Today, I woke up to the news that Matthew Holmes won on Willunga Hill! :o

I thought he'd be a decent pick and was confident he would score points. I didn't expect he'd start in January by winning a stage of a WT race! :cool :D

Year 1, Month 1 Up to 2nd February

The first update is probably of little significance to the final scores, but offers an early slice of pride, and gives me a few mouth in heart moments as I see whether the spreadsheet does what it should.

Top ten scorers who were selected:
HOLMES Matthew   65 points, mainlyfor finally dethroning Porte on Wilunga Hill, for Del1962, hfgon1 and Lukas CPH
HAILU Biniam Girmay   45 (two stage wins and a third in Tropicale Amissa Bongo) for 6 teams
VIVIANI Attilio   34 (stage and some other points in Amissa Bongo)   10
OLDANI Stefano   32 (5th in Trofeo Playa de Palma)   5
BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago   23 (19th on GC in TDU); Josedin, Otoxiep87
RIVERA VARGAS Brandon Smith   20 (4th in Colombian TT nat's); hfgon1, Josedin
VANHOUCKE Harm   18 pts   1 teams
    DINA Marton   16   1
    DRIZNERS Jarrad   16   1
    PEÑALVER ANIORTE Manuel   16   2

but TESFATSION Natnael Ocbit and LEVASSEUR Jordan both scored over 100 this month, and FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo, MORIN Emmanuel, MULUBRHAN Henok and PAREDES AVELLANEDA Cesar Nicolas got 50 or more.  They might be serious misses, or they might never reach these heights again, but history tells us that most of us will have some members of our teams who will score fewer points in the three years than these guys have this month.

    Standings
Everyone is off the mark (mainly through popular picks Viviani, Rutsch and Cepeda), and our first leader is a newcomer to these games.

1   hfgon1   150 ( mainly from Holmes, Hailu and Rivera)
2   LukasCPH   138 (Holmes and Viviani)
3   Josedin   99 (Viviani, Buitrago, Vivera)
    3   Skidmark   99  (Hailu, Viviani)
    5   Kazistuta   94   (Hailu, Viviani)
    6   AmisVelo   92 (Hailu, Oldani)
    7   Del_1962   85
    8   Blues_in_the_Bottle   81
    9   SafeBet   71
    10   Armchair_Cyclist   65
    11   MuddyWaters   64
    11   Squire   64
    13   Scrooll07   63
    14   JonEzeitza   62
    15   Fivezzz   59
    16   Nicosix   55
    17   AlyKaptan   54
    18   Koronin   47
    19   Madrazo   44
    19   Otoxiep87   44
    21   Northerner   40
    22   Leadbelly   34
    23   LosBrolin   32
    24   Comodoro   31
    25   Cordi   29
    26   RoteLaterne   24
    27   Laarsland   21
    28   Archieboy   19
    28   Joelsim   19
    28   Ray10   19
    31   Karaev   14
    32   Ludwigzgz   11
    33   Vladimir   10
       CollectiveWisdom   54
       CollectiveIgnorance*   839

    *  For those new to the updates, or who never quite got their heads around it: the Collective Ignorance team is the 18 highest scoring riders that none of us picked.  Unlike the other teams, this team changes its make-up as the game progresses, and so is always exceptionally good early on in the game.  It drops back into the same range of scores as most of us by around the middle of year two, but it serves to draw our attention, and our embarrassment, to those we omitted.

Updates should be roughly monthly, but don't be surprised if there are longer gaps when a GT game is in progress.

Don't gloat or despair on the basis of this, this is no more than looking for a position at the beginning of a long ride.

Ha, fat chance. Compared to this month's haul in the 18-20 and 19-21 games, this is an excellent start for me!

