2021 Vuelta CQ Game
« on: August 06, 2021, 19:28 »
Vamonos...

The final GT of the season starts on 14th August, and so does our final CQ game.  As ever, scores and prices are based on CQRanking.com: to play the game choose 8 men riding in the Vuelta who have a total score for the year up to the race of 3500 points.  Your points in the game will be those given by CQ for performance in the race.
There is no adjusting of the team once the race has started: this is a one-shot game, so if your star rider DNFs on stage one, you are in the same position of helpless resignation to fate as his team manager.

This spreadsheet shows the points riders can win (Summary: 500, 375, 315, 265, 240 for the first 5 on GC, down in steps to 135 for 10th, 66 for 20th, 44 for 30th and 15 for any finisher below 50th; 70, 40, 25 for the first 3 on a stage, down to 1 for tenth; the same scale of points for overall Pts and Climber jersey contests (nothing for white jersey), and 18 for leading GC at the end of a stage.  Team TT points are different). but more importantly it has the prices for each rider that are applicable, which are the points a rider has earned in the 12 months to 8th August (minus some races held late in 2020 for which the 2021 edition has already happened). If you don't use that spreadsheet and prefer to look at CQ directly, then please be careful that you are using Sunday's prices and the 12 month points, not just the 2021 score .

Send me your teams by the time the first riders roll down the ramp for stage one on 14th August; use the PM facility on either VeloRooms or Cycling News forum to reach me.  It helps me if you give only the names of the riders (no teams or prices) and in the same format as CQ uses: they are also on the spreadsheet I mention above.

I appreciate that while this is familiar to those who have played these games before, I have probably not been as clear as I should be because I am hurrying somewhat this evening.  If you haven't played before but are interested, put a query in this thread or drop me a note.

CQ has done their download rather earlier than usual, and the selector spreadsheet has been duly updated, so the game is officially open for entries.   However, the startlist is far from complete (and I am away from home and spending less time than usual in front of my computer), so don't be in too much of a hurry.

Apologies that I never revisited the Tour game for this year with analysis of the best value riders/best possible team etc.   Perhaps I was subconsciously refusing to do so after my lot came dead last.

ChrisDK  has become the first manager to submit a team, so I have sent my team to him: I'm ready for more to follow.  We had about 40 entries for the other two GTs this year, so same again would be good.  By all means spread the word.

Last reminder:  28 teams so far, and a little under 7 hours to go.

Those 28 teams have 68 different riders on them, 30 as unique picks, and three on more than half the teams.

Teams vary from >90% to <10% of the possible highest popularity score (Collective Wisdom team)

4 different riders costing over 1000 points have been selected; 22 that cost fewer than 100 points sit alongside them in our selections.

If you have sent me a team and I haven't replied, please drop me a reminder.

    The Riders

    22 teams: LANDA MEANA Mikel
    20: JAKOBSEN Fabio
    17: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
    13: BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley
    9: PADUN Mark
    8: KNOX James, MODOLO Sacha
    6: BARDET Romain, DAINESE Alberto
The Collective wisdom team is made up of the above riders.  Yes, I know there are 9 of them, but Bardet and Dainese will each only contribute half their points to that team's score.

5: CICCONE Giulio, MAJKA Rafal, ROGLIC Primoz
4: CARTHY Hugh, KUSS Sepp, PIDCOCK Thomas, VANHOUCKE Harm
3: ARU Fabio, BAGIOLI Andrea, CHEREL Mikael, DE LA CRUZ MELGAREJO David, HAMILTON Lucas, KRUIJSWIJK Steven, MAS NICOLAU Enric, MOLANO BENAVIDES Juan Sebastian, SIVAKOV Pavel, YATES Adam

with Landa and Ciccone:   Safe Bet

    Team Similarity

We don't need any teams to select a tie-breaking ninth rider to distinguish between identical teams: the most similar line-ups are those of SafeBet and TRiley36 with 6 riders in common.
Five man overlaps can be found on several pairs of teams:
Amis Velo with Earns; Amis Velo with Northerner; Archie with Titan; Bicycle Boy with Rote Laterne; Bminchow with Del; Bonimenier with Leadbelly; Bonimenier with Safebet; Northerner with SafeBet; and Otoxiep with Yellow Knight.

