Alaphilippe attacked on the final climb. Everyone expected it, and still nobody had any reply.

It was a nice race. Disappointed as a Belgian but have to admit that the best rider won and it's well deserved. What is weird is that moments prior his decisive attack we could see Alaphilippe biting his teeth, fighting and Van Aert breathing through the nose but still Julian won and Wout came 2nd. Julian is the more explosive rider of the two anyway. We could see that in Milan-Sanremo, only then Wout was able to capitalise on the descent to come back. On a harder route it's harder for him. He's too heavy.

Anyway, isn't it unusual to have 20+ km laps at the Worlds? I've always thought 20km was a limit.

    Indeed.
There is no limit as such, but laps of 14-21 km are definitely the 'standard' in recent years. And going back further, the 'standard' was even shorter - 12-18 km.

I've looked at the last 40 editions (including the cancelled one in Aigle/Martigny), see the list in the spoiler below.
The average distance of a lap was ~16.3 km (allowing for rounding differences), and only five of those were longer than 20 km (Benidorm 1992 at 21.8 km, Madrid 2005 at 21.2 km, Salzburg 2006 at 21.7 km, Innsbruck 2018 at 23.9 km, and Imola 2020 at 28.9 km). This means that Imola is a huge outlier length-wise.

Can't wait for next year tbh. The circuit is made up of all my local roads. I think I must have ridden every bit of it at one time or another, some of it very often, and let me tell you there are some wonderful little climbs there including one that I haven't done for years just because the road surface was so poor. Perhaps they have redone it since then, I must go check.
