It's the very short afternoon stage which does the damage. Cepeda and Mannion finished 5+ minutes down.

Next race up, same region - but a whole lot of levels up even if it is just a 2.1 race:

    2020 Tour de L'Ain

    Featuring
    #ineos Bernal/Froome/Thomas
    vs
     #jumbo Roglic/Kruijswijk/Dumoulin

The hardest GC lineup ever for a 2.1 race? there's at least 7 previous Grand tour winners present, not counting repeat victories ...

The race features three shortish (140km) stages - a flat first stage, this Friday (there aren't that many sprinters here from the good teams, so I was thinking about giving it to #quickstep Hodeg directly. However, someone from #israel will give him some contest, just remains to be seen if that will be Greipel or Hofstetter.

The next two days features climbing, and lots of it.

    Stage two (Saturday
) goes: Col de Montgriffon, Col de Cuviallat, Côte de Giron, Col de Menthières and finish up to Lélex Monts
These climbs are low latitude, long (~10km) and not steep climbs.  Perfect to get those climbing legs going. The Cuviallat is shorter than the rest at 3.4 km.

Stage three, Sunday: possibly the best climbing before the TdF this year:  longer and steeper climbs compared to Saturday up the Selle de Fromentelle (11km, 8.5%), Col de la Biche (6.4 km 8.9%) and finally the Grand Colombier - numbers not provided but it is a whole lot longer and steeper.  Most of the stage is identical to the TdF stage 15, I believe. So this is the main dress rehearsal. Teams will be there, mountains are always there, but I don't think there will be any any lights, camera, action ?

Is it gonna be on some TV channel??

Watch out for #ag2r home boys, their Chambery base is just down the road and even if they are fielding a 2nd rate squad with no Bardet, they may want to put on a show...day 1 breakaway with Nans Peters? Pierre Latour got something to show?

There are outsiders among the climbers, but the GC win will be #ineos or #jumbo for sure. Rather than looking for winners this race is good for looking at who develops nicely and who struggles.  I am looking at #jumbo Tom Dumoulin, #uae Fabio Aru, #trek Richie Porte (no Grand Colombier descent for you!), #israel Dan Martin, #sunweb Sam Oomen, #lotto Carl Fredrik Hagen and #arkea Nairo Quintana.

I am not surprised if there are late changes to the start list as the virus is on the rise again in France and neighboring countries.

Eurosport holds the rights, but not all stages are broadcasted live in all countries, by the look of it. In Germany I only get stage 1 and 2 for example, while all three seem to be live in the UK.

Today's finale is not quite flat by the way, the last bump could thin out the field a bit at least

On paper, Hodeg is probably the quickest guy in the race, but this may not be to his liking. Could be a good finish for #teamch Bissegger

This last climb was really tough with 8-9 kilometers at 8%. It was quite hanging and it was very hot. I think everyone was a little tired after the two stages the day before . It was a tactical race between the riders in the general classification. I just played the stage victory. I tried to play my card well. Fortunately, I was able to attack in the last kilometer and win this stage.

Yesterday's stage 1 in Tour de L'Ain was, as expected, a #quickstep stage - but not (as foreseen by Search) a Hodeg stage. I must admit I hadn't even noticed they also had Andrea Bagioli - and they are good at making new winners.

The winner in yesterday's sprint thus slightly surprising, but the number 2 then?   #jumbo Primoz Roglic  :S (and the new lead out guy, Tom Dumoulin - on 4th).

I give up predicting this race, watch out for #quickstep Hodeg in stage 2 today  ;)
    (and #ag2r Clement Champoussin)

Impressive stuff from the American! Just a shame he had that one bad half-day.

I had semi-written off Rolland pre-race, but he came good.

Second place Guerin had some interesting comments to make. ;)

Phew...I wouldn't translate his words exactly like that  :angel , but on such a busy day  :-x

The second stage of Tour de L'Ain and only the best climbers remained in the front group. Surprise guy of the day probably #ineos Castroviejo who turned out to be #ineos Bernal's last domestique (remember, Bernal also has a guy named Froome and another named Thomas to help him). Castroviejo he did a fantaastic job at it, neutralizing a very dangerous attack by #jumbo Kruijswijk before Bernal himself closed to gap.

