Cycling Nicknames
« on: March 27, 2012, 14:47 »
We love our nicknames on this board, and I love them even more than most. I thought we might attempt to compile a reference to help out those who have not been part of our insular little circle of weirdness for the past few years, and also for my personal edification.

Please contribute as many suggestions as you can, I will do what I can to maintain this post and a few mods have said they'll help. We may eventually get some sort of wiki feature on the site that would be a better place for this.

Note this is only for nicknames that are actually used here or elsewhere, not just silly mashings together of words to make fun of a rider, e.g. for Levi Leipheimer I would accept 'Bottle' but not 'leech-heimer' or anything equally lame. I'm also going to limit it to active riders for now otherwise we will be here all night.

UPDATE: I did the initial push on this but Drummer Boy has taken over and done a big re-organisation. The tables below are his from later in the thread. Many thanks to him for his excellent work.

  • Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

Some call him Zapatero because that was his nickname in Puerto. Though that is a bit mean.

Sammy is only ever really Samu.
As a joke to hype him up I sometimes write various differentiations of Sam in a row but nothing past that.

Should we have a legends section?

Le Bleaur. The Cannibal, The proffessor, Mr Paris Roubaix, Ulle, Big Mig, Falco, Gibo etc.

Updated. I am exercising a certain amount of editorial oversight when it comes to nicknames that are either just abbreviations or simply rubbish.

Also I made one up for Hoogerland: Captain Scarlet. He's indestructible! Also works because most of us remember him COVERED IN BLOOD

Hadn't heard all of these before. There's a few great ones there, I love Fromage for example, can't believe I hadn't thought of that earlier.

I'd add "Il Piccolo Principe" for Cunego; I never use the translated English version. And since "El Pistolero" and "El Imbatido" are in their original Spanish, it only seems consistent to add an Italian translation for "The Little Prince" as well I think. Also, two minor ones: I'd call Luis Leon Sanchez LuLu rather than LuLe. Now that I think about it LuLe makes more sense, but I never refer to him as such. And Contador is Bertie of course. If Andrew is in there, so should Bertie be imo.

By the way, does anyone know where Bottle actually originates from? One of the most common ones, but I don't know why he's called that.

Hadn't heard all of these before. There's a few great ones there, I love Fromage for example, can't believe I hadn't thought of that earlier.
