Video Sites Blocked In India
Dim:
Interesting stuff coming out of India.
A number of European isp's have been told to block access to several bit torrent sites (namely the pirate bay). But the indian government ordered their isp's to block not just torrent sites, but also the video sharing sites Vimeo and Dailymotion.
At the moment it looks like just two indian isp's have followed the instructions, Rcom (reliance) and Airtel, and Rcom bizarrely have also blocked the bookmark sharing site Xmarks.com
--- Quote ---Dailymotion has significant partnerships in India: like in case of YouTube, many content owners host their official channels, with news, music videos and clips, on the video sharing site – sites like Rajshri Media, iStream.in, Saavn, BollywoodBackstage, NDTV, Mid Day, NewsX, Lehren, GlamSham have a presence on the channel. Readers might remember that the Samajwadi Party, the political party which won the recent elections in Uttar Pradesh, also livestreamed the inauguration ceremony of its Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on DailyMotion.
MediaNama has contacted Raajh Singh, Managing Director, Dailymotion India, for comments and inputs on what they’re planning to do about this block.

Trying to scour out the actual statement/guidelines the Delhi High Court or the DoT made, but what I can guarantee is that a John Doe order was given with regards to piracy of a Hindi film by the name Singham, produced by Reliance's Big Cinemas. It included the sharing of the film via torrent sites and through the lesser monitored video sites like dailymotion. That's the preliminary reason for it.
As for Reliance and Airtel, they're corrupt bastards who definitely can't hold the candle of morality. That's another story though. Other connections have started blocking these sites too, can't see dailymotion from mine.

Anonymous proving, as always, what a bunch of muppets they are.
They hack the supreme court website. From the info released, it wasn't even a supreme court order ffs :fp
and then they post this sh*t-
Namaste #India, your time has come to trash the current government and install a new one. Good luck.
Oh yes, piracy is the outstanding issue for India to trash a government ::) Hello softcocks, please file a PIL to the courts if it's so bloody vital, or promote it in such a manner.
Not getting much information with regards to this, but what I have found is that a film production company, Copyright Labs, sent notices to ISPs to block illegal URLs, not the whole websites. No kneejerkisms whatsoever by the ISPs there. Still can't find the court orders and it's all opaque so far, maybe I'm searching the wrong place.

yeh, ZDNet now picked it up

--- Quote ---The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India are currently blocking websites in accordance to a Supreme Court directive. As of now Reliance Communications and Airtel are blocking The Pirate Bay, Vimeo, DailyMotion and a few other torrent sites across parts of India. The note users in India subscribed to the Internet through these ISPs are seeing is:
Access to this site has been blocked as per Court Orders
The reason behind this censorship is a John Doe order obtained by film distributor Relance Entertainment. Citing piracy concerns ahead of blockbuster releases, Reliance Entertainment has been using John Doe orders to get websites blocked. Since Reliance Entertainment and Reliance Communications are under the same leadership, the companies worked together in restricting access to the websites. Speaking to Rediff.com, Reliance Entertainment’s VP for anti-piracy said, “Our primary contention is that the copyright of our films should be protected, and that they should not be available for viewing or downloading on sites. But for Dangerous Ishhq, only our own affiliate will block the sites. We are not saying that the entire site should be blocked. Other ISPs should ensure that they block the availability of our films, not the entire site.”
As Airtel users started getting affected, infamous hacktivist group Anonymous decided to retaliate. The hacktivist group called for supporters to target websites of the Supreme Court of India, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, data.gov.in, and All India Congress Committee (AICC). As of writing this only AICC is down. The attack is a Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDoS) whereby the website is so inundated by visitors that it crashes. The official Twitter page for the co-ordinated DDoS @opindia_revenge seems to have backed down and are desperately trying to explain Indians that their actions do not harm the websites but only cause some downtime.

Aye, this is the only basic information that's been released. The problem is that bloggers and journalists have been dodgy with regards to court order interpretation, and it's the official order which I'm searching for. They usually do keep a record of such things.