Roglic got the race right where he wanted it to go, with a lead on Bernal from the first stage, and more red muscle fibers than Bernal, he controlled the group with his domestiques and then won the sprint in a comfortable way.

Maybe there will be a new sprint on the Grand Colombier tomorrow...the racing has been good so far in this race!

Mollema broke something on his bike (pedal, cleat, gear hanger or something) when he was opening up his sprint and may get his seconds back in the GC, thanks to the 3 km rule.

Another win for Gross. He also "won" the sprint in the peloton yesterday.

Herr Gross is back in action on Wednesday (provisionally at least). He's down to race another Polish stage race - Tour Bitwa Warszawska 1920. It starts with a short prologue and the rest of the stages are all very flat.

The competition, while containing some of the usual suspects, does include some bigger challenges in Modolo (this is what he was skipping MSR for), Hoelgaard and Team Jolidon (!). Jumbo Devo will also be there, but no sign of Kooij. Their first H2H will have to wait.

Flat, but according to the ICA race preview each stage contains multiple dirt sections. Of course there are dirt sections and there are dirt sections.

edit: according to a procycling.no report, the race doesn't have the UCI-required "Covid-19 coordinator" yet (maybe on from tomorrow) and by the sound of, not all teams conducted tests

Short sprint stage this morning (it might even be under way) and then the TT this afternoon.

Despite his poor season so far (by Deceuninck standards) Hodeg should still be the favourite. On paper Barbier might give him a run for his money but will be hampered by having other sprinters as team mates rather than dedicated leadouts.

There's not really too many other names that could challenge today for the win. Modolo is coming back from injury (Meisen might deputise), Laas will probably get the nod today for Bora over Drucker, Resell I presume is the Uno-X sprinter and then there's Stacchiotti for Vini Zabu, De Bie for Bingoal and Karaliok for Gazprom. The Belarusian stagiaire is a world champion on the track in scratch!

Finally down in CT Toupalik is in good form for Elkov and Milan scored a stage win at the Baby Giro the other week ahead of the WT bound Meuss and Stewart.

A bit of a drag up to the line which wasn't obvious on the profile. There were some crashes on one of the descents earlier in the stage which put paid to a few chances.

Short TT this afternoon with the favourites being Lampaert, Steimle, Sutterlin, Haga, Hansen and a bunch of Uno-X riders.

Despite the jagged profile, it didn't turn out to be such a selective day. Sunweb teamwork was to the fore again as attacks from Power and Arensman put the pressure on Deceuninck and Denz was the one to profit with just his second pro win.

Laaasu with his second win of the week. Nevertheless with both Meeus and Walls joining Bora next year there is no guarantee he'll get an extension.

A timely win for the Frenchman. He said in a post race interview that he'd had good legs the other sprint days and was frustrated that he wasn't able to show that. Still no win for Hodeg this year.

Steimle lost the jersey at one of the intermediates, but gained it back at the next one.

A sweet little French 1.1 classic for you tomorrow. It is another contender for "misnamed race of the year" as Paris-Camembert actually neither starts nor finishes nor passes anywhere near Paris! It does pass through Camembert at least, but from the complete opposite direction, as the race starts close to the coast, east of Le Havre. If  you want to ignore this geographical chaos, perhaps the local specialty, Calvados, in ample quantities and some of that cheese too can help......

I present to you, the race profile, full of nice little hills:

The startlist contains a lot of very interesting riders and teams that didn't go to Le Tour:

I mean, of course, I want to see #unox Jonas Iversberg (the U-23 Euro champion from Ploay) or Markus Hoelgaard crush everyone...
but there are a few others....

    #ag2r Alexis Gougeard
    #riwal Andreas Kron
    #gazprom Sergei Chernetsky
    #arkea Romain Hardy
    #nippo Benjamin Girmay
    #wanty Fabien Doubey

and in case it comes down to a sprint (I really doubt it, there's insanely many hills on the parcours and it is a longish race too): the old #arkea Nacer Bouhanni vs the young #riwal Arvid de Kleijn ?

If you want every little detail, fill your cup, sit back and relax:
