2020 Spring Classics CQ game
« on: February 14, 2020, 23:23 »
The riders have had a chance to do their warm-up races, and we are now 2 weeks from the northern European start to the season, which for many is where it really starts.

It is also where our Spring Classics CQ game starts.

Your team, should you accept the challenge, is to consist of 12 riders, whose CQ price at 1 January was in total no more than 3000 points in total.

You will gain points, and the attached bragging rights, according to the CQ scales and the performance of your chosen dozen in the following races:
29-Feb   Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite      1.UWT3
29-Feb   Faun-Ardèche Classic      1.Pro
01-Mar   Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne      1.Pro
01-Mar   Royal Bernard Drome Classic      1.Pro
07-Mar   Strade Bianche      1.UWT3
08-Mar   GP Industria & Artigianato      1.Pro
18-Mar   Danilith Nokere Koerse      1.Pro
19-Mar   Grand Prix de Denain - Porte du Hainaut      1.Pro
20-Mar   Bredene Koksijde Classic      1.Pro
21-Mar   Milano-Sanremo      1.UWT1
25-Mar   AG Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne      1.UWT3
27-Mar   E3 BinckBank Classic      1.UWT2
29-Mar   Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields      1.UWT2
01-Apr   Dwars door Vlaanderen - A travers la Flandre      1.UWT3
04-Apr   Gran Premio Miguel Indurain      1.Pro
05-Apr   Ronde van Vlaanderen - Tour des Flandres      1.UWT1
08-Apr   Scheldeprijs      1.Pro
12-Apr   Paris-Roubaix      1.UWT1
15-Apr   De Brabantse Pijl - La Flèche Brabançonne      1.Pro
19-Apr   Amstel Gold Race      1.UWT2
19-Apr   Tro-Bro Léon      1.Pro
22-Apr   La Flèche Wallonne      1.UWT2
26-Apr   Liège-Bastogne-Liège      1.UWT1
01-May   Eschborn-Frankfurt      1.UWT3
I should manage to get an update up within 24 hours or so of each event.

You will need to get your team to me before the first of these events start, so 11am CET on 29 Feb.  A PM on this forum should do the job.  I will send my team to the first manager to send in their names (but not before Monday evening, as I am away for the weekend).

As ever, your efforts to submit your rider list in CQ format, with nothing else on the same line, are appreciated.

Ok so this weekend's fun is writing a research paper and CQ game .

Generally I peak here and it all goes pear shaped after

Not me. It does look interesting especially the stock market style half of the game. Buy low, sell high and all that, but unfortunately it's that part of the game that would require a lot of attention to try and keep on top of things and I just don't have to time to do that for 8-9 months on a daily basis.

Feel free to start one yourself. There may be others who are playing it. :cool

No I don't play the PCS game either, Josedin may still play, I know he did last year.

I have started playing the first cycling game this year which gives a bit more interest for the smaller races.

With just over a week to go, we have seven teams in (plus my own, which has been lodged with Hakkie).

There is a Dropbox file that will help you check the prices and name formats of your riders, and includes a column with the points earned by riders in this series of races last year.

Vanmarcke has scored between 600 and 604 points in four of the past five years. So we know roughly how many he’ll get.

I am but I don't have the time to check in every day for the transfers and I wasn't playing right from the beginning which gives you a big disadvantage. So I mostly buy and sell on weekends. I play with the same name as here as it's fitting.

19 teams in so far, with Thursday, Friday and part of Saturday (depending on your time zone) left to get your team to me.

95 riders have been selected: 2 of them are on more than half the teams, 53 are only picked once (including one who retired at the end of last season: oops)

Only two pairs of teams have the same two riders as their most expensive picks.

At present, the popularity rankings range from 81% to 42% of the provisional Collective Wisdom team's score and the points that the selected riders scored in this series of races last year go from 26% to 83% of the highest possible score that I have found.

But still plenty more teams to come to disrupt this data, I hope.

    Rider Popularity

With the first 18 teams in, Van der Poel was the joint second most popular pick, but since then he has been withdrawn from several teams, and only named in one (Hello MV) since his flu was made public.

