Vuelta a España 2012 - Squad Discussion
« on: July 14, 2012, 00:23 »
Is this too premature?  I know the Tour is still happening but my mind is turning to thoughts of who will try their luck in Spain.

Here's the scant info I've gleaned thus far (it needs a lot of work, this I know).

Astana: Kreuziger likely?
Katusha:  Rodriguez, Moreno
Liquigas: No Basso (unsurprisingly) as he's going to Blackpool  :D
Movistar: Cobo to defend.
Rabobank: Gesink, Kruiswijk
Radioshack: Fuglsang not permitted, Frank doesn't want to. Andy Schleck might if his pelvis feels better.
Saxo Bank: Contador, Navarro.
Vacansoleil: newly-wed Thomas de Gendt

Many things to consider: Who'll be calling it a day on the season after the Tour/Olympics, who'll be going the Tour of Britain instead as Worlds prep, who has had a bit of failed Tour & is looking for some GC self-esteem?
If I'm too keen, I apologise  :)

Add Mollema to the list, short steep climbs, his forte. He wants revenge for the injuries at the Tour ;)

The last two winners of the worlds, both raced at the Tour of Britain, so expect all the big guns to go there, which will deplete the field of the Vuelta, and frankly leave it as a bit of a side show to the main event. :D

Teams that are going so far, Liquigas, Garmin, Sky and its been confirmed as Brassyn said that Basso will be riding the ToB. There was a bit of a rumour going around in the spring that BMC and a certain mr Gilbert may also be going. Think there will be a few riders that see ToB as good prep.

The situation at Radioshack just makes me mad at the system.

Frank has no reason to go, why race 3 useless GT's when you can stop at 2. Andy, while I hope he is competitive, seems too injured to pose a threat. Horner is 86 years old, and Kloden gets "blocked" in the mountains all the time.

Fuglsang under any other circumstances would be the out and out leader, but the system is built where he might have to settle for the ToB (not that there's anything wrong with that Dim  ;D).

So maybe Zubeldia might be plan A. Who knows, he could pull off the historic double - back-to-back 7th places that no one cares about.

Also interested to see if Garmin let Talanksy and Le Mevel loose. Danielson will be in Colorado I would imagine, and I'd guess Ryder will settle for his Giro win (poor guy  :P) and go for the Canadian races.

Hoping Igor Anton will have a better Vuelta than last year, better watch what he eats this time.

Also, J-Rod said that he's not going for the overall, just stage hunting, so Katusha is probably without a GC man again (even couple days ago I was still hoping Denis would go on and do Vuelta, but now I'm just thinking - why even bother)

Astana - Kreuziger? Kesiakoff?

Also, surely Moncoutie will ride the Vuelta one more time.

De La Fuente to ride for Caja - go for mountains jersey maybe?

Anyway, I don't think Andy's ass will heel in time for him to gain any sort of form, so it's gonna be Alberto show in Spain

I would imagine Westra for Vaconsoleil but I have not had anything confirmed

Moncoutie has said he will race if he has recovered.

Also Euskalter and Igor Anton are surely confirmed and from I heard after Samu's crash he is also confirmed, but I am not so sure what is happening atm in terms of his injury.

Chris Froome stated post-Tour today that the Vuelta was likely for him so I guess he's Sky's GC man, Uran in support?

From BBC:

Quote

Two of the first four finishers in the Tour de France, Britain's Chris Froome and Belgium's Jurgen Van den Broeck, are to ride in the forthcoming Tour of Spain.

Froome, second behind Bradley Wiggins, and Van den Broeck, fourth in the final overall classification, will be up against the Tour's major absentee, Spain's Alberto Contador, as he returns from suspension.

Froome was obvious but not VDB2

Seems like Nicholas Roche will also be riding.

Kreuziger, Gavazzi and Kessiakoff. I would make the first 2 definites from what I have read with Kessiakoff being very likely.

Uran also has confirmed his intentions to ride there alongside Froome, whilst Nordhaug and Henao should also be riding to the best of my knowledge

Degenkolb also as he missed the Tour should be a certainty and I would suspect similarly Kittel. De Kort, Geschke and Geniez are confirmed for AS which interesting as Geniez is surely leaving next season and AS need the points if they want to have a realistic chance of WT so chapeau to them for discarding all the WT rubbish unlike RANT.

