2022-2024 Emerging Riders CQ Game
« on: December 26, 2021, 15:47 »
We all like to think that we are pretty well informed about this sport we follow, and have our ears to the ground about the next big thing to expect.

So who are the riders who are only beginning to announce themselves at this stage, but will get big results (or at least consistent decent results) in the next few seasons?   Who still has moderate salary expectations but would be amazing value if a team were to sign him up on a three year deal now?

That is who the Emerging Riders CQ Game challenges you to identify: 18 male riders who thus far have fewer than 200 CQ Ranking points (each) in their career, and will score well between now and the end of the 2024 season.

When to submit my team? By the end of 15th January UK time (I'm willing to run the risk that the competitiveness of the game is spoiled by riders showing that they have the potential for world domination in the NZ Cycling Classic, which I think is the only event before that).

How do I submit my team?  By PM to me on Cycling News or VeloRooms (although Amis Velo did put his selection through the door of my house on what I assume was the envelope of one of his Christmas cards last year). Please submit your riders in the CQ format (Surname Givenname) and extra gratitude if you manage to get Spanish, Portuguese, Danish and Eritrean names in the same combination that CQ uses.  The huge, but by no means exhaustive, list of names here should enable you to get the right format and confirm eligibility.

How do I check that a rider is eligible? At the bottom right of each riders page on CQ is a bold printed (dark red on white) 'Points', and at the bottom right of that is a rider's lifetime score (for example, Valverde is over the limit by 35736.)  Or, check that he is on the list.  If he is straight out of Juniors, or you know he has done very little yet, then he is obviously fine.  To give you an idea, you are looking for someone who has achieved less than recent threshold passers Julius Johansen, David Dekker of Emmanuel Morin.

Can I choose female riders?  Sorry, no.

Is there an age limit?  No, if there is a rider who you think will be a late bloomer over the next three years, pick him.  There are many riders on the list who have taken a handful of points over 20 years or so (usually in nat champs of countries that have few cyclists). By the same token, if there is a teenager who you think will do so well in 2024 that he will justify his selection in that year alone, have at it.

Is there a limit to my team's total cost?  The 199 point limit is for each rider, not for your team. There is a logical upper limit of 3582, but concentrate on each rider, not on the total.

What about doping? For a while, CQ stopped removing scores, even when the UCI had cancelled results.  I notice that they have now resumed doing so (see, for example, Jaime Roson).  If your rider is caught cheating, and points are removed by CQ before the end of the game, then you'll lose them; if they are slow about it, you might get away with it.

How expert do I need to be?  Not very.  The winner of the edition that has just finished missed out on Vingegaard, Higuita, Pidcock and other big scorers, but opted for a rider who had three times as many points before the game than he got in the three years of the game: not one of us took Valter or Bissegger, but nine of us included Karel Vacek, who scored one solitary point in three years.
And if you are really lacking ideas, I have put a list of riders selected for the main 2022 CQ game that are eligible here into the eligible names list file linked above, and repeated it in reply 5 below.

Good luck

Of course, I did my pre-selection months ago, when the season ended. So I was waiting for this thread to be open  :D

This year I managed to cut the "short" list in just 28 riders (with no juniors this time!).
    8 from 2002
    8 from 2001
    5 from 2000
    4 from 1999
    2 from 1998
    1 from 1997

What I think I'm going to do, is in first place get rid of the 7 older riders (full u23 squad then) and finally say "see you next year, dont go over 200 please" to the 3 riders from 2002 in my list that are not proffesionals yet.

Then, the final 18 riders list is going to look like...
    5 from 2002
    8 from 2001
    5 from 2000

Yep I know, very concentrate list this year, just taking a 2 years hairpin. But I'm sending the team like that. Anyway, I have 2 weeks to change my mind and make armchair crazy.

My team is in too. Picked using my usual kind of fuzzy logic.