    Four Seasons Championship
We have 12 teams who have taken part in all 4 of my in-season games this year (Spring classics, Giro, Tour and Vuelta), so they fight out the Four Seasons Championship, but with Leadbelly having a huge lead after winning both the Spring and Tour games, and the only challenger within a country mile, Otoxiep, having a largely similar Vuelta selection, this seems something of a foregone conclusion.

    But the standings so far:
    1      Leadbelly      6424
    2      Otoxiep87      5864
    3      AmisVelo      5205
    4      Rote_Laterne      4925
    5      Mellow_Velo      4816
    6      Comodoro      4672
    7      Del1962      4587
    8      Bminchow      4548
    9      BluesInTheBottle      4417
    10      Armchair_Cyclist      4331
    11      Triley36      4262
    12      Search      3615
          Collective_Wisdom      4900

And the most important pre-game data, the teams for the Great Inter-Forum Challenge
Cycling News: Berflamand, BicycleBoy, BluesInTheBottle, Bminchow, Bonimenier, Comodoro, Del1962, DJSprtsch, Earns1985, Koronin, Northerner, RedheadDane, Rufs, SafeBet, Salvarani, Titan31, Triley36, Vladimir, Yellow_Knight
VeloRooms: AmisVelo, ArchieBoy, ChrisDK, Leadbelly, Mellow_Velo, Otoxiep87, Rote_Laterne, Search

Now I'll get on with this evening's stage result.

Stage 1 Short Time Trial, but not a TTT

    Green points
The stage points, but the same distribution for all stages, therefore not the same as the Vuelta Green Jersey.

    PointsTeams
    ROGLIC Primoz      70      5
    ARANBURU DEBA Alexander      40      0
    TRATNIK Jan      25      1
    SCULLY Tom      15      0
    CERNY Josef      10      1
    VAN BAARLE Dylan      7      0
    BAGIOLI Andrea      5      3
    CRADDOCK Lawson      3      0
    MATTHEWS Michael      2      0
    VLASOV Aleksandr      1      1

Bicycle Boy has both Roglic and Cerny: the rest of who has whom should be obvious.

    1      BicycleBoy      80
    2      BluesInTheBottle      70
    2      Mellow_Velo      70
    2      Rote_Laterne      70
    2      Search      70
    6      RedheadDane      25
    7      Berflamand      5
    7      Bminchow      5
    7      DJSprtsch      5
    10      Salvarani      1

    Red points
Stage points, GC, green jersey and  polka dot standings, and the daily red jersey points all bundled together.

    1      BicycleBoy      1008
    2      BluesInTheBottle      853
    3      Mellow_Velo      774
    4      Rote_Laterne      763
    4      Search      763
    6      RedheadDane      557
    7      Bminchow      535
    8      Berflamand      480
    9      Triley36      416
    10      SafeBet      413
    11      DJSprtsch      404
    12      Northerner      340
    13      Koronin      302
    14      ArchieBoy      276
    15      Vladimir      270
    16      Del1962      264
    17      Armchair_Cyclist      257
    18      Otoxiep87      254
    19      Rufs      253
    20      Comodoro      248
    21      Salvarani      247
    22      Yellow_Knight      195
    23      Earns1985      179
    23      Leadbelly      179
    25      Bonimenier      177
    26      ChrisDK      174
    27      AmisVelo      172
    28      Titan31      125
          Collective_Wisdom      213

And the early lead goes to VeloRooms
    CN 382
    VR 419

The spreadsheet is here: it will be at the same place throughout, and I won't bother posting the link every day.  It is a link to the updated file, so there is not an archive of the status after each stage, because I can't imagine anyone will ever feel the need for one.
But you will see a couple of teams entered into it that don't feature in the tables: two managers had alternative teams that they were thinking of using but rejected.  It is no bother to have a tab for such teams if anyone else has a plan B that they wouldlike me to keep track of, or any late entrants to see how they would have done.

