I was shocked to learn that Andrei Tchmil had suffered a cancerous tumor and underwent a successful surgery for its removal.  :o

I had read about it. Hard to believe he is now 57.
Really glad he could get operated upon in Italy, as already here in the UK cancer treatment has pretty much been postponed because of coronavirus.
Hard to believe, when cancer is a certain killer but corona far from it.

Did you see the most recent interview with him (in French with English subtitles) by Johan Bruyneel that I linked in another thread?

Quite disappointing of Andreï to accept an interview with these guys ! But apparently, Armstrong claimed that Andreï wasn't nice to him and Andreï didn't deny it.  :lol

It also struck me that he could get treated in Italy, especially in Brescia, at the epicenter of the virus.

I saw a recent story about Bruyneel that dates back from the 2018 Tour of Flanders. He met with Edwig Van Hooydonck and wanted a selfie with him.

Van Hooydonck then said he saw that picture in Het Nieuwsblad with a news that made it sound like the two were the best of friends as though nothing had happened (regarding the dark side in the 90's of course). Bruyneel claimed that Van Hooydonck came to see him and Edwig claims the other way round.

    Quote
At the start of the Tour of Flanders I usually go to Café Den Engel because they have a good Stella. Then I saw Johan going round uncomfortably. Nobody was interested in him. I had the feeling that nobody wanted to have anything to do with him. Then all of a sudden he saw me standing, he came to see me and shook hands. We talked for five minutes and then Johan asked me if he could have a selfie with me. I agreed. My wife was there and could take the picture herself. There was nothing more and thereafter we both went our own way. Two days later I saw the picture with Johan and I in the Nieuwsblad with a story that didn't fit at all. Then came this story that he lost a lot of money and that his wife left him because of the affair with Armstrong. That is a bit pathetic.

Johan sent this picture to the newspaper [Nieuwsblad] and told them that we now get along very well as though nothing had happened but he lies.

OK It doesn't really belong in this thread but the story had to be shared.

Somewhat of a bizarre accident for Terptra, but the outcome sounds fairly serious, if not actually life threatening:

While I am at it, though no longer an official "man down" incident, it's another worrying hospitalisation.

Damn geese. We get those here all the time, and I can't believe how dumb or naive they are. I mean, they're still birds, and they can fly, but instead they choose to wander slowly across one the main, busy roads to get from one pond to another. Traffic will have to come to complete stop...except for when it doesn't. And then there's nothing left but a debris pile of feathers and various geese parts embedded into the road.
    :S

A very nice piece on Fabio Jakobsen, written by Ned Boulting yesterday evening, after his stint at the Milan-Torino:

I think I've read (but I don't remember where) that he's not in a coma, but in an artificial coma.
Those are much more controlled (since they're induced by medication) and easier to be brought back from, and are done to keep the body in a state where it can spend its energy on healing instead of moving, talking etc.
But of course, it is still a (sort of) coma, and you don't know for sure until you bring people back from it.

    Some medical updates:

    https://www.deceuninck-quickstep.com/en/news/4473/fabio-jakobsen-update
No brain or spinal cord injury, kept in induced coma because of gravity of injuries, had facial surgery during the night, doctors will try to wake him up from induced coma later today.

Good lord. That was one of the most horrific and violent crashes I've ever seen. I also wonder how that poor photographer even survived. He looked sandwiched right between the on-coming Jakobsen and a section of metal barrier.
     :(

Of course now everyone is complaining about how dangerous this downhill sprint finish has always been, and yet the teams line up for the race, again and again. The riders have all the power, if they could just figure out a way to harness and utilize it. Such a dumb sport.

Not great on patient confidentiality, that, and not exactly detailed either.
Waiting for news from the team.

    And here it is:
    https://www.deceuninck-quickstep.com/en/news/4478/fabio-jakobsen-brought-out-of-induced-coma

Jakobsen brought out of induced coma, could move arms and legs and communicate with doctors. No major neurological problems, but due to the facial injuries and the maxillofacial surgery, speaking and eating will be challenges, and the road to recovery is still a long one.
