2020 Vuelta a Espana CQ game
« on: October 13, 2020, 11:37 »
The Giro is still going on, and the Ronde is a few days away, but La Vuelta starts (fingers crossed: this morning's Giro news does not imbue confidence) a week today, so let's start this.

Your Team  8 riders who take part in La Vuelta, whose total cost is 3500 CQ points.

Rider Prices  CQ points for the year to 11/10/20 (it wouldn't be practical to take prices to the 18th), as in the selection tool.

Your points earned  The CQ points for the event, including stage points, mountain and sprinter classification and a bonus for the red jersey wearer as well as GC points.  The full scale is on the selection tool.  There is a minor classification based on stage points only: some managers like to submit their team with one eye on that.

Entering By PM on Velorooms or Cycling News to me, by the start of stage one on Tuesday 20th October.  Please use the full CQ version of rider names, and do not have anything other than their name on each line. (The selection tool will help on that too.)

Issue resolution  In the case of discontinued stages or prematurely finished race, I will follow CQ's decision about points allocation.  If your team is overbudget or has ineligible riders, I'll let you know as soon as I can and hopefully you will swap, but I will replace riders if necessary with next most expensive from same team (if possible) or next most expensive in the race.  And if there is a tie or identical teams, there has been a precedent in the current Giro, so I will refer to that if necessary.

Results service  There should be daily updates.

It is probably going to take a while for the startlist to be finalised, so no need to be in too much of a hurry to get your team in.

Good luck, and enjoy the game (if the Vuelta happens)

    Most teams have now confirmed their line-ups, and I have chosen my mob and got the spreadsheet ready: looking forward to entries, and maybe even to a race taking place.

    Wow!

    Roglic ≈ #sunweb + #ag2r + #ntt + #bahrain + #trek + #lotto

    Could stretch it out to seven teams if we swapped Lotto for Total and Burgos.

    He can be afforded: Roglic + the seven cheapest riders still leaves 42 points in the budget, to choose from among the not quite cheapest.

    But will anyone go for it?

    Between us we have chosen 51 of the 176 riders, 18 of them as unique picks, who were marked with an asterisk in the previous list.

    On 26 teams: MAS NICOLAU Enric  (omitted by ArchieBoy, Laarsland, Redhead Dane and Vladimir)
    23:  DUMOULIN Tom
    16:  VLASOV Aleksandr, FROOME Chris
    13:  CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, GAUDU David
    12:  SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro
    For the Collective Wisdom team, I have used these seven, who have a total cost of 3487, and cheap unique pick Dylan Sutherland.

    While I have been preparing those pages, Googolplex has weighed in with his team:

    BENNETT Sam
    VLASOV Aleksandr
    DUMOULIN Tom
    IZAGIRRE INSAUSTI Ion
    GROSSSCHARTNER Felix
    ABERASTURI IZAGA Jon
    GAUDU David
    POWER Robert

    Despite what my pupils might claim, I am not so rigid as to disqualify him.  If any of you want to give a mental asterisk to his results, that is your perogative.  He adds a unique pick in Bennett, but robs Fivezzz of what was his only UP (Grossschartner), and is pretty low in the popularity table.

    I trust you, RL.  And if you did cheat, you have at least imposed a  five-fold penalty on yourself.

    Stage 1  Totally unlike the opening stage of any GT I have seen or heard of

    Green points (Is the point competition in the Vuelta green? I have a mental blank)

    1   LosBrolin   77  (Carapaz, Martin D, Mas and Carthy)
    2   RoteLaterne   72 (Carapaz, Martin D, Mas)
    3   Triley36   51(Carapaz, Mas, Kuss, Bagioli)
    4=   AmisVelo, BikeRacer33   50 (Carapaz, Mas, Kuss)
    6   BluesInTheBottle   48 (Carapaz, Mas, Bagioli)
    7=   Armchair_Cyclist, Comodoro, Del1962, Luthor, Northerner, Scrool07   47
    13=   ArchieBoy, Vladimir   40
    15=   BicycleBoy, Bminchow   33
    17=   Leadbelly, Shalgo, Yellow_Knight   32
    20=   Nakazar, Salvarani   23
    22   Fivezzz   17
    23=   Googolplex, SafeBet   10
    25   Otoxiep87   8
    26=   ChrisDK, Kazistuta, Koronin, Mellow_Velo, Search   7
    31   RedheadDane   3
    32   Laarsland   0
       Collective_Wisdom   47

    Main Game

    With this being a stage one that was all about GC contenders, and their failures, this might have more correlation to real standings than usual.  Or not: seventeen more stages will tell.

