Tour of Gippsland 2012, 1-5 August
« on: July 27, 2012, 17:21 »
Back, finally, and bigger than before.

Gippsland plays host to the first race of the Scody cup series, and the fourth in the NRS- The eighth edition of the Tour of Gippsland, starting on the 1st of August. What could well be considered a home race for our resident Victorian Genesys pro, Jono Lovelock, it has been described by him as a race with decent prize money. So kudos to the organisers, though I can imagine a vociferous student or two protesting on all the stages ;D

Happy days in 2011

The race itself is nine stages long over five days, and follows a crit in the morning and road race in the afternoon format.

Of the Gippsland lot, Warragul to be a bit more precise, Brenton Jones is in a bullish mood and saying the crit followed by the RR structure should suit him. Would be grouse to see him do well after his struggles over the past year. His target's a win in any of the nine stages of the tour. Good luck to him, and he'll have some crazy opposition in there with Giacoppo and the Roos looked ace in Toowoomba. Also be hella grouse to see the National champion's colours in the morning crits, even if it's only in the photographs.

More happy days, this time it's Brad Linfield winning stage 4

Does carbon tax apply to sponsorship too?

Maybe someone can help me with profiles, but here's what I have found with regards to the stage info

Harrif Salleh winning ahead of Ricco Rogers and Ben Grenda as Pat Shaw wins in 2010

Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit eh? Did Troy Bayliss get an invite to flag off the race? How flipping brilliant would that be? Far better than a flag being waved from a car by Mr.Random. But will they invite a New South Welshman for the honours even if possible? Dampener.

Not half bad at all

I did read some criticism of the organisers in the previous year's tour regarding the lack of barricades just prior to the finish at Metung. Hope that's sorted out.

My sentiments too. Looks nice down there. Can you explain for us non-Ozzer affiliated readers what this business with the hypothetical protesting students would be about?

no Racing Kanga's it seems and no GPM wilson either

but in we have Drapac and Pure Black

typically CN have a start list for this race but no mention of 2 2.2 races in Europe.

Profiles are here, do not think i can copy images here
http://cyclingprofiles.com.au/HTM/CA/CA_NRS2012TGS1.htm

got quite a lot of info including break down on each of the climbs
Stage 6 looks to the one that would interest Jono

The sponsor is lakes oil, and there were a few interruptions at the north western tour regarding santos' sponsorship from a green student.

Budget forklifts manager's saying that Mark O'Brien's not a favourite for the event as it's too sprinty and critty. Giacoppo has to be the big un then. And how about Rico Rogers? Not the worst sprinter around, though I suspect he'll crash out in one of the stages.

flipity, Drapac in there, and even PBR have a good bunch of sprinters. Scratch all them predictions now. Crazy strong field for a NRS event.

due to dodgy internet and dodgy head not had a chance to look at the course that closely. there was a couple of climby stages from memory but guess it comes down to the time bonuses on the crit stages. in some of these Aussie races they give time bonus on line, plus time bonus on course meaning sprinters can build up massive leads

Haas' take on it and Moobrien's objectives here-
http://cyclingcafe.com.au/mark-obrien-hopes-to-help-budget-forklifts-to-nrs-four-peat/

Quote
“You really learn to fight for position in Australian racing with so many crits and fast finishes,” Haas said.

“Having done a tour like Gippsland, your skills are on par with what’s required at the world tour level.

“Australian racing may not be as fast, but it’s as competitive and that’s what makes it such a good breeding ground for good riders.”

The cyclist described the Tour of Gippsland as one of the most challenging courses in the NRS.

“The teams are really starting to hit form at this point in the year, so if you’re not up to scratch on such demanding road courses and super-fast crits, you will be having a very hard week,” he said.

“The course itself suits a rider who can climb but still has the ability to compete for intermediate sprints.

“It’s a perfect mix between a really tough terrain and really fits teams, which makes this race such a tough one to win.”

New South Welshman winning the first stage of the race.

Seeing Rhys Pollock in there. Sweet, remember his Tour of Taiwan pretty well. And I still think Wong Kam Po was better there ;D Wowzers, still a bit shocking to see Drapac racing this year.

They're well entrenched in the European and Asian Continental scene. Their aim this year was to be successful in those continental tours, and I'm thinking they'll race here in this break period and head off again later on.

Edit-
Seems like Adam Phelan is riding in the U23 Worlds selections and Rusli is in the Olympics.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.
