Stage 16: La Tour-du-Pin>Villard-de-Lans

September 15th

After the rest day, the Tour heads towards the Alpes, in what's likely to be a stage for the breakaway specialists again, especially as the more difficult climbs come relatively early on. But if some GC contender struggles to get into the rhythm... who knows, how it may unfold.

The Montée de Saint Nizier du Moucherotte is a long, but fairly regular climb, topping with 21k to go:

Before a short bump to the finish, following a 19k flat run-in:

So far, surprisingly few riders have cast an eye on the #kom mountain classification, meaning that it's still #ag2r Benoit Cosnefroy in the lead, although he has only scored one single point since day 8 of the race:

1      #kom     BENOIT COSNEFROY       36 PTS
2      #uae     TADEJ POGACAR       34 PTS
3      #jumbo     PRIMOŽ ROGLIC       33 PTS
4      #ag2r     NANS PETERS       31 PTS
5      #sunweb     MARC HIRSCHI       31 PTS
6      #bbhotels     PIERRE ROLLAND       26 PTS
7      #cofidis     JESUS HERRADA       25 PTS
8      #trek     TOMS SKUJINS       24 PTS
9      #ntt     MICHAEL GOGL       24 PTS
10      #bbhotels     QUENTIN PACHER       21 PTS

With 23pt available tomorrow, it could be a wise move from #ag2r to try to send Nans Peter up the road to defend the jersey for the team instead - although, with 40pt on offer at the finish the day after, it may only be for one more day.

I do hope that we finally get a worthy rider in the polka dots. It could add nicely to some of the other underlying narratives unfolding.

Cosnefroy, bless his heart, has not exactly animated the #kom.

last time this finishing climb was used (everything else of the stage was different) it actually turned out to be fairly selective. Nibali attacked from a 3-men chase group with 1.5k to go, went past Gallopin, but Rui Costa came back in the end to catch (and drop) him

    (climb starts at ~41 minutes)

it was a tough, rainy day back then, with small groups everywhere in the end. No idea what it looks like with a big peloton let by the #jumbo train hitting the climb, but maybe there's a chance for more late action than I initially thought.

it's really quite a strange (non-)competiion so far this year. On paper, it was a good course for escapees to win the jersey, but by not really showing interest so far, they brought the gc guys back in play. Picking up 40pt at the finish tomorrow (and some in the time trial) could be enough for Pogacar or Roglic to win the jersey