The names in bold comprise the Collective Wisdom team (Durbridge being the most expensive of those who are joint 12th who would not put the team over budget: I tried averaging out the 5 of them, but that was still way over budget)

20 (out of 23 teams) SIMMONS Quinn
    17: DILLIER Silvan
15: ANDERSEN Søren Kragh, VAN AERT Wout
    13: DE BIE Sean
    12: DRUCKER Jempy, MODOLO Sacha
    10: ROELANDTS Jürgen
8: BOUHANNI Nacer, BRUNEL Alexys, STYBAR Zdenek
7: CORT NIELSEN Magnus, Durbridge Luke, EEKHOFF Nils, VAN DER POEL Mathieu, VANMARCKE Sep
6: MOSCON Gianni, VAN LERBERGHE Bert
5: BOECKMANS Kris, JUNGELS Bob, KWIATKOWSKI Michal, ROWE Luke, VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael, VICHOT Arthur
4: BETTIOL Alberto, DEBUSSCHERE Jens, HAUSSLER Heinrich, HERMANS Quinten, PETIT Adrien, SENECHAL Florian, VAN DER HOORN Taco, Van Poppel Danny
3: BAGIOLI Andrea, DEGENKOLB John, EDMONDSON Alexander, ENGER Sondre Holst, GASPAROTTO Enrico, GAUDIN Damien, HOELGAARD Daniel, HUYS Laurens, JACOBS Johan, MERLIER Tim, MOLANO BENAVIDES Juan Sebastian, TEUNS Dylan, VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume, VANENDERT Jelle, VANHOUCKE Harm
2: BACKAERT Frederik, BAUHAUS Phil, BEULLENS Cédric, CRAS Steff, CULLAIGH Gabriel, Devenyns Dries, DEVRIENDT Tom, EENKHOORN Pascal, FELLINE Fabio, GARCIA CORTINA Ivan, GESCHKE Simon, KANTER Max, RICKAERT Jonas, RUTSCH Jonas, SIX Franklin, TERPSTRA Niki, THEUNS Edward, THWAITES Scott, VAKOC Petr, ZABEL Rick
and there should be 64 asterisked riders in the previous post as unique picks.

    Main buys

Having to spread a budget of 3000 points across 12 riders gives an easily calculated average spend of 250 per man.  Any rider costing more than twice that could be considered a main buy, that will be key in how successful a team will be.

We have between us selected 18 such riders: some of us just have one of them, some manage to squeeze in three, but only two teams have gone for the same combination.

    Sagan: Amis Velo

Van der Poel with Van Aert and Vanmarcke: SemirS
       with Stybar:   Leadbelly
       with Teuns:   Just Some Guy
with Jungels:   Blues in the Bottle
       with Vanmarcke:   TRiley36
       with Hirschi:   Joelsim
       only:   Mellow Velo

Naesen with Van Aert and Degenkolb:   Salvarani

Van Aert   with Stybar and Valgren:   Rote Laterne
with Stybar and Merlier:   Zaka Fan
       with Stybar:   Otoxiep87
       with Bettiol and Merlier:   Josedin
       with Bettiol:   Comodoro
       with Jungels and Degenkolb:   Shalgo
       with Jungels:   Bminchow
       with Kwiatkowski:   Armchair Cyclist
       with Vanmarcke and Valgren:   Tobydawq
       with Vanmarcke and Terpstra:   Madrazo
       with Vanmarcke:   Scrool07
       with Degenkolb:   DJSprtsch
       only:   Search

Stybar   with Teuns:   Laarsland,   Los Brolin
       with Bettiol and Keukeleire:   BlackBandit222
       with Vanmarcke:   Googolplex

    Bettiol   with Jungels:   Northerner

    Jungels   with Valgren:   Vladimir

    Martin   with Vanmarcke:   Kazistuta

Kwiatkowski   with Valgren and Terpstra:   Hakkie
       with Valgren:   Del1962
       with Merlier:   NAS
       only:   Glomser

The Collective Wisdom team has Van Aert and Stybar (like Otoxiep87), and the SoLastYear team (explained in the next post) has Leadbelly's Van der Poel and Stybar combination.

