Gone is the iconic climb of the Muur Van Geraardsbergen and also gone is the Bosberg. Instead, there are three laps of Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg with differences on each lap. The total race drops slightly to 254km

Very excited about this new edition. Three times up the Kwaremont is truly evil race planning.  ;D

Also interested to see how much more important the Koppenberg will be this year, where it's late enough in the race to force a proper selection.

    Yep.

My wife and I splurged for VIP tickets at the top of the Kwaremont.... I am pretty excited about it.

Like so many others, I am a bit sad about the situation with the Muur... But I am very willing to give the new parcours a chance.

I think the racing will be very fresh and different. :)

I think it is a good sign that they are prepared to accept it they've got it wrong with the redesign, see this report, and if it doesnt work change it back after a couple of years, and if it does work they will keep it for 6 years and then look to do something different again.

Not sure, as they suggest, it is the 'model' for one day races but I think it is a good model for RvV.

I think they should have saved Koppenberg for the final loop, 30-40km to go.

Personally I cant say if it's a better or worse route, the final Hotond-Oude-Paterberg should help to break groups apart, but the 12km of flat at the end could disappoint.

Where's the VIP area, Scott? Curious to know what they're doing over there.

Kwaremont is a lovely village for those who don't know it already. The rest of the year, it's best known as an charming artists' community where a number of Belgium's most renowned painters and sculptors live and work. It's light and airy in summer on the top of the plateau between Oudenaarde and Ronse and you can see considerable distances. Great countryside to hike through too.

This first photo is just at the top of the climb, although the cobbles continue for about another 1km.

It's at the very end of the false flat after the Kwaremont climb.  Right before the riders make the left on the paved road/highway.

Yeah, we kept upgrading our tickets until now we will be inside the tent, waiter service, gourmet food (not the BBQ option) and of course all the beer we can drink.

There are six of us going....  Not sure how we are going to get back to Bruges ;D

Last year we were in the tent with the Quickstep guys.  You should have seen their meltdown when Nyuens punk'd Chavenal.... priceless.

6 of you? You should have got the private car that follows the race? Only 4500 Euros! ;D

I am so freaking jealous! I can't think of a better way to watch the race. Place to eat, drink, sit, big TV. Key part of the race, passes 3 times.....what a blast

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

    which package is that?

and which one did you do last year?

are you close enough to the action to take photographs?

last, but not least, how soon do these tickets sell out?

i would love love love to do something like this to get my boyfriend a little excited about cycling so he doesn't rag me about it as much. (even better if i can get him on a bike!) alas, i have to visit both sets of parents in SoCal and Hawaii and it just might be around this time, sigh...

oh, and if you get to Ghent, give a holler  ;D

    The VIP Walking Dinner.  http://www.rondevanvlaanderen.be/en/elite-men/vip/18/3x-oude-kwaremont-vip-walking-dinner

I don't remember which package we did last year.  The tent was in Geraardsbergen about 300 meters before the riders make the right turn and go up the Muur.  It was fun stuff.

You are right on the course, so there are opportunities for picture taking.

The tickets definitely sell out, although this year they are expecting a few thousand in the VIP BBQ area.  I am not sure they will sell out there.

I will be in Ghent at some point the week after the Ronde.  Plenty of cool bars in Ghent but there is one that is known as the smallest bar in Ghent... I can' remember the name of it.  Maybe you know it.  Anyways, I will have a few beers there for sure.

    Team NettApp granted last wildcard

    http://www.rondevanvlaanderen.be/en/elite-men/news/2012-02/74/team-netapp-granted-a-wildcard-for-the-tour-of-flanders

NetApp getting A LOT of importants wildcards for very important races... The managment has been doing an amazing job lobbying all the race organizers, also maybe, giving some "gift" here and there and over there... I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one surprised a lot for the invites that they are getting...
Maybe I'm wrong and the race organizers are just trying to promote the cycling in germany again... but I think if they are trying to do that they are losing their times...

I'd dare to say that half of the team wont finish and the best clasified will after the 40th position...

does anyone know what time roads close normally for Flanders. tough to get out there saturday and sunday might be best option with flight arriving in Brussels before 9 before a drive out west.

    any suggestions please?

It varies depending on the location, but if you're coming in from Brussels, the bigger problem is the incidental traffic and rolling roadblocks. Since the main bit of the parcours is concentrated on a particular part of Flanders, it can get very difficult to move around.

You need at least 90 minutes in hand (of course you need a lot more than that if you're intending to see it at a popular spot - see pic above for example) and you need to approach from a direction not passed by the race earlier in the day (this is precisely what ruined the 2011 OHN for me) which can be more difficult than you'd think. Brinksmanship when driving in Flanders is best left to the locals. :)

We will be doing it with staying guests (our places are still free at the moment) and it will be an early start that morning!  8)
