2020 Giro d'Italia CQ Game
« on: September 25, 2020, 00:29 »
It's less than a week since the Tour de France ended, we're in the middle of the World Championships, but halfway through the Spring Classics game, and I'm launching the Giro game.  2020, huh?

If you don't know these games

cqranking.com is a site you should check out.  It took on the allocation of points from all .1 and higher races when the UCI stopped doing so after the initiation of the ProTour in 2005, and has continued it since, thus making an invaluable summary of results and career progressions since the turn of the millennium.

Although they publish a score for during the calendar year, the score that is more relevant to us here is the running score over the last 12 months.  Those scores are available on that site, and can vary day to day, but are also on a spreadsheet made available for download once a week.  It is those prices for the year to Sunday 27th September, as they will appear on the download on Monday 28th, that are the cost of each rider in the game.

Your task as a manager is to pick 8 riders who are taking part in the Giro, and whose total cost is no more than 3500 points.  Your score is the CQ points they gain in the Giro (points for the top ten, 70 to the winner, in each stage; the same scale of points for the final points and mountains classifications; 18 points for the pink jersey wearer going into each stage; and final GC position with scores from 500 for the winner down to 15 for all finishers)  The prices, start list, and full score charts are on a spreadsheet here. That spreadsheet also gives you the version of riders' names which I would ask you to use.

Your list of riders should be with me (send a personal message on Cycling News or VeloRooms) before the stage 1 starts at 13:15 Italian time on 3rd October.  If your team is over budget or you select a rider who does not start, I will try to alert you to the need to change, but if you don't, I'll swap him for the next cheapest in the same team, or next cheapest altogether if necessary.  There will be updates after each stage.

If you only need the summary
8 riders, 3500 points, by 13:15 on 3rd Oct, selection tool.

Please don't try to submit your team before the prices are set after Sunday's results, but by all means start thinking.

And, as ever, good luck to all.

Tell me about it: I'll have Spring Classics game updates during the Giro and the Vuelta, overlaps between those two GTs, and ought to try to do monthly updates on three Emerging Riders games at the beginning of each month.

That's the poorest Giro startlist since the early noughties when the big teams regularly sent their leftovers, if they bothered to turn up at all. :(

The price list has now ben updated, and applied to the selection tool, so the game is open.

The selection spreadsheet is based on CyclingFans.com's version of the startlist, as that looks more reliable than PCS right now.

    I declare the game open!

Less than 24 hours to go.  We have 18 teams so far, who have selected 42 riders between them, 25 as unique picks and no less than 6 on at least half the teams.

Don't forget to get your team in before Alex Dowsett rolls down the ramp.

    The riders
There are 176 riders in the race (well, 174 now): 60 have been picked for the game.

It still hasn't quite been done, but for a long time I thought we might get not just one, but two riders on every single team.  Then I had one without Kruijswijk, but it wasn't until Googolplex's very last minute entry (if one excludes Redhead Dane's entirely randomly generated squad) that we had a team without Geraint Thomas.
I can't remember anyone combining popularity with a high price in the way that Yates has done in any of these games.

    In order of popularity:

    32: THOMAS Geraint
    30: KRUIJSWIJK Steven
    28: YATES Simon
    21: MATTHEWS Michael
    18: NIBALI Vincenzo
    16: OOMEN Sam
    11: ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves
    10:KONRAD Patrick
    8: KELDERMAN Wilco
    6: VLASOV Aleksandr
    5: SAGAN Peter
4: CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander, FUGLSANG Jakob, GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose, KNOX James, MCNULTY Brandon
3: DE GENDT Thomas, DOWSETT Alex, GANNA Filippo, GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida, HÄNNINEN Jaakko
2: CARBONI Giovanni, DENNIS Rohan, DIBBEN Jonathan, DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd, HAIG Jack, HOLMES Matthew, MASNADA Fausto, MEINTJES Louis, O'CONNOR Ben, VALTER Attila
and the unique picks (28 of them) are indicated  in the preceding post.

    Collective Wisdom
With no less than 6 riders being on at least half the teams, popularity rankings are high, and many teams are very close to the maximum possible.  The best possible is those top 6 in the selection stats, plus Konrad and Cepeda.  But that would leave the Collective Wisdom team quite a lot under budget, and it proves possible to average out three of those 4 team riders and still come in on budget.  So the points at the bottom of the table are procured by:
    THOMAS Geraint
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven
    YATES Simon
    MATTHEWS Michael
    NIBALI Vincenzo
    OOMEN Sam
    KONRAD Patrick
1/3 of CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander

    Stage 1 Palermo ITT

Purple points because I refuse to acknowledge that colour as cyclamen.