    Last Year's scores

We obviously all hope that our selected riders will perform well in this series of 24 races (if they all survive Covid19 precautions): last year the top scorers across these events were
    VAN DER POEL Mathieu   901
    ALAPHILIPPE Julian   892
    FUGLSANG Jakob   632
    STYBAR Zdenek   573
    NAESEN Oliver   546
    KRISTOFF Alexander   542
    BETTIOL Alberto   444
    VAN AVERMAET Greg   443
    ACKERMANN Pascal   428
    VAN AERT Wout   418
    POLITT Nils   400

If we had put our 2020 riders into the 2019 game (and our race selection last year had been the same as this) we would have the following scores:

    1   Leadbelly   1721
    2   Blues_in_the_Bottle   1583
    3   Shalgo   1552
    4   BlackBandit222   1531
    5   SemirS   1530
    6   Triley36   1448
    7   Otoxiep87   1411
    8   Googolplex   1407
    9   Northerner   1405
    10   RoteLaterne   1386
    11   JustSomeGuy   1351
    12   MellowVelo   1346
    13   Salvarani   1337
    14   Scrool07   1216
    15   DJSprtsch   1172
    16   Zaka_Fan   1129
    17   Laarsland   1113
    18   Comodoro   1111
    19   Joelsim   1066
    20   Josedin   1062
    21   Armchair   1046
    22   Bminchow   1038
    23   LosBrolin   1006
    24   Glomser   992
    25   Hakkie2   904
    26   Madrazo   892
    27   Vladimir   872
    28   AmisVelo   797
    29   Search   788
    30   Tobydawq   786
    31   NorthAmericanScum   646
    32   Del1962   548
    33   Kazistuta   488
       SoLastYear   2126
       CollectiveWisdom   1322

That SoLastYear team is the combination that, from what I can find, scored highest last year while being eligible this year.  Omitting retired riders, I couldn't find a combination of 12 that beats this set of 11 that exhausts the 3000 point budget:
    VAN DER POEL Mathieu
    STYBAR Zdenek
    VAN GENECHTEN Jonas
    HAUSSLER Heinrich
    DRUCKER Jempy
    SCHWARZMANN Michael
    VINJEBO Emil Nygaard
    BOECKMANS Kris
    WEEMAES Sasha
    VICHOT Arthur
    LECROQ Jérémy

AC, as I didn't submit until yesterday, I did contemplate changing my original selection for a WvA/Stybar or Jungels combo, but decided it was a bit unfair on all those who had already submitted teams.
Seems I shouldn't have been so considerate. :lol

Anyhow, it already looks as if WvA isn't going to score much today. :P :D

Simmons is named on 20 teams, so gives you 20 points in this listing, while a unique pick would score you 1.

    1   Armchair   114
    2   RoteLaterne   112
    3   Josedin   111
    4   AmisVelo   105

    11   Tobydawq   97
    12   Vladimir   91
    13   Leadbelly   88
    14   Salvarani   86
    14   Triley36   86
    16   Del1962   82
    17   Laarsland   81
    18   DJSprtsch   80
    18   MellowVelo   80
    18   Northerner   80
    18   Otoxiep87   80
    22   Scrool07   77
    23   Joelsim   75
    24   Search   72
    25   Glomser   71

    33   Blues_in_the_Bottle   40
       SoLastYear   43
       CollectiveWisdom   145

In the interests of full disclosure, the team I lodged with Hakkie when the teams began to come in would have been mid to high in this table, but not top.  However, I stated to Hakkie when telling him my team that I would reserve the right to change it in case of injury/change of programme.  So I changed, as did others, away from MvdP, and was not going to have a 1300 point+ replacement for him, so I ended up replacing MvdP, Eekhoff and Van Hecke (yep: I chose a retired rider, which I only noticed when compiling the SoLastYear team) with Van Aert, Bouhanni and Kragh Andersen.  So my replacements were more popular, but I will just have to ask you to trust that the three late recruits were very much in my consideration.  If some of you choose to consider that my team has an asterisk by it, I can't do anything about it, but my conscience is clear.

And with 7km of Omloop left, my swaps look like being fortuitous.

I was wondering how anyone could pick a retired player until selecting a team last night.
It was a minefield of retirees I kept thinking that was the rider someone selected no that was (Devolder, Phinney, Boom, etc).  At one point I had 3 retirees names down myself (Pichot, Dehaes, Curvers).

Immediately regretting not taking Drucker, Haussler & Roelandts.

The top ten in each race will get points towards the minor competition, the green points.  Last year this was dominated by the same team as won the main classification by a huge margin, but I'll include it again as it might maintain competitive interest for some managers for a bit longer.  Those points are the distribution that CQ uses for TdF stages, and can be seen above apart from pointing out that 6th 7th and 8th get 10, 5 and 3 points, and that when there is a tie the points are averaged out, as illustrated with those sharing 6th place in this race.

