The Brothers thread
« on: April 22, 2012, 20:27 »
There was a discussion during the LBL chatroom regarding the brothers in the pro peloton. Many ridersgot a pro contact in a top tier pro team because of their brothers.
On the other hand, other brothers have more comparable talent and got their pro contract based on their real talent.

You can name current or retired riders.

Some of the riders I can think of now.

Brothers with comparable talents :
Current
Frandy
Sylvain/Sébastien Chavanel
Peter/Martin Velits
Jesus/Jose Herrada
Cameron/Travis Meyer
Michel/Raymond Kreder
Brice/Romain Feillu
Gorka/Ion Izaguirre

Past
Xavier/Ricardo Otxoa
Igor/Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano
Damien/Jean-Patrick Nazon

Riders who got their pro contract because of their brother
Current
Juraj Sagan (Brother of Peter)

Past
Gorka Beloki (Brother of Joseba)
Nicolas Jalabert (Brother of Laurent)

Past;

Stephen Roche's brother Lawrence

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Roche

He was a professional from 1989 to 1991 where he rode for the Carrera Jeans-Vagabond for two years and then for Tonton tapis team for 1991 in which he rode the Tour de France for the only time in his career where he finished in the 153rd place. During that Tour, he raced on the same team as his famous brother Stephen Roche.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

On a domestic level the two Downing brothers in England. 3 years between them and been some fairly intense rivalry over the years.

Both former national champions
Russ - National Champ in 2005 (Dean came second in that year)
Dean - National Criterium Champ in 2005
Both have two wins in the Lincoln grand Prix (Dean coming second to Russ in 2005)

Between the two of them they have won pretty much everything domestically, but only Russ got the shot at the big time so to speak. Both rode as amateurs in France from 2000 as well.

Only rode together briefly though.

Scott & Allan Davis. Scott probably got his 2010 contract because of his brother.

Are the Velits the only twins?

We forgot about Vladimir and Alexander Efimkin Brothers. They are twins too. Alexander is still active with TT1-Sanofi whereas Vladimir took part of 2011 off to stay with his sick wife then got back to racing with TT1 for a short period and now seems to be retired.

Haimar & Joseba Zubeldia
No doubt who succeeded the most, but little brother Joseba did feature in the Euskaltel squad for six seasons (2002-2007) without anybody noticing, which is no mean feat. Haimar has turned out to be one of the most anonymous top riders of his generation, and his li'l bro might have picked up on that strategy, although he never became a world beater.

Piotr & Adam Wadecki
Piotr is the most renowned of the Polish Wadecki brothers, despite his pro career being relatively short (1998-2005). A good allrounder, Piotr Wadecki was at his best in shorter stage races and bumpy one day races, and his most impressive result was probably the 2nd place in Tour de Suisse 2002 won by Alex Zülle. He won the classic Eastern European stage race Course de la Paix and a stage in Paris-Nice amongst others.
Younger brother Adam is still active, but has ridden most of his career in Poland, why he's probably not raising many eyebrows in the international cycling scene. He's more a sprinter kinda guy, his biggest win to date is a stage of 4 Jours de Dunkerque 2005, beating Tomas Vaitkus and Fred Rodriguez.

Fascinating trivia, huh?  :)

I think we decided that Emanuel Kiserlovszki and Robert were brothers. They are born in the same town, so they certainly know each other.

Sylvain and sebastian are brothers. I thought they were unrelated.

Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

How far back in history are we going?

I know there were 3 french brothers in the 1920's and Henri Pelissier won the Tour in 1923 amongst other races. One of his brothers was called Francis. I'll look in my big cycling book for the name of the other brother tomorrow.
