Ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls... I present the second update of the sprinter's most interesting trophy... the "I'm so good I beat everyone except one, all the time" prize  :win. This prestigious award informally has such names as Tyler Farrar, Daniele Bennati and JJ Rojas to its names. Who will it be this year, the first "official" tally.

SAGAN        GOSS        FARRAR        RENSHAW

Sagan and Farrar both remain in the top of the standings from their earlier efforts.  Farrar has dropped off lately and Sagan is taking a rest, so these two should fall away from the standings.  In favour of the Aussies Goss and Renshaw, who stormed into leading positions of this category single handedly via the Presidential Tour of Turkey, where Goss in particular pulled off 4 2nd placings.  This is pure form leading into the Giro, where he should take more 2nd places to Cavendish.

So, as we know the sprinter's biggest loser is not so simple as most podiums but it is a factor.  These four have the highest number of podiums in leading company, but who is the BIGGEST LOSER of them all so far?!

Placegetters Giro Preview

The first clash of titans takes place in the Giro d'Italia. This is the season's first Grand Tour, but these guys will be riding like it's their second. Some of these riders here have more seconds than an hour, others you'd think were from the third world. Ram reports that the Giro has accommodated additional second placings in the sprints for our great sprinters this year. It has been reported elsewhere that Tyler Farrar and Matt Goss have undertaken height reduction surgery on their legs, to make sure that if they actually do beat Cavendish in one of the sprints, that they still appear shorter than him on the podium. Long-time loser Daniele Bennati has been very quiet this season because he tried out a career in acting but he was never able to take the stage. Mark Renshaw and Theo Bos will play violin with each other on the night before an expected bunch sprint, both of which insist to play second fiddle. Finally, Mark Cavendish, while a hungry little man at dinner time, rarely goes back for seconds.

Notable sprinting starters and their # podiums this year:
FARRAR Tyler, 4 - +1 then withdrew
GOSS Matthew Harley, 4 - +2 already
RENSHAW Mark, 3 - +1 then withdrew
KRISTOFF Alexander, 1 - +1
BOS Theo, 1
BENNATI Daniele, 1 - +1 then withdrew
CAVENDISH Mark, 0 - +1
GUARDINI Andrea, 0
MODOLO Sacha, 0
DEMARE Arnaud, 0
VENTOSO ALBERDI Francisco José, 0
CHICCHI Francesco, 0
NIZZOLO Giacomo, 0
HAEDO Juan José, 0 - +1
FEILLU Romain, 0
FERRARI Roberto, 0 - +1

Eight possible bunch sprints, therefore 16 points up for grabs. We can expect to see some serious movement in the table, and a clear leader of the 2012 placegetter sprinter competition should certainly emerge. Notably, it will mark the end of Sagan's run as leader since he is not riding. We can expect Farrar, Goss and Renshaw to rise like meringue in the oven. But which other riders will make their moves: Bos? Cavendish? Bennati? Guardini?

The likely sprint stages of the Giro:

stage 2 Sunday, May 6   206 km

Goss & Soupe

Stage 3 Monday, May 7   190 km

JJ Haedo & Farrar

stage 5  Thursday, May 10   199 km

Goss & Bennati

stage 6  Friday, May 11   207 km

Most definitely not a sprint stage.

stage 9    Monday, May 14   171 km

Crash affected bunch sprint.

stage 11 Wednesday, May 16   243 km

Not really a sprint, most sprinters were dropped.

stage 13 Friday, May 18   121 km

Kristoff & Renshaw.

stage 18 hursday, May 24   139 km

Cavendish & Ferrari.

we need this emoticon to have a 2 on the cup :win

I expect Tyler Farrar to jump out to an early lead in this classification at the Giro before pulling out at the same time as Cavendish to make sure he doesn't actually win anything.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Goss is a supreme athlete, he doesn't bother with first or third, just hammers that number two home. Relentless consistency two, last five sprints contested? Two two two two two.

Whatever happens for the rest of the season I think his work over the last two weeks shouldn't be forgotten.

We should name this the Goss award - and keep tabs over the years

we can even send a little something to the teams saying rider X won the most prestige cycling award the velorooms Goss award

This year Goss is the early leader, but in past years we had Farrar, Rojas and Bennati. It's Goss' first year of secondness. We would have to do a retroactive count of the past few years, because if Farrar or Bennati has won this competition two years running, then the award should be in their name! Or maybe there's another guy who really dominated the podiums before I started getting into cycling.

I can start working on a cheap trophy. Anyone got some ideas?

My first idea would be to show a finish line, the winner crossing the line not celebrating and the second place guy with his arms in the air like a champion.

  • Less interesting than he seems on paper
I guess I have been confused about this comp since its creation.

In my head, I thought we were always talking about the guy who podiums but DOESN'T win anything worthwhile - Thats why I had always considered Farrar as 'my boy' to win it.

Never even considered Goss because I always assumed he would win races and take himself out of the running.... Will have to reconsider now because if a win doesn't disqualify then obviously the most consistent runner up is going to be Goss...  Any sprint where Cav turns up (and stays upright) Goss will get 2nd and Farrar will get 3rd or worse...

Should incorporate wins into the equation. Someone who wins 5 and gets 10 places is at 66% whereas someone who wins twice but has 8 places is at 80%. Which one is more of a 'placegetter'? :D

Thanks Tuart and Martin for the suggestions. I will incorporate wins into the tally.
I've always seen the tally as a guide rather than a ranking/ladder/standings, because of the reasons you give.

It's hard to say now who stands out, but I think all the talk about Goss is that he's come second in every single one of his 6 podiums for one win. That's a horrible strike rate! What if he gets over 15 podiums in a year!? If his # wins is less than 3 you would have to say it would have been a pretty placegetter year for him. But if both him and Tyler get about 10 and Tyler doesn't pick up a win, then he has to be the winner of this competition.

The point is it's relative. And i think that's good because we can make our own opinions about who the biggest loser is and have good discussions about it.

Anyway... For some fun...
  • In 2010, FARRAR Tyler's best season scored 12 podiums in these races
  • In 2009, FARRAR Tyler had 13 (his 2nd best season)
  • In 2007, BENNATI Daniele had 9 in his best season
  • Last year, Rojas' best season he had 8 podiums

Tour of California has been fascinating: Sagan has finally been winning some bunch sprints, so he's pushing himself out of contention for this title.
But we've had another run of consecutive second placings from an Australian...

welcome to the competition, Mr. Heinrich Haussler!

Haussler obviously annoyed at being upstaged by his squad-mate Tyler Farrar and wanted to prove that he is still one of the best nearly-men in the peloton.

It's clearly also a push for Olympics selection as nearly-wins tend to be exactly what the Australian national team look for (except Cadel).
