Get well Michael Torckler
« on: June 30, 2012, 04:34 »
Pure Black Racing cyclist and 2012 Tour of Borneo winner Michael Torckler has been the victim of a hit and run in California. His condition has improved from critical to intense.

Some not very good news Ram :(
Another article about him
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/7199460/Kiwi-cyclist-injured-in-hit-and-run

He's a top talent and had just recovered from a busted knee cap last year. Get well Michael Torckler.

From @CyclingiQ about Trockler:

Following, an update on Michael Torckler, who was involved in a alleged hit and run incident whilst training in Santa Rosa, California:

I've just spoken with Michael's father, Brohn. HaR occurred early Friday afternoon, CA time. Michael rushed to hospital in Sonoma county...
...Michael suffered "massive facial injuries" including multiple fractures to eye sockets & skull, but rest of body was almost unscathed...
...he was admitted to hospital approx 2:45pm Californian time on Friday in critical condition, but has since improved to intensive care...
...remarkably, his father understands Michael has received no external injuries to his face. CAT scans reveal no brain damage...
...the overall prognosis for Michael, according to medical staff, looks extremely good. His parents flying out from Auckland this evening.
Brohn Torckler specifically mentioned the massive support shown to Michael by the cycling community. Best wishes to Michael and his family.

That's some (relatively) good news! All the best for his recovery.

Cycling is a tight knit community, my arse. Not one mention of him in commentary, even the lesser so called tight knit sports have at least a mention of such events.

Latest update: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/7200081/Kiwi-Pure-Black-cyclist-critical-after-hit-and-run

Poor bastard ... he comes from just down the road from my home town ... Was too young to be racing when I was there, but I remember him making a really big mark on the local scene when he started - in local "classics" like the Round the Mountain (a 160km ride around Mt Egmont - terrain not unlike the Ardennes, but with much more wind - where he finished in the top 5 as a junior) - and always being written up as a genuine, really nice guy.

Fingers are crossed for him to pull through and - as others have said - have a bit of better luck than he's had over the past couple of years! :tu
From what I know of Torckler the racer, he started quite late (may be wrong though), and is Pure Black's best climber and attacked like mad when he had the opportunity in Malaysia (Both the mainland and Borneo).

Grouse that he's back speaking now though.

Saw on twitter the team have set up a fund to help support the family that travelled out to be with him. As we know Pure Black are not a team with many resources so if anyone can spare a couple of bucks this is the link

Initial reports said Torckler had suffered 20 fractures to his face and head.

Quote
Torckler has overcome adversity in the past.

A nightmare run of injuries – a broken collarbone, a bad cut to his left knee, a broken wrist and more surgery on his knee – have stalled him previously.

He broke his collarbone on stage one of the Tour of Southland in 2010, not long after winning the Wellington Classic.

On New Year's Day the following year he crashed on day one of the Tour de Vineyards in Marlborough, cutting his knee badly and breaking a bone in his wrist. Later on the knee required surgery.

The Tour of Borneo is his most notable success to date when delivering a mighty five-day performance to win Riding for the PureBlack team, Torckler held out Genesys team member Nathan Earle by six seconds after 20 hours of racing to retain the yellow jersey in the final stage of the five-day tour.

Not quite getting one thing though. Why was Torckler with bissell? Just a training ride with them or a transfer?

http://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/7208468/Injured-cyclist-could-soon-be-up-and-riding

Quote
"His recovery has been absolutely amazing," Mr Torckler told the Taranaki Daily News last night.

"Even though he looks as if he's almost dead in his bed and his face is swollen and he looks as if he's been in a boxing ring with Mike Tyson, he's reasonably comfortable."

CT scans taken since Michael was admitted to the critical care unit showed Michael has escaped any brain injuries and he was speaking in short sentences.

Quote
"He suffered more than 20 fractures, including his forehead, his eyesockets and his nose.

