[2.1] Course Cycliste de Solidarnosc et des Champions Olympiques
« on: July 03, 2012, 06:55 »

While most people seem to think the only race in July is that annoyingly loud and crass event in France, cycling does live on in other countries and in some countries there is more than one event. While the organisers are yet to confirm it, there are rumours that a second Polish race had to be organised just to accommodate the shear number of beautiful podium girls that are found there

Hitch may try and point to the history of cycling in poland or come up with another reason but will be defeated as that means he would need to argue that Polish women are not that sexy

Anyway, the race starts on the 4th of July in Lodz and this will be the 23rd edition of the International Cycling Race of Solidarity and the Olympians or Course Cycliste de Solidarnosc et des Champions Olympiques or Wyścig Solidarności i Olimpijczyków. The tour has 6 stages totally 900 km's split over 5 days ending at the finish in Yaroslavl.

While the first 3 stages are for the sprinters but the second half of the race features a number tougher stages that should decide the overall winner. The race includes 21 teams including all of the polish teams and a number of foreign teams from Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Russia, Italy and Morocco.

Christina Watches will start with Stefan Schumacher for the overall and Angelo Furlan for the sprints. Marco Adria Mobil have Marko Kump, NetApp team bring Andre Schulze and Whirlpool-Author who dominated in the Czech cycling tour bring Thomas Buchackiem and Dukla Trencin. The Polish teams include BDC Marcin Sapa MarcPol and Robert Radosz. BGZ Bank includes ProLigi 2011 winner Luke Bodnar,Tomasz Smolen and Mariusz Witecki. The leader of CCC Polsat will be Marek Rutkiewicz and successful young sprinter Greg Stepniak.

Stage 1. Lodz - Belchatow

a short opening stage, flat and only 76 kms long, very unlikely to be anything other than a flat out bunch sprint

Quote
Lodz is the third-largest city in Poland. Located in the central part of the country, it had a population of 742,387 in December 2009. It is the capital of Łódź Voivodeship, and is approximately 135 kilometres (84 mi) south-west of Warsaw. The city's coat of arms is an example of canting: depicting a boat, it alludes to the city's name which translates literally as "boat".

Piotrkowska Street is the main artery and attraction stretching north to south for a little over five kilometres, making it (one of) the longest commercial streets in the world. A few of the building fronts have been renovated and date back to the 19th century.

It is also home to the national film school

the finish town of Bełchatów has the largest coal fuelled thermal power plant in Europe

Stage 2 Sieradz - Tuszyn

Second stage on the first day of the tour. longer than the first stage at 140km but just as flat and very likely to end the same way as the first stage and another bunch kick.

Quote
Sieradz is one of the oldest towns in Poland, thrice being a location for the coronation of the Polish monarchs. The town was attacked by the Tartars, Bohemians and Teutonic Knights. Polish Kings chaired six assemblies from here.

Quote
The Nazis destroyed traces of Polish culture, destroying historical records, monuments, and buildings. Street names were changed in an effort to wipe out any connection with a Polish identity. Bombed by the Soviets, more than 100 residents were killed. After an assault lasting three days, the Red Army arrived on January 23, 1945.

Stage 3

last of the initial sprint stages.

Quote
Łęczyca is one of the oldest Polish cities, mentioned in the 12th century. It was the place of the first recorded meeting of Sejm, the Polish parliament in 1182

Stage 4 Tomaszow Mazowiecki - Kielce

The start of the more interesting stages with 3 classified climbs in the final 50 kms. Although none of the climbs are huge they should be enough to shake things up. With 17 kms from the final climb to the finish line i am not sure this is the stage that will decide the overall but it should result in a much reduced bunch at the finish

Quote
Kielce is located in the middle of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (Holy Cross Mountains), at the banks of Silnica river, in northern part of the historical Polish province of Lesser Poland. Once an important centre of limestone mining, Kielce is now a centre of trade and commerce, with Kielce Trade Fairs (Targi Kieleckie) ranking third among Central and Eastern Europe trade fairs centres

Stage 4 nowy sacz - krosno

This looks to be the stage that will decide the race. 6 classified climbs spread throughout the stage, including several steep climbs. 2 trips over the climb to Zamek Kamieniec the second just 7 kms from the finish means we should see either one rider or a very select group fighting for the stage

Stage 6 Jasło - Jarosław

The final stage and while there are 3 classified climbs they look to be too far from the finish to be truly decisive. However if GC is close we may see someone make a bid on this stage

Unsurprisingly given it was 70kms long and dead flat the first stage ended in a full bunch sprint

there was time for some riders to get away with a Haba from Team Poland able to pick up some bonus seconds on the course, but on the line it was Jeff Vermeulen from Metec Continental who took the win from Matzka. Those really paying attention will of course know that Jeff won stage 3 of the recent Olympias tour and took a couple of podiums as well. as i cannot find any photos from Poland yet here he is winning in Holland instead

Again no shocks, the short dead flat afternoon stage also finished in a bunch sprint. This time it was Net App's Andre Schulze who improved from his third place in the morning with top step on the podium. With the top two from the morning failing to feature Schulze also takes over the overall lead in the race. This is the second win of the year for Schulze and also had 5th behind Greips in berlin recently. Randomly he also had two wins last year in the same two races as he was the winner of stage 2 of this race in 2011 as well.

Another flat stage, another sprint, another win for Schulze. Only other interesting (but disappointing) thing i noticed was the withdrawal of Moroccan rider Jelloul who has been in good form leading into the race. Hopefully things will start to get more interesting tomorrow. still cannot find any photos or video.

Also just noticed the :rasmussen is riding. how did i miss that

Honkisz said post race that if the race was on a flat finish, he'd have no chance but the ramp gave him an opportunity.

A crash in the final kilometre, just over 200 metres to go, put paid to Janiszewski's chances of a birthday gift.

is that his skin or is he wearing a rubber brown thing.

They all got credited with the same time, maybe the crash? But there's at least a second or two's gap there.

It was a hot day and the decisive break took place on the climb with around 20km to go, the first time up on the cobbled section of the Zamek Kamieniec. The break consisted of the Polish trio, Bartosz Huzarski, Mariusz Witecki and Adam Pierzga. Pierzga later dropped off and finished half a minute behind.

Post the race, Huzarski stated that he likes it hot (good taste, don't we all?) and that he wanted another win for the team.

Witecki later said that he was waiting for this stage, it was going to be the decisive stage and that he felt well. He also stated that they were on the limit as they pushed when the gap had reached 50".

Pierzga stated that the break was too strong on the flat between the two climbs and that he didn't have anything to offer on the final climb of the day, the second time up the Zamek Kamieniec.

The early break consisted of Piotr Gawronski and Głuszak Dariusz (Polish National), Valery Kaykov and Argueles rodriges (RusVelo), Thomas Frei (Christina Watches), Joshua Prete (Whirpool Author), Mouhcine Lahssaini (Morocco), Mykhaylo Kononenko (Kolss Cyclingteam) and Tomaz Nose (Adria Mobil).

The lead had grown to maximum of 5 minutes when the main group accelerated