They're all "Half-Price Heroes" ie. under 100 points and not 200.
Deliberately nobody from previous years (I think).
Quite a few refugees who didn't quite make the cut in my main game team.
Three riders who however are in both teams.
One 99er and one 03er, but the rest are in Cordi's age range of riders (I think).
Missing a fair few obvious picks, but maybe not as many uniques as in previous games.

    7 WT
    8 PCT
    3 CT

Hopefully I won't let the VR side down too much.

Well, unexpectedly I'm going to make some ammendts in my team  :D

It's just two of the older guys that I let down previously... One I think I shouldn't pass on him, and the other I think can be a precious rare pick. So... Two maybe still slightly green 2001 kids are making room for them.

So for now, the final 18 riders list look like this:
    5 from 2002
    6 from 2001
    5 from 2000
    1 from 1999
    1 from 1998

My hopefully very competitive team consists of 6 riders that are also in my main game team. 11 different nations, 10 WT, 7 PT, one Conti. Birth years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Just under 2 1/2 days to go, 25 teams in so far (quite good, assuming that there are several that will be submitted at the eleventh hour)

113 different riders have been picked, 49 of them just once, and 8 are on more than half the teams (and 3 teams have all 8 of them).

The most popular selection has 88% of the maximum popularity score, the least has 33%.

77 riders who were picked in the main game have not been picked up in this one yet (including 5 who were chosen 4 or more times there), while 30 names are active in this game but not the main one (8 of them more than once).

But this note isn't here just for stats geeks: it's to remind you that you have until 23:59 GMT/UTC on Saturday (or in practice, until I get to my inbox on Sunday morning, so long as you avoid riders from the Aussie national championships) to get the names to me.

    Good luck

So for now, the final 18 riders list look like this:
    5 from 2002
    6 from 2001
    5 from 2000
    1 from 1999
    1 from 1998

Well, last minute change. It's a guy coming from other sport. He wasn't even on my big list because I doubted about his commitment to road cycling, but I just read an interview that gives me good vibes so let's go.

I sack another young lad from 2001 to make room. Final composition of the team:

    5 from 2002
    5 from 2001
    5 from 2000
    1 from 1999
    1 from 1998
    1 from 1994

Note that the 3 older guys that are no longer u23, came late to road cycling from other sports (triathlon, track, mtb).

    And they are off
With 25% of the field left behind as soon a the flag drops.

40 teams, which is more than we have had for a few years, and quite a few new entrants, which is great (although they are all from Cycling News, which makes the weighting of the inter-forum battle a bit askew).  It's always a bit disappointing when some regular players don't appear (HugoKoblet, Jakob747, Karaev, Kryvo, Ludwigzgz, Muddy Waters, Northerner, Yellow Knight): I hope all is OK, guys, and that you have simply had a busy week.

So, who have we got, and who have they got?

    The Riders
In case you weren't counting, there are 131 of them named above, 51 with asterisks.

At the other end of the scale, we have (I think) a new record for popularity of pick in any CQ game: Ayuso is on 95% of teams.  As far as Emerging games are concerned, Evenepoel, who surely was more hyped, was on, I think, 34 of 37 teams, and IIRC, Simon Yates was on all but 2 teams when he was at this stage, but I can't remember how many entrants there were that year (I'll look it up later).

    38 teams: AYUSO PESQUERA Juan
    32: BARONCINI Filippo
30: PLAPP Lucas (bringing a 100 point head start)
    27: BRENNER Marco
    25: UIJTDEBROEKS Cian
    24: DE LIE Arnaud
    22: TIBERI Antonio, VERNON Ethan
    21: UMBA LOPEZ Abner Santiago
    20: ASKEY Lewis
19: ROMO OLIVER Javier, VANDENABEELE Henri
    16: VAN TRICHT Stan
15: PICCOLO Andrea, SHEFFIELD Magnus, STEINHAUSER Georg
    14: LEEMREIZE Gijs, WAERENSKJOLD Søren
There are 18 names above this: they are the Collective Wisdom team

