Argos Oil-Shimano a.k.a. "1t4i"
« on: March 30, 2012, 10:44 »

WHY YOU ASK?

They announced today that their main sponsor is an oil company.

Aren't they forgetting something?

September 28/9 2011 Press Release (while still Skil Shimano)
“Project 1t4i will execute its operation CO2-neutral,” says the team statement. “Moreover, the team functions as ambassador of the non-profit organization “Trees for Travel”, that applies itself to the maintenance of the environment by means of CO2-emission reduction and compensation.”

Not a great jersey and shorts is it?

Who the fuqc designs these things?

Do none of them watch cycling coverage and know how hard it is to pick out teams and riders?????

I dont have an issue with them being sponsored by an oil company.

But - it does seem incredibly hypocritical considering their statements ....

One thing that could have rescued the shorts was if the 1t4i circle was drawn along their crotches too, if not for anything else, at least for the comedy value.

As for the fake commitments? Isn't it the norm for many oil companies? You'd think Chevron was a charity fund after seeing their ads.

Awful name, awful kit!

Wait Chevron isn't a charity fund?  :o

Phew, I thought I was the only one they had duped. It took me years to find out that Chevron wasn't a charity organisation, that too only after I was smacked silly for a whole day.

Yay, a cycling team has found a pretty big sponsor that is willing to invest in the sport for multiple years! Sure the kit is a missed opportunity and I do agree that an oil company supporting a carbon-neutral team seems a bit weird, but I'm just happy to see one of the most interesting teams in the sport have a sponsor for the next 3 years.

Nah Shell have been advertising in Nat Geographic Mag for years and years about their green intentions, made a mockery of NatGeo and their so called ideology. But it is the USA and $$$$s talk they just find a way to justify it afterwards. No doubt this will be the same.

yep - agree with ideology or not - in terms of sport sponsorhip its a good one.  Oil co's have deep pockets, wont notice a few mil here and there, and need the good publicity so its likely to be a longer term thing  ....

So we have Argos oil to go along with Liquigas now in the peloton..  I thought oil companies were about huge profits, contributing to global warming and the spilling of toxic sh$t everywhere -  not the backing of bike races teams.      Hmmm slightly odd.

Actually Total are the new leakygas  if you think about it.   :-X

Also it is a very good PR strategy from the oil company, especially if they combine it with an advertisement campaign concerning their "environmentally friendly oil"  ;) ;)
But it is really a good sign for the future of the team, since it is probably a long term strategy of Argos, which might help the team grow in the sense of budget with coming years

When does the sponsorship start? they were not wearing their new kit today at the Volta Limburg! Maybe they had a rethink about the design, well hopefully.

Surely they will be wearing them at Flanders.

Correct.
Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Disappointed with the kit but at least Argos is a name I can remember and it's better than calling them the Project Team. I actually like the green colour they use and it would stand out in the peloton more if it were more green and less white. Anyway, good for Argos; now I'll remember their name and associate it with cycling which is probably what they want.

Some of the hysteria about the sponsor simply baffles me. They are investing in cycling. You should be happy. Some people always need something to complain about.

I dont see any hysteria .... just amusing that they are so far from what they stated as a core value.