Stage 2 Alpecin wins in stage 2 are this year's thing

Jakobsen is a very popular pick, other sprinters aren't, so the sprint stages in this game will very much revolve around where he may place.

    PHILIPSEN Jasper      70      0
    JAKOBSEN Fabio      40      20
    MATTHEWS Michael      25      0
MOLANO BENAVIDES Juan Sebastian      15      3
    ARANBURU DEBA Alexander      10      0
    ABERASTURI IZAGA Jon      7      1
    LAAS Martin      5      0
    MINALI Riccardo      3      1
    VERMEERSCH Florian      2      0
    ALLEGAERT Piet      1      0

    Green points today

All of those who had a non-Jakobsen scorer today also had Jakobsen

    6      Salvarani      40
    6      Triley36      40
    6      Yellow_Knight      40

    Green Standings

Three of the Roglic teams also have Jakobsen: that might make for a group who will feature, at least in this classification.

    Red Jersey
Sprint stages don't usually see many changes in GC, but quite a few riders who did OK in the ITT finished behind the peloton today, and whenever some riders lose position, others gain places, and projected points, even if they gained no time.

I will show some of those riders selected for the games each day, who gained or lost above some number that I choose on a whim.  There might not usually be as many as I am showing today though.
    JAKOBSEN Fabio      83      20
    VLASOV Aleksandr      54      1
    KUSS Sepp      38      4

    HAIG Jack      -51      2
    YATES Adam      -69      3

And if the riders have large score changes, the teams they are on will too.

And after that, our standings (although remember that as most of these points come from projected GC positions, remember that this is about as informative as to the final results as are the GC standings after a prologue and a sprint.)

I'm back where I finished the Tour de France game...

At least neither team has to bear the burden of my score on their average:
    CN 463
    VR  539

Tomorrow should also have big changes, and the beginnings of something that might resemble a realistic GC.

The presumably temporary high positions of Taaramae, Elissonde and Calmejane make this a less accurate projection of where we might be by the end than it would otherwise have been.  But I wouldn't expect big changes for a few days.

Rather like yesterday, it is someone dropping down that table that makes many of us see our riders gain points.  But no matter how popular Little Kenny is, I suspect most of us wouldn't have wanted it to be Taaramae who fell away.

    Standing
Who flinches first: TRiley or PRoglic?  Because at the moment the most likely looking challenge to our leader is the accumulation of Red Jersey points by Roglic.  But he might contrive to loan that out again today.

† The rarely used tie-breakers come into action: order determined by the score of the teams' second (then third, 4th etc) highest placed riders: Mellow Velo leads Search by virtue of Dainese outpointing Cepeda, and Bernal has more than Jakobsen, to Otoxiep's advantage.

Meanwhile, the inter-forum competition has seen a huge gap grow:
    CN 966
    VR  1134

The spreadsheet, as ever, is here.

Stage 7 Heartbreak for a legend, and red jerseys are not given away that easily.

    Green points

Otoxiep even takes more than half off his deficit in the 4 Seasons battle (although still 234 pts behind Leadbelly in that)

Tomorrow should be mainly about the green points.

As if the previous two days hadn't happened, TRiley is back to having a leading margin of almost 300 points.  As Grossschartner droped from his second place, Otoxiep had to give back his briefly help leader's status.

Stage 10  An Odd sort of a day (sorry, couldn't resist)

Sorry it's late, like much of the peloton, I had a busy morning but by the afternoon I fancied an extension to the rest day.

    Green points
The stage battle won't have excited many of us in terms of our vested interests

    5      Search      7
    6      Del1962      2

    Standings
The scores were modest, but enough to get Berflamand and Safebet into the top ten (3 and 4 place jumps respectively).  Second placed Search also scored, but it will take a lot more than the odd sixth place to close the gap appreciably.

