Quite some time to go, but the Caribbean Championships' course was tested over the past fortnight with the Course test race

The twelfth edition of the Caribbean Cycling Championships will take place in Antigua, far better known for this terrorising trio of Sir Viv Richards, Andy Roberts and Curtly Ambrose

Antigua outbid their main competitors by an astonishing 90%. The course will take the riders from the fairly new Sir Vivian Richards stadium, out onto Factory Road, past Mount Joy Roundabout, Pares Village, making the right into Collins, Bethesda, Red Hill, Cobbs Cross, Falmouth, Liberta, All Saints, Jonas Road, back onto Factory road, North Sound making the right at North Sound Roundabout onto the roads surrounding the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium to the start/finish for 4 laps equaling 84 miles.

The outright home favourite should come from the Elite Women's division which should see Tamiko Butler, the defending TT champion, take on the course.

Last year's TT result

Antigua and Barbuda's long list for the championships-
First team
Jyme Bridges (National Champion), Robert Marsh (National TT champion), Marvin Spencer, Andre Simon and Omari King

2nd team
Clint Henry, Walton Francis, Ashley Rhoades, Ken Jackson, Dale Richardson, Brian Lyn and Neil Lloyd (including 2 reserves)

Women's
Tamiko Butler (National champion RR and TT and Caribbean TT champion) and Kevinia Francis

Rattlers club coach Barry Gordon will be coaching the team. Guess Tamiko won't be perfectly pleased by it ;D
Elsewhere, the Breakaway Club shall provide one or two riders for the Jamaican team

Not often do you see a second placed rider chuffed to bits, even more so than the winner-

That's Dahlia Palmer from Jamaica celebrating her silver medal.

Anyway, there should be better coverage this time around as the ABACA are better multimedia lot than Jamaica cycling, and not to mention that it'll be a bigger event considering the comparative size of each country.

The test race over the championship course.

Seems undulating to me, the race should be all over the place.

An update about the Antiguan team, Guyanese born Godfrey Pollydore had expressed his desire to represent Antigua in the championships and had skipped the Guyanese National Championships in an effort to do so, but had his hopes quashed by the ABACA president, Cliff Williams.

Quote from: Godfrey Pollydore
Last week when it was Antigua’s championships, it was also Guyana’s championships and they told me that I had to be in Guyana to ride the championships to qualify for the Caribbean Championships that would be held here in Antigua. But since I was in Antigua and I finished fourth, I would expect that Antigua would give me a bye on their team. I don’t mind riding for Antigua so it’s up to the (selectors) to say ’well, we don’t have no problem with you riding for us.'

He was deemed ineligible to represent Antigua because of his lack of eligible Antiguan passport.

Pollydore later added about the Caribbean championships course, in which the test race took place
Quote
The course is pretty tough. It had my back aching, but I just tried my best and survived it. But the guys should do pretty OK. But if Guadeloupe is going to be there and Martinique, it is going to be totally different because the guys from Martinique and Guadeloupe are on a level a little above us actually and you have to be really fit to compete with these guys and beat them coming to the line because they are really pretty good in the hills.

I will be supporting Belize, which has a strong history in track cycling (as well as one or two bad apples ;)). I would imagine that the wet season will make preparation for the Caribbean Champs pretty difficult but I'm sure they'll be there with bells on.

As I mentioned in the shoutbox earlier, I passed a TT while I was over there last year. Humidity and road surfaces were rough, but there was a lot of support from the roadside as the route passed the national prison.

In honour of Belizean cycling, I just wanted to post a bit more about an annual Belizean race which is ultra-popular. Mods feel free to move it if you like.

Cross Country Cycling Classic, Belize

The big road race of the year is the 140m / 225km Cross Country Classic, which takes place at the end of the dry season in April and attracts a field from all over the Americas.

Starting in Belize City, the race follows the National Highway west through the administrative capital Belmopan and, in a move reminiscent of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, doubles back at San Ignacio, where I stayed when I was there. Top prize is BZ$16,000/US$8000 (a heck of a lot of money in BZ). The toughness of this race is augmented by the massive tailwind on the outward leg turning into a hot, dry headwind on the return leg.

Following six years of domination by foreign riders, prior to the 2012 edition Channel 7 News asked the important question: could a Belizean break the cycle?

As it turned out, the answer was yes. Giovanni Choto broke away solo and beat the foreign competition, which he described thus:

Quote
Yes they were tough and ting but I think they underestimate that they mi feel that I mi wah can’t reach and that dah weh catch them.

Presenting the prize, Minister for Sport Herman Longsworth said:

Quote
Mr. Choto, you have made the Ministry five thousand dollars poorer, but we love it.

Cheers for that larri. I be supporting Antigua because of the their achievements despite such a tiny population (no nothing to do with cricket at all). Carn Jyme Bridges. Till the championships, I'll just be populating this with ABACA's domestic racing scene.

Just to hammer home the dominance of the Guadeloupe riders (and Martinique when they ride) over the elite from Antigua and Barbados too, 19 year old Edwige Belair beat Clarico Mickael in a sprint in the John T memorial (in memory of cyclist John Thomas) on the 8th of July. Both the riders are from Guadeloupe. In third was former Frenchman and now of St. Maarten, Damien Maroni.