    Year 1, month 2 3rd February to 1st March
Top scorers (of those we have picked)
FEDOROV Yevgeniy   195 (stage win and 2nd on GC in Langkawi, stage in Rwanda)   for Vladimir
HAILU Biniam Girmay   129 (2nd in Laigueglia, stage podiums in Rwanda) for 6 teams
BRUNEL Alexys   107 (stage win and 3rd overall in Etoile de Besseges) for Archieboy
CEPEDA HERNANDEZ Jefferson Alveiro   59 (6th in Vuelta a Murcia) for Blues in the Bottle
HAILEMICHAEL Mulu Kinfe   55 (stage win and 9th on GC in Rwanda) for Amis Velo and Ludwigzgz
    BAGIOLI Andrea   45   26
    HONORE Mikkel Frølich   40   5
    BENNETT Sean   39   2
    VANHOUCKE Harm   38   1
    WIRTGEN Luc   26   1
    HEIDEMANN Miguel   25   1

And the unchosen Tesfatsion is again the best scorer of the month, and would already justify his place in most final teams, and Max Stedman will be considered to have been a bit of a miss too.

    This month
1   Vladimir   314 (Fedorov and Bagioli)
2   AmisVelo   278 (Hailu, Hailemichael and Bagioli)
3   SafeBet   244 (Hailu and Bagioli)
    4   Skidmark   240
    5   Nicosix   203
    5   Archieboy   203

    32   Leadbelly   46
    33   Ray10   28
       CollectiveWisdom   121
       CollectiveIgnorance   1074

    Standings
I am sure there won't be a bigger change of position than Vladimir going from last to 4th this month.  Having just won the 2017-19 edition, Amis Velo takes the lead here, and whatever else happens between now and the end of 2022, Nicosix will be able to say that he too was among those who was at some stage in the top ten.

Year 1, Month 3, 4, 5 and possibly more 2 March to at least end May (but really only races up to 14 March)

DE DECKER Alfdan   40 (3rd in GP Jean-Pierre Monseré) for Alykaptan
WAERENSKJOLD Søren   38 (Won Tour of Rhodes and 2 stages) for Ray10
WOUTERS Enzo   12 (10th in GP Jean-Pierre Monseré) for Leadbelly
    MÄRKL Niklas   9   1
    ANIOLKOWSKI Stanislaw   8   3
    MEEUS Jordi   6   1
    BARTHE Cyril   5   2
VAN DEN BERG Marijn   5   1
    JERMAN Ziga   3   2
    ÄRM Rait   1   1
That's all the scoring riders in this period.

    1   AlyKaptan   48
    2   Ray10   41
    3   Leadbelly   21
    4=   Comodoro   9
    4=   Joelsim   9
    6   Nicosix   8
    7=   Fivezzz   5
    7=   RoteLaterne   5
    7=   Scrooll07   5
    10=   Everyone else   0
       CollectiveWisdom   0
CollectiveIgnorance   263 (Nicholas White with 145 from Tour of Taiwan, David Dekker with 55 including 3rd in Le Samyn, and Jaume Sureda, 55 also from Taiwan)

    Standings

Alykaptan rises 7 places, the other teams in double figures this month are slightly less far adrift than they were. No changes of position above Scrool in 12th, so Amis Velo has the pride of top spot for about 3 months at least.
    1   AmisVelo   370

I'm curious about next year game.
With the calendar reduced because of the covid, in one hand there will be less obvious new names, and in the other hand some of the old guys will remain under 200. Will this mean more different teams?

I suspect there will be more 'must haves', as riders show their potential but without enough races to break the 200 limit, but who knows.

I suddenly remembered this morning that I have all these emerging riders games sitting dormant for months: hope to get them updated in the next few days.