    1   LosBrolin   1522
    2   Triley36   1270
    3   BikeRacer33   1186
    4   RoteLaterne   1173
    5   AmisVelo   1035
    6   BluesInTheBottle   1022
    7   Luthor   1012
    8   Bminchow   1002
    9   Armchair_Cyclist   957
    9   Del1962   957
    9   Scrool07   957
    12   Comodoro   929
    13   Leadbelly   927
    14   Yellow_Knight   888
    15   BicycleBoy   886
    16   Shalgo   884
    17   Northerner   883
    18   Nakazar   882
    19   Salvarani   878
    20   Fivezzz   792
    21   Vladimir   736
    22   ArchieBoy   724
    23   SafeBet   722
    24   Otoxiep87   654
    25   Kazistuta   591
    26   ChrisDK   572
    27   Koronin   545
    28   Search   532
    29   Mellow_Velo   487
    30   Googolplex   463
    31   RedheadDane   381
    32   Laarsland   263
       Collective_Wisdom   951

    PCS have left a few riders off the GC rankings so I had to fill in scores manually: hope that doesn't happen often.

    Team Velorooms (AmisVelo, ArchieBoy, ChrisDK, Leadbelly, Mellow_Velo, Otoxiep87, RoteLaterne, Scrool07, Search) Average 785
    CN Squad (BicycleBoy, BikeRacer33, BluesInTheBottle, Bminchow, Comodoro, Del1962, Fivezzz, Googolplex, Kazistuta, Koronin, Laarsland, LosBrolin, Luthor, Nakazar, Northerner, RedheadDane, SafeBet, Salvarani, Shalgo, Triley36, Vladimir, Yellow_Knight) Average 850

    And the numbers are here, in a Google Drive spreadsheet, and that should be updated each evening with the same link, although I tend not to post the link with every update.

    Anybody wishing they had done Roglic + 7 cheap makeweights yet?

    Stage 3 and still it's all about the GC guys

    Green points

    1   RoteLaterne   112  (Mertin, Carapaz, Vlasov, Mas)
    2   LosBrolin   105 (Martin, Carapaz, Mas and Carthy)
    3=   BicycleBoy, Shalgo   102  (Martin, Poels, Vlasov and Mas)
    5=   Bminchow, Leadbelly, Yellow_Knight   87  (Martin, Vlasov, Mas)
    8=   Armchair_Cyclist, Del1962, Luthor, Scrool07   47 (Carapaz, Poels, Mas)
    12   AmisVelo   44
    13   Comodoro   42
    14=   ArchieBoy, Vladimir   35
    16=   BikeRacer33, Triley36   34
    18=   BluesInTheBottle, Northerner   32
    20   Fivezzz   22
    21   SafeBet   19
    22=   ChrisDK, Nakazar, Otoxiep87, RedheadDane, Search   17
    27   Googolplex   15
    28   Laarsland   10
    29=   Kazistuta, Koronin, Mellow_Velo, Salvarani   7
       Collective_Wisdom   42

    Several teams with Dan Martin overtake yesterday's leader, with Shalgo  the latest top of the pile.

    1   Shalgo   236
    2   LosBrolin   232
    3   RoteLaterne   231
    4   Yellow_Knight   221
    5   BikeRacer33   178

    8   ArchieBoy   160
    9   Bminchow   152
    10   AmisVelo   118

    Main game

    Although the top GC guys are featuring, they are not changng their positions much.  The main differences today arose from Chaves' mechanical, and riders therefore passing him on GC.  Pinot becomes the first significant DNF, but the impact on the budget of his teams had already been felt.

    Stage 4  Now it looks like week 1

    Green points

    Not many sprinters chosen in this edition: we may see something very similar a couple more times

    1   Googolplex   70 (Bennett)
    2=   Luthor, Otoxiep87   40 (Philipsen)
    4   Kazistuta   17 (Thijsen and Moschetti)
    5   Northerner   6 (Kanter and Cort)
    6   Vladimir   5
    7=   Armchair_Cyclist, Salvarani, Scrool07, Search, Triley36   1
    12   The rest   0

    Standings

    Only Luthor from this stage's scorers appears at all, and only just

    1   Shalgo   236
    2   LosBrolin   232
    3   RoteLaterne   231

    Luthor moves up two places to 9th in both classifications.  Almost as ineffectual in the game as the Giro stage I have just updated, but doesn't annoy me in the same way.

    The temporary downing of Velorooms did not lead to a delay of the Vuelta, despite my requests to ASO.

    If you didn't find all the results and tables at Cycling News as it was going on, then I will refer you to it rather than reformatting everything and putting it here: I'll just direct you to it.

    Los Brolin won, Rote Laterne was second and the highest Velorooms entrant, and Velorooms completed a 3-0 whitewash of average scores in the GT games over CN: 1335 to 1283 this time.
