Is he from Gotland?

And, yes, great list. It took me ages to decipher the in-crowd code when I started at CN.

There was an in-crowd?

I don't know why Ricco called himself the cobra ..there used to be a guy called michele covataio aka the cobra in palermo, he was a mafia boss.

Great discussion.

Does a nickname in this thing of ours come from "the thing of ours". hmm. Well isn't Ricco from northern Italy? Would Cavatiao be that famous in that region, especially since I hear Ndrangheta is more powerful in the north?

Also Michele Cavataio died a long long time ago. Though that could make it more likely since often gangsters from the past are the ones given cult status by future generations eg Billy the Kid or Al Capone in the US.

To get the answer maybe we need to ask ourselves, why is Nibali the Shark, Savoldeli the falcon, Gesink the condor, Madrazo the sparrow, Garzelli the squirrel etc.

Ps, how did you become a caporegime on here? Is it becuase you have 800 posts or is it something you gave yourself?
Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

Glad I asked about Pope because that's pretty funny :)

Kittel must have a nickname...somebody needs to tweet his teammates and ask.

Just realised while typing a post in the Favourite Race thread, where's La Primavera in the nicknames for Milano-Sanremo? Think that is used a lot more often than La Classicissima.

Also, I don't really like names like the Condor or the Shark. Especially for Gesink the Condor somehow seems a terrible misfit. I prefer a nickname that makes sense and is not just some random 'tough' animal a rider would like to be compared with. The Squirrel sounds better, don't know where it comes from but at least it's not as pretentious as the Condor. My favourites are names like Spartacus, the Pope, and the Smiling Assassin; names that actually refer to an aspect of the rider's style on or off the bike.

Oh, and Cuddles. Love that name, it's absolutely perfect for Cadel.

I think that riders having nicknames has become a branding move nowadays more than a riders style. Nibali has not done much to deserve the name 'Shark' nor Gesink 'Condor'. Riders in the past got names due to what they had done to the rest of the peloton countless times.

Obviouly there are some great nicknames, as above ,Cuddles.

The best thing about Cuddles is that ACF hates it. I remember a post where he threatened violence against the person who thought of it, then showed an angry face smiley.

Sammy d is i think the pocket rocket.
Basso - Ivan the terrible.
Nibali - the shark /squalo.
Boonen  - tomeke isn't it
Gesink -the condor.

Sergio Henao - the next big thing.

ASO - the Andy schleck organization.

Mind if i edit those in ?

Gesink hates that nickname.

Boonen is called Tommeke, Tornado Tom or de Bom van Balen. And my personal favorite: Monsieur Paris-Roubaix  ;D

He called him self a cobra because he likes to sneak upon his rivals and then attack.

Savoldelli is called Il Falco because of his legendary descending skills.

@Hitch - Flecha was called Pijl because that is translation of his name into dutch. And they basically made the spanish parts of his name into dutch.

So Juan Antonia Flecha becomes:
Jan Anton Pijl

Nathan Haas just tweeted that Haussler's new nickname is Buzz Aldrin
Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Races and nicknames listed in no particular order

RaceNickname
Milan - San RemoLa Classicissima ("The Classic of Classics")
The Tour of FlandersFlanders' Finest, Beautiful Flanders ("Vlaanderens Mooiste")
Paris - RoubaixThe Hell of the North ("L'Enfer du Nord")
Liège - Bastogne - LiègeLa Doyenne ("The Granddaddy")
Giro d ItaliaLa Corsa Rosa ("The Pink Course")
Giro di LombardiaThe Classic of the Falling Leaves ("La classica delle foglie morte")
Le Tour de FranceLe Grand Boucle
Paris - NiceThe Race to the Sun ("La Course au Soleil")
The Amstel Gold RaceThe Race to the Beer
Volta a Catalunya The Magical Mystery Tour
Dreidaagse de Panne Three Days of Pain
The Tour of BritainThe Tour of England
The Tour of CaliforniaThe 4th Grand Tour

Nice list. But I never got used to the Hell of the North. In Francophony, we are used to Paris-Roubaix being the Queen of the Classics.

It also got a third nick: The Easter Race (La Pascale) but I don't like it either.

Milab-Sanremo also has La Primavera. Lombardy is rather the Classic of the Dead Leaves and Paris-Tours, of the Falling Leaves, even though now with the change in the calendar, it might be the other way round.  ;)

Oh and Tirreno Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas and Paris-Brussels, the Classic of the Two Capital Cities.
