I'd add "Il Piccolo Principe" for Cunego; I never use the translated English version. And since "El Pistolero" and "El Imbatido" are in their original Spanish, it only seems consistent to add an Italian translation for "The Little Prince" as well I think.

I agree.

Der Panzerwagen - Tony Martin
Kukalukaluki (or similar) - Stephan Keukelukalukeleire - Possibly comes under the heading of, 'Lame mashing of names'.

Fredrigo must have a nickname surely? Indeed he does, "le nez de Marmande" Pithy huh?

Scarponi is Il Falco/The Falcon He has a Falcon spayed on his Helmet.

Garzelli has something on his helmet. looks like a puma. Garzelli used to be known as Il Pirata till Pantani took that.

Updated. I am exercising a certain amount of editorial oversight when it comes to nicknames that are either just abbreviations or simply rubbish.

Also I made one up for Hoogerland: Captain Scarlet. He's indestructible! Also works because most of us remember him COVERED IN BLOOD

Captain Scarlet works for me, nice one. :tu

Hadn't heard all of these before. There's a few great ones there, I love Fromage for example, can't believe I hadn't thought of that earlier.

I'd add "Il Piccolo Principe" for Cunego; I never use the translated English version. And since "El Pistolero" and "El Imbatido" are in their original Spanish, it only seems consistent to add an Italian translation for "The Little Prince" as well I think. Also, two minor ones: I'd call Luis Leon Sanchez LuLu rather than LuLe. Now that I think about it LuLe makes more sense, but I never refer to him as such. And Contador is Bertie of course. If Andrew is in there, so should Bertie be imo.

By the way, does anyone know where Bottle actually originates from? One of the most common ones, but I don't know why he's called that.

yeah i always thought Sanchez was lulu too.

And yeah lots of these nicknames ive never seen before.

Scarponi is Il Falco/The Falcon He has a Falcon spayed on his Helmet.

Garzelli has something on his helmet. looks like a puma. Garzelli used to be known as Il Pirata till Pantani took that.

Savoldeli was Falco so it can't be Scarponi.

Also seen the word boss appear a few times today but lance was "the boss".

No love for the legends by the way?
Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

Heres some more;
Andy Fenn - The Fenn Monster.
The fairly obvious John Tiernan-Locke - JTL or The English Gilbert.
Alex Dowsett - The Essex hitman
Stefan Schumacher - Stebbie. Or The Spaceman.

in fact JTL seems to have a different name for pretty much every post he is in

Note this is only for nicknames that are actually used here or elsewhere, not just silly mashings together of words to make fun of a rider, e.g. for Levi Leipheimer I would accept 'Bottle' but not 'leech-heimer' or anything equally lame. I'm also going to limit it to active riders for now otherwise we will be here all night.

Yet Greg van Avermaet = Greg van Average is allowed?

I would love to know about:
Heinrich Haussler = Barbie
Where does RVV come from?
What does Grand Boucle mean... and how do you pronounce it?
Why is Paris Nice called the race to the sun?

Barbie: "for his frosted hair and love of bling", Google tells. You might want to take a look at this strange website: http://adventuresofbarbiebarbie.com/  ;D

RVV simply means "Ronde van Vlaanderen", "Tour of Flanders" because, well, that's the name of the race and that's what the race has always been about, since 1913. Or are you talking about something else?

Similarly, la Grande Boucle: the big loop (of France). The English pronunciation would be something like "la grawnduh boocluh".

Paris-Nice is called the race to the sun because the riders go from North to South, and the weather is better in the South.

Thank you Sylvester, that was very helpful.

Yeah thats what I was asking about with RVV/Flanders.  I always knew what RVV was referring to... So Ronde = Tour and Vlaandern is Flanders?

The big loop hey... I always imagined it meaning something... I dont know... more grand.  Like 'the great race' or something.  Oh well.  As for the pronunciation... I really appreciate the effort (I really do)... it just did not help me much... but i struggle to pronounce the simplest of french words... I know that you dont say Ru-becks... but other than that... I suck.

Thanks again, I appreciate the reply.

Savoldeli was Falco so it can't be Scarponi.

You are right Hitch, Scarponi is 'The Eagle of Filottrano Fiorenzo' or in Italian 'l'AQUILA di Filottrano Fiorenzo'. So it is an eagle on his helmet.

JTL is used all the time
Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Dowsett used to call Andy Fenn the Fen monster when they were junior riders,  Stebbie for Schumacher is I think a rather obscure nickname but I've heard it somewhere before. JTL is often used as mentioned.

The other ones I made up.   Dowsett does sound like a gangster if you ever hear him speak so I went with The Essex hitman,,, its crap I know and wont catch on but I suppose you've got to start somewhere.

Can we restrict this list to ACTUAL nicknames that we use all the time?

Its not going to be helpful if you are looking for who "x" is referring to when they say "bottle"  if you are trawling through thousands of irrelevant names that no one actually uses for anyone.

Just my opinion

I haven't put this in. For now I'm leaving out nicknames that are just abbreviations or shortened forms of first names, unless the rider has another nickname that justifies them being on the list.

I can't see how to put JTL's real nickname on this list without using regular expressions.

Well, I must admit I've never heard 'Vinny' as in Vinokourov though it might be legit.   Whereas something like TGBM that was made up by a random Dutch poster last year Is heard all the time so Its a question of balance I suppose.   Its up to Jamesqe in the end because its his thread but I'm easy if the couple of lame ones I mentioned are taken out.

I'm going by the gut, it's impossible to make hard and fast rules for something as informal and fluid as nicknames. If this ever gets moved to a wiki we can have all the edit wars we want!