Race 2/14 Faun-Ardèche Classic (actually finished before Omloop, but it is positioned second in the spreadsheet)

BAGIOLI Andrea   10th, 24pts for Laarsland, Salvarani and Shalgo
KREUZIGER Roman   14th, 14 for Hakkie
    PARET-PEINTRE Aurélien   16th, 10 for Bminchow
BENNETT Sean   26th, 5 for Just Some Guy

    Green Points
For the Green Points, on a race like this it makes more sense to deduct .41 from the scores of the 6 teams who got anything than to give the other 27 teams 0.41 each.

    So this race yields:
Laarsland, Salvarani and Shalgo  54.91 each
    Hakkie 24.59
    Bminchow  14.59
    JSG  9.59

    Standings:
    1   Vladimir   80
    2   Laarsland   54.59
    2   Salvarani   54.59
    2   Shalgo   54.59
    5   Search   50
    6   Bminchow   39.59
    7   Madrazo   35
    8   Hakkie2   24.59
    9   Josedin   15
    10   JustSomeGuy   9.59
    11   Armchair   6
    11   LosBrolin   6
    11   Zaka_Fan   6
    14   Tobydawq   2
    15   Leadbelly   1

    Standings

Not much change, as Omloop brought 32 times as many points to the game as Ardeche, but Salvarani rises 5 places, Shalgo 3, and Laarsland and Hakkie one spot each.

    1   Vladimir   187
    2   Search   175

    23   Otoxiep87   79
    24   Hakkie2   63
    25   JustSomeGuy   58
    26   Scrool07   38

    33   Blues_in_the_Bottle   15
       SoLastYear   46
       CollectiveWisdom   188

2 races again tomorrow, but it will probably still be some time before the teams that will eventually dominate rise to the top.

    Race 3 Drome Classic

A very impressive top three for a race that was 1.1 last year; a less impressive impact on the game

Sean Bennett   8th  34 points for Just Some Guy (77.97 Green points, rather than give 30 teams 2.03 each)
    Anthony Perez  15th  12 for Googolplex  (47.97)
    Roman Kreuziger  24th, 5 for Hakkie  (32.97)

JSG moves up 2 places to 23rd in the main ranking, and Googolplex one place to joint 16th.  Hakkie actually dropped despite being one of three scorers, being one of those overtaken by JSG.

Top ten of the green points:
    1   JustSomeGuy   87.56
    2   Vladimir   80
    3   Hakkie2   57.56
    4   Laarsland   54.59
    4   Salvarani   54.59
    4   Shalgo   54.59
    7   Search   50
    8   Googolplex   47.97
    9   Bminchow   39.59
    10   Madrazo   35

CQ still only has partial results of KBK up, so it'll be a little longer before I have that posted, but only three of the top ten were chosen, and of those, only the tenth placed picked more than once.

    DRUCKER Jempy   16th, 10 for 12
    DEGENKOLB John   18th, 8   3
    and 5 five pointers

    1   Otoxiep87   62 (Van Gestel, Roelandts and 2 fives) (80 Green Points)
    2   Googolplex   56 (Hofstetter and Drucker) (50)
    3=   MellowVelo, Northerner   39 (Roelandts, Drucker and a 5) (30 each)
    5   Glomser   34 (Roelandts and Drucker) (15)
    6=   JustSomeGuy, Vladimir, Hakkie2, AmisVelo   29 (5 each)
    10=   Kazistuta, Joelsim   24  (0.5)
    12   Shalgo   23
    13   Del1962   19
    14   Salvarani   18
    15   RoteLaterne   15
    16=   Search, Bminchow, Madrazo, Josedin, LosBrolin, Zaka_Fan, Leadbelly, Triley36, BlackBandit222, NorthAmericanScum   10

       SoLastYear   10
       CollectiveWisdom   39

    Green Points standings

Second highest scorer on both races today makes a good day for Googolplex.

    1   Googolplex   97.97
    2   JustSomeGuy   92.56
    3   Vladimir   85
    4   Otoxiep87   80
    5   Hakkie2   62.56
    6   Shalgo   54.59
    6   Salvarani   54.59
    6   Laarsland   54.59
    9   Search   50
    10   Bminchow   39.59

    Standings
About 80% of the points so far come from the Omloop, so that race still has by far the biggest effect.