    Year 1, months 4, 5, 6 and 7 (15 March to 2 August)

Very slowly waking out of COVID hibernation: the nearest we have to a headline result after 20 weeks is some Bulgarian 2.2s

BALLESTEROS CANOVAS Miguel Angel   31pts (GC 3rd in both Steps of the Romans and Tour of Bulgaria) for Koronin
BISSEGGER Stefan   15pts (3rd in national ITT)   19 teams
WAERENSKJOLD Søren   15 (3rd in national ITT) for Ray10
ANIOLKOWSKI Stanislaw   12 (from Dookola Mazowsza and Puchar Ministra Obrony Narodowej)*    3 teams
HAILEMICHAEL Mulu Kinfe   6pts   2 teams
    BAGIOLI Andrea   5   26
    CASTRILLO ZAPATER Jaime   5   1
    DINA Marton   5   1
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro   5   9
    ADAMIETZ Johannes   4   1
    JACOBS Johan   4   1
    TRACZ Szymon   2   2
    ÄRM Rait   1   1

Remy Rochas was the best of those we all missed, 4th in Sibiu.

    * No, me neither ( and yes, I copied and pasted rather than trying to spell those races)

And can I say how delighted I am to discover that there is a rider called Right Arm (well, Rait Ärm, but...)  Probably came on the scene too late to feature in Courage beer adverts though.

1   Koronin   45 (Ballesteros, Lopez, Bagioli and Jacobs)
    2   Ray10   35 (Bissegger, Waerenskjold and Lopez)
3   AlyKaptan   32 (Bissegger, Aniolkowski and Bagioli)
    4   Comodoro, Cordi, Northerner   25
    7   Leadbelly   24
    8   Archieboy   22
    9   Ludwigzgz   21
10   Fivezzz, Joelsim, Josedin, Karaev, LosBrolin, LukasCPH, Madrazo, MuddyWaters, RoteLaterne, Skidmark, Squire, Vladimir   20
    22   Nicosix   17
    23   AmisVelo   16
    24   hfgon1, Kazistuta   15
    26   Blues_in_the_Bottle, JonEzeitza, Scrooll07   10
    29   Armchair_Cyclist, Laarsland, SafeBet   5
    32   Del_1962, Otoxiep87   0
       CollectiveWisdom   20
       CollectiveIgnorance   106

    Standings

Those who have stumbled out of the lockdown first were very low in the table moving into it, but Ray is off the bottom, and Koronin gets a 8 place jump.  At the still possibly of limited relevance leading end of things, Archieboy enters the top ten and Nicosix moves up within it.

    1   AmisVelo   386
    2   hfgon1   363
    3   Skidmark   359
    4   Vladimir   344
    5   SafeBet   320
    6   LukasCPH   316
    7   Nicosix   283
    8   Kazistuta   282
    9   Archieboy   244
    10   Blues_in_the_Bottle   242
    11   Fivezzz   238
    12   Scrooll07   231
    13   Del_1962   230
    13   JonEzeitza   230
    15   AlyKaptan   228

    17   Armchair_Cyclist   207
    18   Squire   195
    19   Joelsim   185
    20   Koronin   181
    21   LosBrolin   178
    22   MuddyWaters   176
    23   Comodoro   174
    24   Madrazo   173
    25   Ludwigzgz   171
    25   Northerner   171
    27   RoteLaterne   162
    28   Cordi   145
    29   Karaev   143
    30   Laarsland   142
    31   Leadbelly   125
    32   Ray10   123
    33   Otoxiep87   105
       CollectiveWisdom   195
       CollectiveIgnorance   1854

We should be back to monthly updates, assuming the resumption lasts, from now, but a month from now the Tour de France will be underway, so I might be a bit delayed.

    Spreadsheet, hopefully, here.

    Main selected riders this month
BISSEGGER Stefan   108pts (5th in Giro Toscana, 12th in BinckBank)    19 teams
VERMEERSCH Florian   93 (Antwerp Calssic win, top 20 in BinckBank)   Otoxiep and Squire
COVI Alessandro   87 (2nd in Appennino, 8th in Coppa Sabatini)   4 teams

       CollectiveIgnorance   240

    Standings
Still early days and close scores, but Skidmark moves up to the top, and Bissegger looks like a serious omission for Amis Velo.  Vladimir makes a good jump from 6th to 2nd, and Muddy Waters has his Mojo Working, Can be Satisfied, and might be celebrating with Champagne and a Reefer and feeling like a Mannish Boy (ok, I'll stop now) as he moves into the top ten.

