Wondering whether people will be as motivated to support Cadel at the Tour as expected...

Thor, etc started the yeear thinking they would be supported towards victories in the early part of the year and then repay that by supporting Cadel at the Tour.  While they have received that support, they haven't had the joy and inspiration of success so far.  Will that be a deciding factor when they are working for Cadel in the mountains and need to dig deep to cover a break?  Will any riders crack because they are a bit down mentally?

I think they will be fine in the Tour. Hushovd is doing the Giro I think, so not a certainty to start the Tour. I guess Evans/Gilbert/Hincapie/Burghardt/Van Garderen are the five locked in. Remaining four between Hushovd/Frank/Cummings/Morabito/Pinotti/Moinard/Schar/Lodewyck.

Gilbert and Evans will be interesting on Stage 1. Does Gilbert help Evans gain a few seconds, or does Gilbert take the win whilst Evans watches everyone else? Same for Stage 3 maybe. Evans doesn't need Gilbert though, he just needs to make sure he doesn't get Van den Broecked.

before the Classics I actually thought Thor might not do the Tour.  His wife is having a baby that is due mid-tour ... so I thought he might do classics-giro-olympics-vuelta-worlds

but not having much success in spring might have changed things.  He may very well WANT to do the tour now ... but still might not get a spot.

I think Phil will ride to win in Liege, then do rest of tour for Cadel.

Kind think Thor will miss the tour as well Poland Olympics Vuelta worlds

Arbs 1 more to the list of will be

Evans/Gilbert/Hincapie/Burghardt/Van Garderen/quinziato/ Evans loves him plus Burghardt needs a mate

the other 3

Cummings Frank and Moinard I think

For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

surely support in the tour was the reason they signed Cummings so baring after effects of injury think he will be there

yep - and Thor is actually not without his chances at the Olympics.  He can get up hills better than Cav, so if Cav gets dropped it might be down to Thor v Canc v Sagan ... with the form he is in maybe Boonen too.

Interesting to see where things go

I think Thor has made it pretty clear he will work for Cadel. He and Phil have made unequivocal statements about that fact. Thor still work for Tyler Farrar in the sprints even when the classics didn't go that well at Garmin and when he wasn't happy with the team. Phil simply does not have the form to win Liege. They will ride for Evans.

Pinotti is doing the Giro so I doubt he is up for selection. The final 4 that I would select would be Frank, Cummings, Hushovd and possibly Quinziato. I do agree in general with you.

Kind think Thor will miss the tour as well Poland Olympics Vuelta worlds

Yeah, those final two or three spots are tricky. Do they go for another climber or another guy who can ride on the front in the wind?

time to resurrect this thread   ;D

So if Phil wins LBL, Cadel has a reasonable Tour and Phil do ok at Worlds and/or Lombardia (or Cadel for those), Thor to win a stage at the Giro/Tour .... is it still a failure of a season?

That would have to be as good as they could have expected surely

your description - yes

phil wins LBL, Cadel WINS tour phil / Cadel WINS worlds then that would be a worth season
Thors season is already a failure and no stage wins will diminish that pain

i even question if he should go to tour. what does he offer Cadel?

Phil can do a bit of everything. He did climb quite well in the pyrenees in last years two but is also handy in other areas.

as optimistic as I am ( ;D)  even I am not necessarily saying they are going to win all those.

I think its pretty reasonable to suggest Cadel will go well at the Tour.  With luck (ie no crashes) he should podium at least.

I think its reasonable to think that Phil has a chance at LBL  -  hopefully he can win.

Reasonable to think that either Phil or Cadel can do well enough at the worlds and lombardia ... enough for at least one of them to podium each.

and if those things happened, I would consider it a reasonable season for the team.

If they were to actually win a few of those, I would be a happy camper  ;D

Sorry i meant the god of thunder. not sure it benefits BMC to take him to tour. leave him out and create space for another worker Bee

only real benefit he offers is as a back up plan should Cadel go AWOL / Crash. in that case they can try and salvage things with stage wins but that would be a pretty negative reason to take him

Taking Thor to the TdF is not a good move for BMC. If they are serious about Evans retaining it they need everyone to be concentrated on that. Thor wont be 100% focused on that as he will be looking for a similar tour to last year to save his season. Thor is not a team player as we saw at Garmin, IMO. Thor sulks too much and that is not good to have in a bus over 3 weeks.

Just a Tour victory by Evans would be enough to make BMC's year. Even if Gilbert fails all year (which I don't expect).

But there are other opportunities too. Thor could salvage his season by some GT stages, possibly the Olympics and there's some lesser one day races too (Paris-Tours springs to mind). Gilbert still has Liège to contend, but can also win the Olympics, Lombardia and/or the Worlds. Evans can win the Tour, Romandie, Dauphine, Worlds and/or Lombardia.

Plenty of possibilities, the season is stil young.

I am a big Thor fan ... but I tend to agree with you.  I dont think taking Thor to the Tour is a good move.  He will always be looking for something for him, rather than looking for how to help Cadel.

I thought Thor had a great TdF last year, but i didn't think he shared it with the team. The season is still young as SlowRider has said and a lot of big races still be raced.

Calling teams out over lack of wins at this stage is putting the cart before the horse. This type of thread should really start after the TdF when there is only 1 GT left, the worlds, the Oympics and Lombardia left that can save a teams season.

Those races in China are for the UCI to pocket money. IMO. If UCI was serious about China i think Li Fuyu would not have been popped for Clen, or he would've got off like all the other athlete's that competed in China who subsequently tested positive for Clen.
