[1.1] Challenge Mallorca - 5th to 9th February
« on: February 04, 2012, 23:56 »

teamskyfans.com - powered by Bikemap
The Challenge Vuelta Ciclista a Mallorca is a series of [s]five[/s] four one day races held on the Spanish island of Mallorca each February. Ranked 1.1 on the UCI Europe Tour it styles itself as the "Tour of Mallorca" but has never actually been classified as a stage race by the UCI because riders dont have to ride all five races if they dont want to. This means that teams can take squads to the race often as large as twenty riders and change them around over the course of the five days making it an ideal training race. There is an unofficial overall classification awarded as well as mountains, points and sprints competitions. The first day of racing is the Trofeo Mallorca, a criterium around the streets of Palma. The second day is the Trofeo Cala Millor or the Trofea Alcudia, a flat course with a likely sprint finish. Days three and four see the Trofeo Pollenca and the Trofeo Soller which are run over hilly courses includng the climbs of Col de Soller, Col de Puig Major, and others. The final fifth day sees the Trofeo Calvia which takes place over an undulating course with a series of climbs throughout.

Fenn is definitely class, with a bit of luck/team he could have got gold in Copenhagen. Wasn't sure if he was going to get a whole lot of opportunities this year though.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Fantastic, I was wittering on about Fenn before last season and I must admit felt disappointed that he didn't make a bigger splash at AN Post. It was interesting that Sky didn't pick him up but going to Quickstep is a great move for him and with this result, my hopes for his future success are relaunched.

They were interested, but I think it was between him and Luke Rowe, and I think Lukes time on 100% ME benefited as he was much more acquanted with the British setup, and Puccio was a bit too good to turn down. And with Kennaugh only in his first full year, Appollonio still young,  it may have been one youngster too many.

In one way, Mallorca isnt serious racing, its a training ride for many, but at the same time there are some good names there and its a really good chance for Andy to show that he deserves some attention and a shot in the smaller races later in the year. For a full pro debut though he must be overjoyed.

Holy crap Andy Fenn! Not exactly elite competition but impressive nonetheless, today's parcours was no cakewalk.

EBH doesn't seem to be sprinting well at all right now. Only February though.