None of this cohort were in the Tour, but one of them has already got a podium in the Giro, so next month might see a bit more scoring.

Year 1, month 10-11 and effectively to the end of the year: 5th October to 15th November.

The strangest October/November though, with Giro, Vuelta and a sprinkling of Spring Classics.  But not many lower level races

but none of us got the best scoring eligible rider for this period: SIRIRONNACHAI Sarawut, who took 133 points from the Tour of Thailand!

When the end of year download is available, I'll do another update with the Year 1 data, but don't expect much change.  It has been the smaller races that have suffered most from cancellation, and which are usually important in year 1 of these games: this is not going to be a typical edition.  The leading scores at the end of Year 1 in previous editions have been 3777 to 4687 points.

If you just can't wait to see more numbers, here they are.

I reckon I'll have to abandon my own "CT or lower" rule for next year's edition. :(

If I start doing a VR vs CN in this, as I have in some of the other games, you might come under pressure to do that.

    Year 1, month 11-12

In the end of year update, none of the selected riders gained any late points, or lost any in adjustments, but Moise Mugisha got enough points from winning the GP Chantal Biya in Cameroon to appear in the top 18 unselected riders list, the Collective Ignorance team, (and put himself out of eligibility for the next edition of the game), so the CI team is the top, and only, scorer this session.

Best possible team thus far, made up of the 18 top eligible scorers in the crazy mixed up season that was 2020:
    Rider 2020 points Teams
    BAGIOLI Andrea      377      26
    TESFATSION Natnael Ocbit      292      0
    HAILU Biniam Girmay      277      6
    EEKHOFF Nils      245      23
    KACZMAREK Jakub      226      0
    FEDOROV Yevgeniy      210      1
    VERMEERSCH Florian      208      2
    SIMMONS Quinn      205      26
    ANIOLKOWSKI Stanislaw      197      3
    TOUPALIK Adam      182      0
FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo      172      0
    HONORE Mikkel Frølich      170      5
    WHITE Nicholas      161      0
    GUERNALEC Thibault      157      0
    ZIMMERMANN Georg      147      13
    MORIN Emmanuel      146      0
    BISSEGGER Stefan      145      19
    KOOIJ Olav      144      0
That is a total of 3661 points.  The leading score is 49.4% of what is possible, which is quite a lot less than previous years, but 2020...

Leading teams, and the members of the best possible team that they selected:
1 Vladimir 1808 Bagioli Eekhoff Fedorov Simmons Zimmermann Bisegger
2      AmisVelo      1751   Bagioli Hailu Eekhoff Simmons Zimmermann
3      Skidmark      1744    Bagioli Hailu Eekhoff Simmons Zimmermann Bisegger
4      JonEzeitza      1732    Bagioli Eekhoff Simmons Honoré Zimmermann
5      LukasCPH      1685    Bagioli Eekhoff Simmons Honoré Bisegger
6      AlyKaptan      1679   Bagioli Eekhoff Simmons Aniolkowski Bisegger
7      Nicosix      1672   Bagioli Hailu Eekhoff Simmons Aniolkowski
8      Squire      1668   Bagioli Eekhoff Vermeersch Simmons Bisegger
(the 9th placed team is another 58 points behind, but with 2 years to go and much bigger point hauls likely, other teams could certainly be contenders)

If I start doing a VR vs CN in this, as I have in some of the other games, you might come under pressure to do that.

    I had a brainwave.

I could enter my team on CN and drag their average down. The enemy within and all that. :D

You could include there a PC team. Almost 1/5 of the participants come from Parlamento Ciclista, the spanish forum   :cool

I think we're currently 7 playing the emerging, although for this one Kryvo missed the date.
