would it not be sensible for it to be alphabetical?
The problem is, alphabetical how? By rider or nickname? It would most likely be the nickname that someone would be trying to look up, but with multiple nicknames for certain riders, that becomes a messy task. Of course it would make at least a bit of sense to list the riders alphabetically by last name, but who is going to sift through that entire list and rearrange it? Personally, I don't want to be associated with someone with that much free time on their hands.

Can we restrict this list to ACTUAL nicknames that we use all the time?

Its not going to be helpful if you are looking for who "x" is referring to when they say "bottle"  if you are trawling through thousands of irrelevant names that no one actually uses for anyone.

Just my opinion

I agree.
Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

Surely Peter Sagan has something catchier than "The Inter-Sagan Express"? I imagine he's called all sorts of things in the peloton...

I don't think I've ever heard a nick-name for Kittel?

What's the origin of Pope for Menchov?

I think we should simply call Sagan Monster. As for Kittel, nope, never heard a nickname for him.

Pope is one of my favourites, especially because of its origin. The Pope always kisses the ground, as does Menchov ;)

Another pretty obvious one though is Greg Henderson - Hendo

Glad to help. Actually, once the list gets settled a bit (or maybe it has already) I'll put together a companion list with the nicknames arranged alphabetically as well. Probably something slightly abbreviated so that people can check the main list for more info.

Well, I must admit I've never heard 'Vinny' as in Vinokourov though it might be legit.   Whereas something like TGBM that was made up by a random Dutch poster last year Is heard all the time so Its a question of balance I suppose.   Its up to Jamesqe in the end because its his thread but I'm easy if the couple of lame ones I mentioned are taken out.

I think TGBM was one of those that just caught on, it start maybe 12-18 months ago, and took off. In the same way , Thomas the tank engine for geraint thomas, starting during paris nice when he did the monster lead outs for hendo (that hendo couldnt keep up with) and stuck.. so thats only maybe a year old. But i think to be relevant nicknames have to been at least regularly used for a good 12 months in various circles (not just one forum, but twitter, facebook etc) to be accepted.

Regarding Sagan, i know Zam called him San Petro a few times though i don't know if that actually is his nickname.

I agree with that though is TGBM used outside the forums?

Though ironically it is probably used a lot more than something like Condor for Gesink, which though it is his official nickname, does anyone actually ever say that rather than just Gesink?

Happy Flanders Day everyone! (almost)  :D

I’ve put together two more lists (in two separate posts) for the forum. One for Nicknames (listed alphabetically), and a revised version of the Riders list of names, this time assembled in the more conventional manner of last-name-first.

First is the list of (108) Nicknames listed alphabetically. Anything with the word “the” or similar prefixes were left out or parenthesized, as well as non-keywords, in order to make it more easily searchable. For example “Smiling Assassin” is filed as “Assassin”;  “Little Prince” as “Prince.” Maybe we can agree on the best way to sort these. I’ve also added an asterisk to riders with multiple nicknames who are listed more than once.

I've also added "Frandy" plus two others: Sumi (Van Summeren); Z-Man (Zabriskie) (that’s what their teammates often call them)

I left out a few because I wasn’t sure if they were real and/or necessary:
Grimstad Buffalo? (Hushovd)
Captain Scarlet? (Hoogerland)
John Anthony Fletcher, Jan Anton Pijl
Jens! (Doesn’t seem like much of a nickname. I’m also amazed that he hasn’t acquired something more spectacular by now!)

But these are community lists, so feel free to modify as need be. For full nicknames, refer to the Rider list.

For another option, here’s the Rider list in alphabetical order but with the last name presented first in the more conventional way. We can us this to decide which version the community prefers, or we can keep them both. It’s easy enough to update them once they’re in this format. I would gladly defer to Dim or L’Arriviste on these matters. This format seems to make more sense, it was only due to the ease of copy/paste that the original list had the rider’s first name in front.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

I hadn't realized that it translated literally as "arrow." I've added it to the "P"s. Feel free to alter it as you wish however.

Good question. I also wonder about "Blow" for TB. Is that really used? It's seems a bit...unnecessary.  :-[
I'm going to remove that one from my list but am interested in feedback.