Whilst Navarro will be supporting Contador as a definite even though that team can be guessed mostly looking at Contador Giro team, according to Laf (a very reliable Contador tout) Noval and Hernandez will also be racing. Michael Morkov also I believe wants to race as well and he would be a strong addition on the flats if added.

For the Vaconsoleil faliures I dont think Poels will make it but Ruijgh will.
Dont know about Westra but Romain Feillu and De Gendt who missed the Tour will be riding it seems.

And the Rabo failures all 3 of them Gesink, Mollema and Kruisjiwik will be riding in all likelihood as they seek to prepare for their home worlds, Boom is also going for Rabo so he wont be defending his TOB title.

And Cobo of course will be riding and it seems Ventoso as Spanish national champ will certainly be riding, I dont know about Valverde he has not made any comments after the Tour as far as I know backing up his half hearted assertion pre Tour. Indeed it seems as if these 5 are also confirmed whilst Valverde and a couple of others will vie for the last 2 spots: Beñat Intxausti, Pablo Lastras, Jonathan Castroviejo , Javi Moreno, Nairo Quintana

Purito will be aided as is typical by Moreno

Whilst Pinot has expressed his desire to ride and he will probably ride alongside the hugely promising, French champ and in form Nacer Bouhanni who was not picked for the Tour.

Also Philbert will be racing to make up for his season but he may just be using as preparation for the worlds as he desperately tries to regain any semblance of past form, if Thor Hushovd has recovered from his problems then he may also be racing.

Euskaltel will have Anton certainly and most likely Samu if he has recovered sufficiently by then.

Cunego after having escaped the clutches of Mantova will also be building up for a worlds/Lombardia push.

Cappechi will lead Liquigas apparently

Whilst Vanendert should be going to the Vuelta but after BBC (not all that knowledgeable about cycling) claimed VBD2 is riding the dynamics there will be interesting, Vanendert may come in better form but we will have to wait and see. Lotto also now seem to be taking Joost Van Leijen as well who has been in some promising form.

And Terpstra after deciding to miss the Tour will be lining up along with the hugely talented Zydenek Stybar for his GT debut.

Andy, Machado, Bakelants, Posthuma, Monfort with and the impressive Zubeldia will most likely feature for RANT if they have not capitulated by then. Of those Andy will most likely pull out though expect Monfort to go strong as he did last year so a top 10 may be possible for him and of course concerning the new Zubeldia anything is possible, also watch out for Bakelants in breaks.

Caja Rujal have released a 13 rider long list for the race as have Vaconsoleil and they have both been posted below.

Quite a few Tour riders in there it seems so it will be interesting how they go after a Tour which was not all that hard.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Euskaltel-Euskadi: 12 names for the Vuelta

Igor Anton will be the sole leader of Euskaltel-Euskadi in the Tour of Spain and Gorka Gerrikagotia already have well-defined block accompanying the orange climber from August 18 in Pamplona.

The head of the Basque team manages a list of 12 names: Anton more Mikel Astarloza, Pierre Cazaux, Mikel Landa, Miguel Minguez, Juanjo Oroz, Alan Perez, Ruben Perez, Romain Sicard, Amets Txurruka, Ivan Velasco and Gorka Verdugo.

Ruben Perez, Astarloza, Txurruka and Verdugo played the Tour de France, but only the first one ended as soon abandon the rest as a result of falls. Txurruka also participated and completed the Giro d'Italia. Oroz, Velasco, Cazaux Minguez and also ran the Giro. To Anton, Landa, Alan Perez and Sicard, however, would be the first round in stages of the season.

They will not be heading into the Tour Samuel Sanchez, who is still recovering and taking into Lombardy World highs and objectives; Mikel Snow, which will focus on the classic WorldTour in Canada, Piedmont, Lombardy and the Tour of Beijing; and Egoi Martinez after his brilliant Tour who will not bend with the Spanish race, which had been repeated since 2005.