A 12 place jump for Googolplex brings him into the top ten, and Glomser and Amis Velo both have 5 place jumps to get into that group.  Farther down the table, Joelsim also has a 5 pace jump, and Otoxiep is up 7 places.

    1   Vladimir   216
    2   Search   185
    3   Madrazo   179
    4   Googolplex   178
    5   Bminchow   174

    17   MellowVelo   141
    19   Tobydawq   140
    20   DJSprtsch   130
    21   Shalgo   125
    22   JustSomeGuy   121
    23   RoteLaterne   112
    24   Laarsland   100
    25   Hakkie2   97
    26   Joelsim   47
    27   Triley36   45
    28   Scrool07   38
    28   SemirS   38
    30   BlackBandit222   36
    31   Comodoro   30

    33   Blues_in_the_Bottle   15
       SoLastYear   56
       CollectiveWisdom   227

I hope we will have 2 more races next weekend, but they are in Italy so they are still rather uncertain.

I think I've given up on Dropbox: I'm going to try hosting the spreadsheets on Google drive here.

Congratulations to everybody: you are all joint winners on races 5, 6 and 10, and especially to Vladimir and Googolplex, who extend their leads for at least another week and a half.  Hopefully there will be something to reconvene for on 18th in Nokere.

That, it would appear, is that.

All remaining races are cancelled or postponed, and even if rescheduled, will not take place in anything describable as the European spring.  So congratulations to Vladimir, our winner, to podium placed Search and Madrazo, and to Googolplex who topped the Green points.

In terms of the top three, we could have stopped after the first race, as Omloop provided 81.5% of the game's points (KBK 14.7%, Ardeche 2.5% and Drome 1.3%).

The top scoring riders were(Rider/score/price/number of teams)
    STUYVEN Jasper   232   854   0
    BARGUIL Warren   136   711   0
    ASGREEN Kasper   135   757   0
    CAVAGNA Rémi   135   300   0
    CLARKE Simon   130   638   0
    MARTIN Guillaume   124   1041   0
    LAMPAERT Yves   108   979   0
    KANGERT Tanel   106   333   0
    ANDERSEN Søren Kragh   92   268   15
    TRENTIN Matteo   78   1478   0
    NIZZOLO Giacomo   78   490   0
    NIBALI Vincenzo   75   1012   0
    DECLERCQ Tim   70   89   1 (Googolplex)
    EDET Nicolas   66   282   0
    KRISTOFF Alexander   66   1606   0
    TEUNISSEN Mike   62   1252   0
    NAESEN Oliver   59   1205   1 (Salvarani)
    JAKOBSEN Fabio   58   781   0
    ROTA Lorenzo   54   138   0
    COSNEFROY Benoit   52   683   0
    SERRANO RODRIGUEZ Gonzalo   51   130   0
    HOFSTETTER Hugo   46   505   1 (Googolplex)
    GILBERT Philippe   46   911   0
    COLBRELLI Sonny   45   909   0
    CALMEJANE Lilian   44   596   0
    ROELANDTS Jürgen   42   100   10
    KÜNG Stefan   40   889   0
    HONORE Mikkel Frølich   40   100   0
    SIMON Julien   40   463   0

and a special mention of MARTIN SANZ Gotzon, the only rider who yielded a profit in the abridged series.

I think the best possible team is STUYVEN Jasper
    CLARKE Simon
    CAVAGNA Rémi
    EDET Nicolas
    ANDERSEN Søren Kragh
    ROTA Lorenzo
    SERRANO RODRIGUEZ Gonzalo
    DRUCKER Jempy
    ROELANDTS Jürgen
    DECLERCQ Tim
    BENNETT Sean
    PICHON Laurent
for a total of 968 points.

This includes three of the Collective Wisdom team, which far outscored Vladimir or any other team.

    The impeccable picks were:
    STUYVEN Jasper
    BARGUIL Warren
    CAVAGNA Rémi
    ANDERSEN Søren Kragh
    DECLERCQ Tim
    BENNETT Sean
    PICHON Laurent
    MARTIN SANZ Gotzon

Let's hope, with no disrespect to him intended, that this does not award Vladimir the 4 seasons title, but quite when we will reconvene and what game will be next is anyone's guess.  If we have a large scale upgrading of the autumn one day programme to include some of these races, I would hope to have a, presumably one off, autumn game.  We'll see.

    Until whenever...