These are the points for the top ten in each stage (70, 40, 25 down to 1 for 10th).  These points, like the 18 points gained by the pink jersey wearer after each stage except the last, cannot be lost even if the rider fails to reach Milan.

1   BicycleBoy   110 (Ganna, Bjerg and Thomas)
    2=   Del1962, Yellow_Knight   85 (Ganna and Thomas)
4=   ArchieBoy, BikeRacer33, Bminchow, ChrisDK, DJSprtsch, Fivezzz, Leadbelly, LosBrolin, Mellow_Velo, Nakazar, Nathanptz   55 (Almeida and Thomas)
    15   Comodoro   18
    16=   Thomas teams   15
    33=   Googolplex, RedheadDane   0
       Collective_Wisdom   15

    Main Game

Your points here include those stage points, but also points according to each rider's position in the GC (500 for the leader, 15 for anyone outside the top 50), KoM and Sprint classification points (same points as each stage), and the above mentioned pink jersey points.

Today, of course, points are very much in line with the stage result.

    1   BicycleBoy   1456
    2   Yellow_Knight   1234
    3   Del1962   1126
    4   Nathanptz   1045
    5   Bminchow   1031
    6   DJSprtsch   984
    7   Fivezzz   964
    7   Leadbelly   964
    9   Mellow_Velo   956
    10   ArchieBoy   946
    10   BikeRacer33   946
    10   Nakazar   946
    13   LosBrolin   903
    14   ChrisDK   883
    15   Comodoro   619
    16   Triley36   566
    17   Kazistuta   557
    18   JustSomeGuy   553
    19   Salvarani   548
    20   Northerner   524
    21   BluesInTheBottle   518
    22   AmisVelo   516
    22   Rote_Laterne   516
    24   Koronin   507
    25   Laarsland   506
    25   Otoxiep87   506
    25   Search   506
    28   Armchair_Cyclist   473
    28   Shalgo   473
    30   Jakob747   464
    31   SafeBet   453
    32   Scrool07   411
    33   Googolplex   236
    34   RedheadDane   231
       Collective_Wisdom   530

But these positions are no more a reflection on who might win than the current GC is a suggestion that Ganna will win the Giro.

OK, I don't think that has happened before.

We have had teams that were very similar, and the riders who comprised the difference between the team were outside the top 50 and had no stage top tens.  I remember one game in which such a pair of teams was in a high position, but changes in GC meant they fell away to a sufficiently obscure position that it mattered to no-one that there was a tie.

But I don't think we have had two identical teams before.  But Fivezzz and Leadbelly have managed just that.  They both spent 3425 points, so I will invite each of them to select one rider of cost up to 75 points, not to add to their score but to distinguish between them, if and only if they are in the top 5.

If other teams in the top five are equal, I suggest that the first tiebreaker is the score of their 2nd rider, then the third, and so on (including, if necessary, their position in GC outside the top 50, although both riders would be on 15 points in the game):: thus there is favour given to the more balanced team.

For example, ArchieBoy and BikeRacer33 are currently tied for 7th.  Their 2nd, 3rd and 4th highest scorers are all the same 3 riders, and in each case the lower 4 riders are all on 15 points.  But Archie's 5th man is Vlasov, 54th in GC, while BikeRacer's is Konrad in 62nd, so if I needed to differentiate between them, Archie would get the higher placing.  I hope it doesn't come into play much.

But when I was considering how sprinters might place in the final Tour stage in Paris, there were a number of plausible scenarios that could have made for a tie, so it is good to have some scalpel to slip between managers if necessary.

So the resolution of the identical teams of Fivezzz and Leadbelly will be decided by
    HÄNNINEN Jaakko (for Leadbelly) and
RUBIO REYES Einer Augusto (for Fivezzz)

In the first instance by the CQ points that they score, or by their GC position if they both finish with the same CQ points, or by the number of stages completed if they both DNF, or by their GC position on the morning of the stage that they both fail to finish if it comes to it.

With the number of very popular picks (6 in more than half the teams), and the small number of promising looking outside bets, then I suppose it is not that surprising that it has arisen this time around.