    13: VAN GILS Maxim
    12: GREGOIRE Romain, NYS Thibau
11: BAYER Tobias, JOHANNESSEN Anders Halland
9: HOOLE Daan, VAN DIJKE Tim, ZINGLE Axel
8: HAGENES Per Strand, QUINN Sean
7: PRICE-PEJTERSEN Johan, RANGEL COSTA Vinicius
6: ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo, GLOAG Thomas, HAYTER Leo, HVIDEBERG Jonas Iversby, PONOMAR Andriy, VERMAERKE Kevin
    5: PITHIE Laurence, SVRCEK Martin
4: BERTHET Clément, CHARMIG Anthon, FETTER Erik, HEALY Ben, LÜHRS Luis-Joe, MAYRHOFER Marius, MILAN Jonathan, RODENBERG MADSEN Frederik, STORK Florian, VAN DEN BOSSCHE Fabio
3: ANDERSEN Idar, CHEVALIER Maxime, DRIZNERS Jarrad, FERRON Valentin, GUDMESTAD Tord, HEIDUK Kim, KORETZKY Victor, LAPEIRA Paul, PARET-PEINTRE Valentin, PEÑA JIMENEZ Jesus David, STAUNE-MITTET Johannes, STEWART Campbell, TEJADA CANACUE Harold Alfonso, TURNER Ben, VERRE Alessandro
2:  CAMARGO PINEDA Diego Andres, GAZZOLI Michele, HOLLMANN Juri, LAZKANO LOPEZ Oier, MARTINELLI Alessio, MARTINEZ Lenny, O'BRIEN Kelland, OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro, PAQUOT Tom, PENHOËT Paul, PIDCOCK Joseph, STRONG Corbin, SWEENY Harrison, TOUMIRE Hugo, VAN UDEN Casper, WANDAHL Frederik, ZAMBANINI Edoardo

And yet there will be riders who score well by the end of the 3 years who are not on these lists, who will embarrass us all and will be logged as the Collective Ignorance team.  (we don't know who they are yet, but it might be fun to guess)

    Team popularity

In case anyone is new, the popularity table ranks the teams according to the number of teams each of their riders is on.  For example, nearly all of us got 38 points for Ayuso, while any unique picks on your team will have got you just one point. Koronin and Leadbelly are the two that lack Ayuso, Redhead Dane somehow positions herself lower in the popularity table than Leadbelly despite that.

Bminchow's team was high, but by no means top, until he sent in three changes that greatly boosted his standings here: whether De Lie, Leemreize and Vernon give a greater boost than Ardila, Drizners and Van Dijke to the final score remains to be seen.

I should have mentioned in the post above that there were some interesting swings in the popularity of riders: Baroncini was as popular  as Ayuso for a long time, but later submissions had a far lower rate of inclusion for him; Leemrieze, Vandenabeele and Romo all hung on to the top 18, but were among the top 6 or 8 for a long time, and a few riders were notable for their frequency in the entries of the last couple of days: Sheffield, Gregoire,Nys and Bayer.  And although Koretsky was only on 3 teams, they were, if memory serves me well, three of the final five to arrive.

I have already explained above the Collective Wisdom and Ignorance teams, but there are two others in the bottom bit of the list that might need explaining.
The Main Game 2022 team is made up of the most popular players in the main annual CQ game, hosted by Skidmark, that are still eligible here.  There is a difference in player base, but also a difference in pricing priorities, in that game, so there Uitdebroeks is very close to Ayuso, and a long way clear of Baroncini in popularity there as opposed to here.  No unique picks here, but Milan Vader is on 6 teams there and only 1 here: Javier Romo is on 19 teams here, but only 5 there.
Good in 2021 represents, I suppose, the laziest way of selecting a team; they are the top 18 scoring riders in 2021 that are still eligible here.  Low in the popularity rankings because it necessarily excludes those coming up from the juniors, and maybe because of a tendency against choosing again riders who didn't perform as we hoped in Year 1 of the previous edition.  But no-one thought that Wirtgen, Delettre, Zoccarato or Hocevar had done enough last year to be worth a punt here?