"His pain levels are almost down to zero and his sedation is zero now," Mr Torckler said.

"He's dodged this (accident) in such an amazing way, it's nothing short of that.

"Here's our boy that has been in terrible accident and after the swelling goes down he is going to be fine and we're away again."

Mr Torckler said the current prognosis for his son could realistically see him discharged from hospital in 10 days.

"Even now they are saying Michael could stand up and walk out of here breathing strongly, then we will just look after him."

Nice one Michael.

More good news ... They got the bastard that hit him!!  :)

http://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/7202683/Taranaki-pro-now-conscious

@ Ram - Not sure exactly when he started racing, but was definitely racing in his mid to late teens. By euro standards, that's late - but by NZ standards, that's pretty normal unless your folks were also bike racers ...

BTW - have you spent time in NZ - or you just a Kiwi-wannabe? ;)  ;) Some of the stuff that you post just makes me think that you've been there - at least long enough to pick up local phrases and things ...
Cheers for that, I missed this post earlier. ??? As for the Kiwiness, I'm a wannabe, as Indian as around, and never been to New Zealand.

Some details about what happened here
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20120702/ARTICLES/120709958

The driver does not come off well in that article. Though the lowish speed could well have been the difference for Torcks.

It seems he stole his father's car, thought it was just borrowing when you knick something off the folks.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Speculation is that the driver may face up to 10 years in prison for his charges.

Apart from that, not much on his health, which should be a good sign as it should mean nothing much to report.

He's listed as in fair condition now.

Torckler update, or more a recap, but a post about him-

Coralie Jenner, a Sonoma County resident who felt touched by Michael Torckler's crash, has made contact with his family and on July 5th wrote the following in an email to SCBC: Michael Torckler, "is recovering in a miraculous way, yet still has a long recovery road ahead of him.  Today he had surgery on his left arm (ulna) which was broken and had to be pinned.  He also has ligament tears in the left knee. He suffered 20 fractured to his nose, eye sockets, forhead, upper mouth plate, and sinuses.  His parents, Brohn and Linda Torckler, flew here immediately to be at his side and will remain here until they can take him home."

In the meantime, Jenner, a sports massage therapist who works primarily with cyclists, is working to organize a campaign to raise funds to help cover Torckler's extension medical expenses. So far, Shelton's Natural Foods in Healdsburg has agreed to accept donations toward this fund, and Jenner expects other businesses to sign on as donation sites in the coming days.

Torckler a couple of days ago

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20120708/ARTICLES/120709624?p=2&tc=pg

Quote
Torckler declined to comment on the specifics of his crash, but said he was lured to Sonoma County by a teammate who raved about the challenging and beautiful roads.

“I'd really been enjoying my time here. Training here is quite magnificent,” he said. “A lot of quiet roads, it's really enjoyable.”

Top man.

No worries mate ... you're giving it a fair old burl ... and ain't doing too badly really ... Sure, you've sucked the kumara a few times, but hey, at least you've had the good sense to try to become a Kiwi rather than one of those sheep shaggers from the other side of the ditch, so we've gotta give you a couple of points for trying ...   ;D

Oh, and if it makes you feel any better - I know diddly squat about rugby ... In fact I hate the game with an absolute passion ... so you'd probably be able to have a better conversation about the game with most Kiwis than I would!  :tu
I'll take any point on offer. Hey, I only follow real sports (even if you can't stand it) and not AFL likes :D Just forget that Argentina are one of the Southern hemisphere's four.

Anyway, rugby shan't be a problem for you considering you're in Canada now, if you are indeed in Canada and not a Kiwi in New Zealand with a crazy sleep schedule.

Good piece on the man who called the emergency number
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20120720/ARTICLES/207201051/1350

And some more on his recovery. He's fit enough to attend court now
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20120720/ARTICLES/207201034

His helmet was in one piece. Could be the difference along with quick attention.

ON the 17th of July, with Mum Torckler
