GARRISON Michael, HOLMES Matthew, PEAK Barnabas, QUARTERMAN Charlie, SAVINI Daniel, THIJSSEN Gerben, VILLALOBOS HERNANDEZ Luis Ricardo

    2: BARTHE Cyril, BENNETT Sean, BRENNER Marco, BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago, ELOSEGUI MOMEÑE Iñigo, EVANS Alexander, FOUCHE James, GOOSSENS Kobe, HAILEMICHAEL Mulu Kinfe, HOLLMANN Juri, JERMAN Ziga, PEÑA JIMENEZ Jesus David, PEÑALVER ANIORTE Manuel, PICCOLO Andrea, PRICE-PEJTERSEN Johan, QUICK Blake, RENARD Alexis, RIVERA VARGAS Brandon Smith, SLEEN Torjus, TIBERI Antonio, TRACZ Szymon, VERMEERSCH Florian, WILLIAMS Stephen, WRIGHT Fred, ZUKOWSKY Nickolas

    Despite Alex Peters being a very under-performing member of the Collective Wisdom team in the 2016-18 game, and scoring a grand total of zero across three years in the following edition, Lukas still has confidence in him.

    I had expected to see far more picks for Marco Brenner, with people assuming that he would do enough in years 2 and 3 to make up for what might be an insignificant score in year 1.  Did people not realise how good a pick Evenepoel was in the 2017-19 game, despite only scoring in year 3, (or Bernal in 2015-17, when he was in the best possible team) or is the hype considered overblown?

    The most popular of those three is only on 3 teams.  22 popularity points (as I will be posting shortly) out of 18 riders must be a record.

    which might amount to "How likely is it that some of the riders might be selected again in the 2021-23 version?"

    Despite Alex Peters being a very under-performing member of the Collective Wisdom team in the 2016-18 game, and scoring a grand total of zero across three years in the following edition, Lukas still has confidence in him.

    Alex was out of the sport for some years, now back on a Conti team with a good calendar. He could score big (as in, 200-300 points) this year, get a pro deal (not with one of the big WT teams, but on the second or third rung of the ladder) for 2021, and continue scoring for years 2 & 3.
    Or he could do nothing at all and retire, again, by August.
    It's a gamble. :dizzy

    I see picking juniors as being against the spirit of the game.
    Picking promising first-year U23s straight out of the junior ranks? Absolutely - see Quinn Simmons.
    Picking guys who can't score yet because they're still racing against 17-year-olds? No, thanks.

    Yes, in hindsight, picking Evenepoel for 17-19 would have been a good idea. But where's the fun in that?
    Also, I firmly believe that >95% of riders only become 'good' (as in, scoring lots of points consistently) after a couple of years in the U23 ranks, and normally need 1-2 years after getting a pro contract as well. People like Evenepoel or Bernal are exceptions that prove this rule.

    And picking riders just based on junior results is too uncertain: Marco Brenner could be the next Evenepoel or Pogačar ... but he could also be the next André Steensen. ;)

    Plus, every single point Alex Peters scores this year is a point that Marco Brenner etc. couldn't have scored. :P

    2nd is the first loser Lukas.
    Should I have swapped the junior world champion with just about anyone, only to win a start-of-game ranking I didn't even realise I could win? Nah. :shh

    Well, if you only knew by 2016 that this defender of Anderlecht was going to be dropped, then retire from football, start with cycling and become the reincarnation of Merckx...
    But you know, that would be very easy. Where's the fun in it?  :D

    It will only be (slightly) impressive if I don't finish bottom. No Trudgin this year though.

    Fair point. :P

    Still, of your unique picks, I had Ärm, Cañaveral, Drizners, Kooistra, and Wouters on my shortlist.
    Granted, a 'shortlist' of ~200 names. :D

    Inspired by a post in the corresponding thread on CN, I have added a Team Similarity tab, and discovered that the highest degree of similarity of riders is 13.

    A number of combinations of the top 5 teams in the rider popularity table combine in that way:
    Laarsland and Los Brolin,
    Laarsland and Madrazo,
    Laarsland and Northerner,
    Los Brolin and Madrazo,
    Los Brolin and Skidmark,
    Madrazo and Northerner,
    Madrazo and Skidmark

    but strangely Fivezzz and Squire also match 13.

    Madrazo has 17 of the Collective Wisdom team, missing only Jonas Rutsch.

    Not necessarily: the Collective Wisdom team came top in the first edition of this (2014-16), but since then has come 2nd, 6th, and 9th in the most recently finished iteration.

    Does that mean that our picks, collectively, have become worse as time went on? :D

    No, because I was looking at the wrong column in my history of the game sheet.  Those were the performances of the Collective Ignorance teams (riders chosen by no one at all, not even Leadbelly), so we have done better in not leaving out good scorers.

    The Collective Wisdom positions have been 13th, 5th, 5th and 7th (so becoming consistently reasonably good but nothing special after a very mediocre start).

    My team...

    - collective wisdom -

    26 -> Andrea Bagioli, Quinn Simmons.
    25 -> Camilo Ardila, Ilan van Wilder.
    23 -> Nils Eekhoff.
    21 -> Thomas Pidcock.
    20 -> Einer Rubio.
    19 -> Stefan Bissegger, Mauri Vansevenant.
    16 -> Jonas Rutsch.
    15 -> Brent van Moer.
    13 -> Thymen Arensman.

    2/3 of the team is collective wisdom. Not much to say here, these are the riders that everybody knows.
    Eekhoff, Rubio, Rutsch, Van Moer (98), Bagioli, Ardila (99), Van Wilder (00) and Simmons (01) are WT neos. Bissegger (98), Vansevenant and Arensman (99) will arrive midseason. Only Pidcock (99) has no pro contract, but when he wants, he'll go WT.

    - differential picks -

    9 -> Juanpe Lopez.
    7 -> Carlos Rodriguez.
    4 -> Mark Donovan.

    Other three WT neos. Juanpe (97) and Carlos (01) are my spanish fee. One is the oldest in the team, the only one who is no longer u23. The other is one of the youngest, coming straight from junior to WT. Donovan (99) has been poorly chosen, due to his bad last season. But I mantain my faith in him, as I did also with Arensman.

    And now, I get crazy:

    2 -> Marco Brenner, Andrea Piccolo, Antonio Tiberi.

    Piccolo and Tiberi (01) are the two italians supertalents arriving to u23 level. Both excell in the time trials and are also great climbers. Both will pass with Colpack. And both have already pro contracts signed for 2021: Piccolo with Astana, Tiberi with Trek.

    Brenner (02) is a tricky pick. He's still a junior, so he'll have just two years to earn points. But so far, he's been so promising I had to choose him. I believe he can be in the best possible team in 3 years, but there are also a lot of risks. In theory, next year he'll jump to WT with Bora.