The make up of the CI team will constantly change, and it expect it to lead for about a year and a half, as it cannot contain anyone who has not yet performed well.  But who might it contain at the end of 2024?  Who did you consider, but omit, and you were surprised to see that he is not one of the 115 riders that someone else fancied?  On those grounds, I will propose Sam Welsford (and perhaps those 4 from the Good in 2021 team) as likely to feature in Collective Ignorance.  Who do you think will be there?

Just checking and the only two I had on the long list that didn't make it onto anybody's team are Riccitello and Martin Lopez. Maybe the latter has the best chance of doing something. He got some special advice from Guama which he is putting in practice - work on your TT!

I'm greatly surprised Reuben Thompson is a unique pick. Winner of Aosta lads!

Was one of the 3 youngster I sacked (alongside Askey and rare pick Toumire) to make room for the addition of those 3 older guys coming from other sports, that were Romo (a triathlete until 2020, high in the popularity ranking), Stewart (track rider until 2021, silver in omniun in the OG) and Koretzky (mtb rider, quite older than the rest, who's going to make a shot to road racing starting this year). The frenchman was a high risk pick I just decided in the last minute, but even knowing that, he isn't a unique pick  :angry

Other good unique pick is Felix Parra, one of the main leaders of spanish PT Kern Pharma, that is going to have a great calendar (is expected to go to the Vuelta a España). Late bloomer but good climber, was in my last short list before cuting to make it 18 riders. Fetter and Sweeny were other 2 rare picks that were so close to enter my team.

    ...
In the first long list I made (of rougly 70 riders) there are some for the CI team: Not too exciting pros like Lars van den Berg, Simon Guglielmi or Joel Suter, a good looking neo pro like Maurice Ballerstedt and a kid coming fresh from juniors with big potential like Alec Segaert.

Also there are like 20 of the unique picks of other managers. I don't know why, but in the end I always bet on the ones that become mainstream  :lol

    Odds and ends

If we were to rank the teams by the number of career points their riders had before the game starts (obviously less than 200 for each of them), we would have:
    1      RedheadDane      2610
    2      LukasCPH      2507
    3      Scrooll07      2294
    4      RoteLaterne      2113
    5      JonEzeitza      2011
    6      Rufs      2006
    7      Otoxiep87      1995
    8      Del1962      1896
    9      Repre      1880
    10      Armchair_Cyclist      1879
    11      Fivezzz      1859
    12      Greenedge      1851
    13      Salvarani      1846
    14      DevilsElbow      1818
    15      AmisVelo      1755
    16      Madrazo      1752
    17      SafeBet      1733
    18      EdkDeus      1649
    19      Squire      1618
    20      Nakazar      1614
    21      Bonimenier      1578
    22      Kazistuta      1538
    23      Bminchow      1513
    24      Comodoro      1496
    25      Cordi      1494
    26      Skidmark      1467
    27      Riverside      1447
    28      Nathanptz      1392
    29      Blues_in_the_Bottle      1386
    30      LosBrolin      1385
    31      JumboVismaFan      1353
    32      Ray10      1272
    33      Laarsland      1256
    34      Josedin      1235
    35      EvansIsTheBest      1227
    36      Nyssinator      1111
    37      Koronin      1029
    38      Vladimir      1015
    39      Berflamand      845
    40      Leadbelly      731
          CollectiveWisdom      1630
          CollectiveIgnorance      0
          MainGame2022      1118
          Goodin2021      2969
I'm not sure that that demonstrates much other than propensity to go for riders who have already established themselves a bit.  No surprise that the Good in 21 team outscores everyone, something of a surprise that RHD and Lukas get as close to that score as they do.  Leadbelly's score reflects his self imposed handicap of only having riders with a maximum pre-game career of 100 rather than 200.