    Stage 2  Uphill sprint

    Purple points

Ulissi was probably too expensive at 1067 to be a sensible pick, but plenty of other top ten riders today

1   Nathanptz   62 (Sagan, Matthews, Almeida)
    2   Del1962   58 (Sagan, Matthews, Nibali)
    3   DJSprtsch   47 (Sagan, Almeida)
4   Googolplex, Salvarani   43 (Sagan, Nibali)
    6   RedheadDane   28 (Honore, Nibali)
7   Nakazar   25 (Matthews, Almeida, Nibali)
8   ArchieBoy, BikeRacer33, Bminchow, ChrisDK, Fivezzz, Leadbelly, Mellow_Velo   22 (Matthews, Almeida)
15   AmisVelo, Kazistuta, Laarsland, Northerner, Rote_Laterne, SafeBet, Search, Triley36   18 (Matthews, Nibali)
    23   JustSomeGuy, Koronin, Otoxiep87, LosBrolin   7 (Almeida)
    27   Armchair_Cyclist, BicycleBoy, Comodoro, Scrool07, Shalgo   3 (Nibali)
    32   BluesInTheBottle, Jakob747, Yellow_Knight   0
       Collective_Wisdom   18

    Standings
    1   Del1962   143
    2   Nathanptz   117
    3   BicycleBoy   113
    4   DJSprtsch   102
    5   Yellow_Knight   85
    6   Nakazar   80
    7=   ArchieBoy, BikeRacer33, Bminchow, ChrisDK, Fivezzz, Leadbelly, Mellow_Velo   77

    Main game

Because points are issued according to a rider's position in GC and the KoM and sprints classifications as though each stage were the last one (and this being 2020, it might be), and their position in those rankings can fall, so can their points.

So the bigger scoring (or losing) riders that are relevant to the game are:
    SAGAN Peter   122   5 teams
HONORE Mikkel Frølich   113   for Redhead Dane
    YATES Simon   87   28 teams
    MATTHEWS Michael   80   21
    KANGERT Tanel   76   1
    MCNULTY Brandon   56   4
    OOMEN Sam   41   16
    HINDLEY Jai   40   1
    KNOX James   39   4
    O'CONNOR Ben   38   2
    KONRAD Patrick   37   10
    THOMAS Geraint   36   32
    ZAKARIN Ilnur   33   1
    MASNADA Fausto   31   2
    NIBALI Vincenzo   30   18
    ---
    GANNA Filippo   -37   3
    ZABEL Rick   -45   1
    DENNIS Rohan   -75   2
    CRADDOCK Lawson   -153   1
    BJERG Mikkel   -320   1

And so the team changes on the day are:
1   Nathanptz   437  (Sagan, Yates, Matthews, Kangert, Konrad, Thomas)
2   Salvarani   350 (Sagan, Yates, Oomen, Konrad, Thomas, Nibali)
3   Kazistuta   340 (Yates, Matthews, McNulty, Oomen, Thomas, Nibali)
    4   DJSprtsch   333
    5   Triley36   328
    6   Rote_Laterne   321
    7   Northerner   320
    8   Fivezzz   311
    8   Leadbelly   311
    10   JustSomeGuy   294
    11   Laarsland   292

    * distinguished according to Rubio being ahead of Hanninen on GC, because I said I would bring in the tiebreaker if they are in the top 5.

118 points lead looks like a lot, but things can change pretty rapidly, especially on a stage like tomorrow's.

The collapse of Thomas and Yates (and therefore the last we'll hear of this Giro on BBC Sports news) is almost neutralised by their near ubiquity.

    Stage 4  Sicilian sprint

    Green points
Sprint stages are far less significant in the game than most mountainous stages, especially if the winner is too expensive to be picked.  But not the second place.

    1=   Del1962, Nathanptz   43 (Sagan and Matthews)
3=   DJSprtsch, Googolplex, Salvarani   40 (Sagan)

Stage 5  Everyone said it was made for the breakaway, but only one of the breakaway made it.

    Green points

The Ganna teams probably thought they would have to wait until stage 14

1   LosBrolin   80 (Konrad, Almeida and Kelderman)
    2=   BicycleBoy, Del1962, Yellow_Knight   70 (Ganna)
    5   BikeRacer33   66 (Konrad, Almeida, Masnada)
    6   ArchieBoy, Mellow_Velo, Nathanptz   65 (Konrad, Almeida)

    10=   Konrad teams   40

I presume those of us that had Almeida and Kelderman are included in here as well?

Sorry: sometimes I count to see if the number of teams that have a rider tallies with the number of teams on a score, and sometimes I don't think to, and other permutations that yield the same score get lumped together.

    Stage 6

Purple points  I may have referred to them as green recently.