When two unpicked riders vault across the top 18 riders on GC, it'll be bad news for the scores of everyone.  Those who picked Kuss (0 points on the day) are probably the nearest we have to winners.  We suffer in proportion to how well our teams were doing on GC, so last placed Koronin tops the day, and leader TRiley props up the table.

The Roglic teams probably don't need to fear their loss of points too much, although they will miss out on a few days of Red Jersey bonuses.  Yates and Bernal teams are probably more bothered by this result, and those with Landa are probably just happy that the large majority of the other teams are suffering similarly.

    Standings
More of a compression than a total overhaul.
†Tiebreakers move Otoxiep back to second (the tiebreaker penalises those with a big main scorer, and MV has Roglic)

A fairly tame second week means that the restoration of GC points to the more fancied riders (or some of them at least) probably won't happen for a while, but today's final kicker might shake up the order a bit.

Stage 13 So what happens if you have a sprint and no-one follows the train?

Yesterday's was probably the latest update I have ever done in these games, today might just be the quickest...

Tomorrow should see major points for the main GC riders, partly because they will be expected to challenge for the stage points, but largely because the odd interlopers at the top of GC would be expected to fall away.

Maybe tomorrow we'll see the restoration of expected order.  Maybe the Roglic teams will have to wait a while longer before they start getting red jersey bonuses again.

    I haven't mentioned the inter-forum championship for a while:

Stage 15 I didn't watch it, so I have no smart comment to make.

    Green points
    MAJKA Rafal      70      5
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven      40      3
    HAMILTON Chris      25      1
    YATES Adam      15      3

    KUSS Sepp      3      4
DE LA CRUZ MELGAREJO David      2      3

Koronin has Majka, Hamilton and Kuss; Bonimenier and Leadbelly both have Ciccone as well as Majka; Bminchow links Kruijswijk and Kuss; Safebet combines Yates, Ciccone and Kuss.

Ciccone's withdrawal, and Roglic losing some points in the classification standing, are the most significant elements other than the stage points.

I'm sure none of the chasers would have wished an accident on Ciccone, but TRiley's loss of one of his GC men opens up the competition a bit.  Still some way to go to catch him though...

Stage 16 I guess that is what they mean by Roglstomping.

    Green points
    ROGLIC Primoz      70      5
    KUSS Sepp      40      4
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel      25      17
    YATES Adam      15      3

    MÄDER Gino      3      0
    MEINTJES Louis      2      1
    CHAMPOUSSIN Clément      1      2

Once again, Lopez in addition to Roglic gives the day to Blues.  SafeBet beats most of the Roglic teams, with Kuss, Lopez and Yates.

With two fairly random breakaway stages to come, where the next stage points will go is anyone's guess, but it is very possible that there will be few of them won by selected riders.

Most of the teams who spent >60% of their budget on Roglic took Landa as their second GC man: Blues in the Bottle took Lopez instead, which pays off today, as he becomes the best placed challenger to TRiley.

So, two likely breakaway stages and a time trial to come.  Roglic is likely to get more 36 leader points plus plenty of stage points in the TT, and there might be some GC movement, particularly on Sunday, but is there breakaway potential among the remaining riders of the top three teams?
    You decide:

    LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
    JAKOBSEN Fabio
    KUSS Sepp
    CORT NIELSEN Magnus

    KRUIJSWIJK Steven
    JAKOBSEN Fabio

Sorry about the delay: the spreadsheet suddenly started reporting untenable scores, which eventually traced back to mishandling capital letters with diacritics, and was also being very inconsistent with the =INDIRECT formula, which is pretty key to bringing everything together on the results page.
If anybody with proper knowledge of Excel, rather than my self-taught hit and miss and lifting code from other sheets approach, would be able to cast any light on the matter, that would be much appreciated.