    Inter Forum Challenge
Eight of our players represent (by virtue of submitting their teams there) Team VeloRooms: AmisVelo, Cordi, Josedin, Leadbelly, LukasCPH, Otoxiep87, RoteLaterne and Scrooll07
Everyone else (apart from me: strictly neutral of course) is on the CN Forum team (31 of you).
Inter-forum rivalry is determined by mean average score.

Last year we had a group who additionally represented Equipo Parliamento Ciclismo, of whom I think only 4 remain (Cordi, Comodoro, Jon E and Josedin: have I got that right?)  I can include them again, but are there any other Spanish/Iberian players who would like that team expanded to include them?  Anyone else think they can claim a group identity with a minimum of say 5 from the entrants to put up an average score?  Scandis? Anyone other than myself and (I assume) Del old enough for a "Rebellin is a youngster" team?  Have we ever identified a large contingent of any particular profession on the boards?   And collectivity you care to propose, put it up here and if you can get a group of at least 5 and I'll include them. You will still be on your forum's panel, and you can be in more than one group, but even if your team turns out to be a flop, it will give you something to cheer for.

    Team similarity
Obviously the higher popularity teams are the ones most similar to any other team, but the maximum co-incidence in selection is 13 (Amis Velo and Bminchow, the two most popular teams) but also Rufs and Scrool07.
There are also several overlaps of 12 riders:
Amis Velo with Armchair, Bonimenier and Fivezzz
    Bminchow with Fivezzz and Skidmark
    Devil's Elbow with Squire
    Madrazo with Squire

In terms of similarity with Collective Wisdom, Bminchow and Amis Velo each have 15, then Cordi (14), Skidmark (13, also the Main Game selection) and Fivezzz and Squire (12 each).

Despite omitting Ayuso, Leadbelly and Koronin manage to find some common ground with everyone else, even each other (they share Akessandro Verre, also picked by Riverside) except that Leadbelly and Redhead Dane find no common interest at all: their teams are totally mutually exclusive.

Amis Velo, Cordi and Squire draw equally on the Main game team, with 12: Redhead Dane has just 1.
Lukas has 9 of the 'Good in 2021' team: no-one else has more than 6 of them (Leadbelly, for reasons already pointed out, has none).

There is a tab on the spreadsheet to show your similarity to other teams.

    Current standings
Other than new Aussie champ Plapp (100 pts, 30 teams), I believe the only other selected rider off the mark is Laurence Pithie (17 points from NZ Classic, 5 teams), which would mean that we have 4 joint leaders (Devil's Elbow, Los Brolin, Nakazar and SafeBet), with Comodoro in 31st place.

    Spreadsheet
Unless Google does something unexpected,  the spreadsheet should remain here indefinitely. See what else you can discover in it!

I aim to do updates early each month, life (and other CQ games) sometimes interferes with that. I don't always include the link to the spreadsheet when I post them, but you know where to find it now.

You are locked in for three long years now: enjoy the unveiling of heroes and the dismemberment of dreams.

I'm a bit surprised about the many Askey and Vernon picks. Askey is likely used as lead out and Vernon probably too. But then I don't follow track and it's always a risk leaving out  #deceuninck neo-pros.

Riders I thought would be more popular: Vader, Edvardsen-Fredheim, Thompson, Garifoli, Bittner, Balmer.

Leon Heinschke/Hugo Page/Edoardo Zambanini might appear in the CI team, but I'm not sure they are omissions that I regret (but ask me again in late 2024...)

No unique picks! :o I think that's a first for me.

But nevertheless a very 'unpopular' team all around. I choose to interpret that as having picked riders that only few others thought of, but that were nevertheless not so obscure as to be unique picks. In other words, a very good selection.

I'm greatly surprised Reuben Thompson is a unique pick. Winner of Aosta lads!
He was on my shortlist for a long time, but eventually I didn't pick him as he 'only' has 64 career points until now. So he can score up to 135 points with #cgf this season and still be available for 2023-2025 (when he'll probably move up to the WT team), in which case I'd definitely pick him.
