Team Sponsorship 20/21

#dhb with plans to go PCT in 2021.

Kometa reiterated their desire to join those ranks as well in the past few days. Those two + Beat would balance out somewhat the loss of teams we had this year.

As an aside, Baugnies paints a shambolic picture of Wanty in that interview - not knowing what races were on their calendar until a week beforehand.

To be fair he could’ve got that info from PCS.

I get a picture of Wanty as a very old-school team. After all, the team manager is Hilaire Van der Schueren - the Belgian version of Gianni Savio.

The team management will have known which races they do well in advance.[1]
But in their mind there's no need to tell the riders such details, or allocate riders to races more than a week before; that would just be extra work for the mugwumps. The DS phones up whoever he wants to take when planning the travel, and either they stand at the ready, or they don't get another offer come contract time. :shh

In those old-school minds, riders have to be ready to be thrown into a Grand Tour at five minutes' notice. It didn't hurt Thevenet in the 1970s, why should it bother anyone today?
    :P
     1. or the team is more shambolic than even I can imagine; and this is cycling we're talking about

#sapura Team Sapura Cycling considers to step up as well

“It has been four years since we started (Team Sapura Cycling) and we are keen to move on to the next step,” said Sayuti.

“We are hoping to do so (ProTeam) if we can secure the support from Sapura. We will make a request and discuss it with them. Based on (the capability of) the current management and the riders we have, we are ready to do so.”

The mayor of Bogotá (anybody else remember Antanas Mockus? it's no longer him btw) and the governors of Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Meta, Huila and Tolima signed a historic agreement on Saturday in Sumapaz, the #PactoSumaPaz , to strengthen regional integration and local development. One of its axes is the 'Construction and promotion of regional identity through cycling' with the creation of the professional and international team Team Región Central , in addition to a female training. The presentation will be during the first half of 2020.

Saldarriaga will be in charge, if it goes ahead of course.

Letting GVA go would save a few bucks. Don't see too many other big earners in the 19 riders out of contract at the end of the year.

"Looking ahead to 2021, CCC will no longer be the title sponsor, so we are now actively looking for a new title sponsor," Ochowicz said on Monday, June 8.

Och now seems to have found a potential new main sponsor in Rally. The health company knows the cycling world from the inside out, since Rally has long been a sponsor of cycling team Rally Cycling. This formation rides a ProTeam license this season and has trained riders such as Sepp Kuss and Brandon McNulty in the past.

According to La Gazetta dello Sport, Rally and Ochowicz may reach an agreement soon. However, there are still some folds to be ironed out. For example, CCC Team has a contract with bicycle manufacturer Giant, while Rally has an ongoing commitment with Felt. The consequences of the possible deal for Rally's PCT team are currently unknown.

Greenedge has announced a new sponsorship with Manuela Fundacion a week ago = to have commenced from 1 July in time for this season .... but it is not all happiness and light in Spain ...

and they have now announced that it is all cancelled.  Seems the new 'sponsors' thought that they were actually buying the team and licence, and the team thought they were just signing on as a sponsor.

Now everyone is angry and upset

They're offering Ryan €10M for the licence.

There must be some interesting phone calls going on between Ryan and Bannan, cause looking at it from the outside it seems the latter has royally shafted the former, or am I reading that wrong?

yeah the way I was reading stuff over here it kinda looked like there were significant issues between Ryan and Bannon.

    From my understanding
Bannon - who is Gobal Cycling - arranged to sell this company, which has the licence for the womens team, and the management rights (but not hte licence) to the Mens Team.  Selling the company was to give Manuela Fundacion the rights to the Mens team (or so they thought).  Ryan didnt agree to this, so called it all off ... and now they are arguing over who has the rights to sell, what was in the Heads of Agreement to be sold and who got screwed over.

It appears though, that it is in fact Ryans call over whether or not to sell, and it was he who called it off so I am guessing that is a no to selling.
Though from what I can gather, Ryan owns the licence so Bannon cannot actually s

Kern Pharma have officially applied for Pro status in 2021. If Kometa go up as well, that will mean 5 (!) Spanish teams at that level. Surely too many.

Sanz is their only experienced rider, so another older head or two might be beneficial to take some pressure off the youngsters.

Gazzetta confirmed today that from next year Kometa will be a Pro Continental team. Their main sponsors will be Eolo (Italian internet provider) and Kometa. Eolo also sponsors some big Italian races like Tirreno, Gran Piemonte, Milano-Torino and Strade Bianche, so perhaps the team can expect some important invites. I am looking forward to seeing which riders they will bring to the team.

Bjarne Riis pulls a rabbit from his hat yet again! :o

Virtu Cycling acquires a 33% stake in the company running #ntt, Riis becomes team manager:
    https://nttprocycling.com/ntt-pro-cycling-enters-into-partnership-with-virtu-cycling

I've been doing some 'live commentary' on Twitter (this tweet is the start of a long-ish thread):
    https://twitter.com/lukascph/status/1214911535161716736

One important point is that they only announced a Letter of Intent today - which isn't a binding document. That said, both Doug Ryder on one side and Riis & Seier on the other would be the laughing stock of the cycling (and, more importantly, business) world if they didn't follow through, and quickly.

Is the rabbit he pulled out of his hat actually a dodo?

    https://twitter.com/WielerFlits/status/1301938038432555013

    Quote
The question is whether NTT Pro Cycling will be part of the WorldTour peloton next year. Sources confirm that the South African formation still does not have a sponsor for 2021 today.

The contract with NTT is coming to an end and at the moment the chance that the name sponsor will not renew is more than realistic.

Riis, along with his business partners Lars Seier Christensen and Jan Bech Andersen, would also take over part of the shares . But that has not happened yet and is being shelved. In fact, according to our sources, the survival of the team is under threat.

The Danish roof window manufacturer Velux was in the picture at the beginning of May to act as the new title sponsor, but that is no longer the case today.