It was beyond my Friday night head, but I have repopulated all the results tabs and refreshed other bits: I think I can now process yesterday's results and get something meaningful.  At least I am starting from  a proper position of Thursday's standings.

Stage 19  How did they not catch that breakaway?

    Green points
    CORT NIELSEN Magnus      70      1
OLIVEIRA Rui Filipe Alves      40      0
    SIMMONS Quinn      25      0
    BAGIOLI Andrea      15      3

    CRADDOCK Lawson      5      0
    DAINESE Alberto      3      6
    TRENTIN Matteo      2      1
    KRIEGER Alexander      1      1

That was an inspired unique pick, that might yet be enough for TRiley to hold on to the overall lead.

And gives him back the lead in this category

    9      Northerner      576      0

    Red points
Other than the stage points and red jersey bonus, the main relevant detail is riders that were below Meintjes moving up GC a bit (I only watched the last 15km or so: Carlton must have been unconsolable).  Modolo had been a fairly popular pick for those with not much budget left for their minor riders, but will not be giving an infinite percentage return.

Looking at the remaining riders for the top teams, as I posted them yesterday, I would suggest that the outcome depends on whether today's break stays clear.  If Padun stays in it and scores well, the Roglic teams have definitely had it.  But if all or most of the breakaway riders are caught, such that Roglic claws back most of what Cort gained yesterday, than TRiley will have to pray that some of the other time trialists have held back enough energy to limit the race leader's stage points tomorrow.

I don't really see any TT points potential in TRiley's team, so a win or second for Roglic tomorrow should give the minor classification to Mellow Velo.

    Red points
With 20 km to go, it seemed like there would be a few one or two place moves in the top ten, which might have seen a bit of a shake-up of the game, but at some mysterious point somewhere in the last 20km, two thirds of our teams lost 324 points relative to this morning.

Berflamand's multiple good picks today have already been noted: he also avoided the man to be avoided today.  At least Lopez's capitulation disguises the loss that his countryman Bernal had for almost as many teams.

I said above that Mellow Velo needs a win or second to take the Green classification here: he really only needs Roglic to finish to be safe with his win here.  And assuming that Roglic finishes with a high finish, my comments of a couple of days ago about Rote Laterne missing out on a podium because of Meintjes DNFing will probably be proven wrong.

Stage 21 As if there were any doubt...

    Final batch of Green points
    ROGLIC Primoz      70      5
    CORT NIELSEN Magnus      40      1
    ARENSMAN Thymen      25      2
    CERNY Josef      15      1
    HAGA Chad      10      0
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley      7      13

    KRUIJSWIJK Steven      3      3
    MAS NICOLAU Enric      2      3
    IZAGIRRE INSAUSTI Gorka      1      0
If Cort had held on for the win, he would have overtaken Jakobsen for stage points.  Both of them are a long way behind Roglic though.

1      BicycleBoy      85    Roglic and Cerny
    2      Mellow_Velo      73    Roglic and Kruijswijk
    3      BluesInTheBottle      70   Roglic
    3      Rote_Laterne      70   Roglic
    3      Search      70   Roglic
    6      Triley36      42    Cort and Mas
    7      Bminchow      35   Arensman/Kruijswijk/Bernal

    9      Otoxiep87      12    Bernal and Grossschartner
    10      Other Bernal teams   7

    Final Green Standings
Another of my inaccurate projections: Roglic of course won the stage, but Cort's second place was enough for TRiley to hang on to the win in the minor classification.

    Final red point allocations
De la Cruz didn't quite make the point scoring top ten on the stage, but he gets a final two place rise on GC, the only significant change there.  Cort moves to third in the points classification.

I know I said I would after the Tour, and never did, but I certainly hope to do some number crunching tomorrow.  In case I don't, knock yourself out.

    Nice one MV. :cool

So Velorooms won three of the four year's titles? Both in terms of the actual winner and the averaged out H2H scoring?

    Not bad. :shh