    1   Triley36   65 (Matthews and Felline)
    2=   Del1962, Nathanptz   43 (Matthews and Sagan)

A vaguely worthwhile day if your team has Matthews, but not a lot otherwise.

    Standings

This morning's top two do not have Matthews: they are no longer the top two.  But the top two are Team FiveBelliezzz, so the race between their ninth men (Haaninen vs Rubio) is the race for the title.

Tomorrow's stage might be equally underwhelming, but we will get to see what other sprinters might have been worth picking.

Google Drive has all the numbers.

    Stage 8 The unpursued breakaway

We all try to guess who might be part of a successful breakaway when we are looking for our cheaper picks:  sometime we just stumble across breakaway success in trying to find a cheap pick for time trial stages.

    Purple points

    1=   AmisVelo, Otoxiep87   75 (Dowsett and Matthews)
    3   Shalgo   70 (Dowsett)
4=   Nakazar, Northerner`30 (Holmes and Matthews)

Stage 9 Not sure why I bothered recording this one to watch later.

    Purple points

Sometimes picks for a breakaway come off.

1   Googolplex   72 (Guerrero and Fuglsang)
    2=   Comodoro, Laarsland   70 (Guerrero)
    4   BicycleBoy   25 (Bjerg)
    5   AmisVelo   7 (Geoghegan Hart)
6=   Armchair_Cyclist, Bminchow, ChrisDK, DJSprtsch, Fivezzz, Leadbelly, LosBrolin, Shalgo   3 (Kelderman)
14=   BluesInTheBottle, JustSomeGuy, SafeBet   2 (Fuglsang)
    17   RedheadDane   1 (Hindley)
    18=   The rest   0
       Collective_Wisdom   0

    Standings

Yet again, the top three is stable, but double figures jumps into the top ten  for two of Guerrero's teams, and even Bjerg as a unique pick gets an 8 place move up.

    1   Del1962   385
    2   Nathanptz   339
    3   DJSprtsch   243
    4   BicycleBoy   226
    5   Laarsland   222
    6   BikeRacer33   217
    7   ArchieBoy   216
    7   Mellow_Velo   216
    9   Googolplex   215
    10   Bminchow   209
    10   ChrisDK   209
    10   Fivezzz   209
    10   Leadbelly   209
    10   Nakazar   209

    Main game

Apart from the stage points, there was a fair bit of change in the KoM classification, and about 400m of GC action that had some effect.

GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida   156   3
    KELDERMAN Wilco   60   8
    VISCONTI Giovanni   35   1
    HINDLEY Jai   31   1
    BJERG Mikkel   25   1
    FUGLSANG Jakob   20   4
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves   18   11
    GEOGHEGAN HART Tao   15   1
    ---
    KANGERT Tanel   -15   1
    HOLMES Matthew   -18   2
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven   -45   30
    GANNA Filippo   -56   3

Kruiswijk's loss of 3 places hurts most teams (but not Googolplex, DJSprtsch, Jakob747 or Redhead Dane):

1   Googolplex   161 (Guerrero and Fuglsang)
2   Laarsland   125 (Guerrero and Konrad, but Kruijswijk)
3   Comodoro   110  (Guerrero, but Kruijswijk)
4   DJSprtsch   78 (Kelderman and Almeida)
    5   Shalgo   49
    6   LosBrolin   48
    7   RedheadDane   37
    8   Bminchow   33
    8   Fivezzz   33
    8   Leadbelly   33
    11   Armchair_Cyclist   21
    12   ChrisDK   17
    13   Jakob747   0
    14   ArchieBoy   -12
    14   Mellow_Velo   -12
    16   BikeRacer33   -14
    17   BluesInTheBottle   -25
    17   JustSomeGuy   -25
    19   Nathanptz   -27
    20   AmisVelo   -31
    20   Rote_Laterne   -31
    20   Salvarani   -31
    20   Search   -31
    24   Triley36   -38
    25   SafeBet   -40
    26   Kazistuta   -46
    26   Nakazar   -46
    26   Scrool07   -46
    29   Otoxiep87   -53
    30   Northerner   -64
    31   Koronin   -65
    32   BicycleBoy   -85
    33   Yellow_Knight   -101
    34   Del1962   -102
       Collective_Wisdom   -31

    Standings

Hanninen lost some time to Rubio, but still remains one CQ point, and about 3 1/2 minutes, ahead, so Leadbelly leads into the rest day.  DJSprtsch , by virtue of omitting Kruijswijk, moves onto the virtual podium.

I sometimes dig up some other stats on a rest day, but I might have to leave you to do that for yourselves tomorrow.