Jyme Bridges was 6th, nearly 3 4 minutes behind and defending champion Walter Grant Stuart (also Guyanese Road Race champion in 2011 and usually the best Guyanese rider) was further behind in seventh and eleven minutes behind the winner. Guyanese Champion, Orville Hinds was 5th a minute ahead of Jyme.

The Non finishers? Godfrey Pollydore and Barbadian starlet Russell Elcock (also national TT champion at 18 years of age).

Meanwhile, Guyana hosted the Ballot Box classic

Jude Bentley is the Guyanese TT champion, he may well go to Antigua.

From Guyana cycling news

Quote
Raynauth Jeffrey wins Billy’s Food Mart Friars Hill Challenge

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Antigua & Barbuda’s top cyclist, Jyme Bridges Jr, was beaten by a visiting rider from Guyana when they competed in the Billy’s Food Mart Friars Hill Challenge held on Sunday.

Bridges had to settle for second place in A Class of the event after clocking 2:08.25.301 to finish more than a second behind Guyana’s Raynauth Jeffery who was delayed in Antigua on his way home following his participation in the John T Memorial Race held in Anguilla two weekends ago.

Jeffery furnished a time of 2:07.08 to capture the event and pedal away with the title.

Bridges found himself sandwiched between two of Guyana’s top riders as Godfrey Pollydore, who is no stranger to the roadways here, finished third in 2:08.25.319.

Question times for Guyana now, Raynauth has been one of the in form men, behind the dominant domestic force, Robin Persaud. Form or pedigree?

Got to copy paste as this guyanese news reporter's only on stalkbook

Quote
A senior Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) official is said to have resigned after Kaieteur Sport published last week what an inside source called malpractices within the federation; the General Secretary of the GCF is believed to have called it quits.

Our informed source told us yesterday that the federation’s General Secretary has resigned ahead of Saturday’s scheduled Annual General Meeting (AGM) that was one of the bones of contention within the federation. It is customary for the General Secretary to report on varying matters at the meeting, but that seems doubtful owed to the alleged resignation.

When contacted yesterday, GCF President, Cheryl Thompson declined to comment on the matter of the General Secretary’s resignation. “I don’t want to comment at this time,” Thompson said in a brief telephone conversation with this newspaper.

Thompson added that the federation was expected to meet yesterday afternoon. She also declined to offer any comment on the possible subjects of yesterday’s meeting; asked for an exclusive and timely interview, Thompson highlighted her busy schedule.

“This is a very busy time for me, Monday to Fridays, so I don’t want to commit myself to that at this time, Thursday maybe,” Thompson said. Last week an internal member of the federation had expressed disapproval of several aspects of the GCF administration.

Among them, it was alleged that a high-ranking official has been hiding correspondences if it has nothing to do with her son, who is a cyclist. The source informed that Robin Persaud and Alonzo Greaves were both invited to compete in Trinidad and Tobago recently.

Upon the receipt of this information, the GCF official enquired from Trinidad and Tobago why a request was not made for her son among the two riders. The source said Trinidadian officials told the GCF official that her son could compete on his own funding.

That feedback did not sit well with the official, who allegedly purposely ducked the participation of Greaves and Persaud. The source mentioned this issue among allegations of financial mischief and as noted before, the absence of the AGM, which is now set for Saturday. (Edison Jefford)

pedigree......Raynauth is just  17 years old and is currently Guyana's 3rd ranked rider, he started racing in 2011 and is very inexperienced but is very strong and aggressive. He can be a force to reckon with internationally because he is not being guided correctly, he is a bit on the slower side on the finishes.

The race was short, based on the Garmin, it was 26 miles with most of them into a cross headwind. There were many attacks and accelerations as usual in Guyana and with  about 10 miles to go a group of favourites separated themselves. Those in the group that did not make the top 6 were Paul DeNobrega, Rastaff O'Selmo, Alex Mendes, Junior Niles, Raymond Newton, Davanand Bissoon....maybe one or two more. There were many attempts to escape this group' as usual Alanzo and Robin are marking each other and Alanzo looking at Raynauth (Robin team mate and most aggressive rider here), National Champ Orville Hinds put in a strong attack at 1 km and Alanzo being the faster man was forced to shut it down as everyone arrived at the finish together. In the end the winner was comfortable and won be two  bike lengths.

Any idea if Emile Abraham will be available for T&T? He did ride the well disrupted tour of T&T AFAIK.

Hey Ram you seem to be well informed about racing in Guyana. Eric Sankar is a 33 year old that won then Guyana's biggest race in 1998, the Independence 3 stage, he usually wins a race or 2 every year, the kind that will sneak out when the heads look at each other. He like all racers here are working riders, he has job commitments but has win once this year and placed third in our national champs. He is a guy that is slow but he usually gets there in the end, especially in long races.  I think WG Stuart may have problems with the organizers because of his disability, that's why he wasnt selected. Croal is in his early 20's and placed twice in the top 6 in his entire career. I Don't know how & why he is here on the team.  A big name missing from the teams is Warren McKay, who is a big winner in local races, if he is in Guyana.
Can't say much for Emile & T & T.

Those are the confirmed participants. Still waiting on few confirmations.

ABACA had a Caribbean Champs test course TT race. No surprises in the winner Rob Marsh beating Jyme Bridges by well over a minute. Marsh finished in an even 56 minutes.

ABACA saying that the preparations for the event are well on schedule. Seem to be a few sponsors around for the race. Good stuff.
