Tour of Toowoomba 14-17 June
« on: June 01, 2012, 12:18 »
The National Road Series, and the riders, embark upon the third edition of the Tour of Toowoomba takes place from the 14th to the 17th of June.  It's now time to whet the appetite with grouseness in this race that climbs to 1000metres.

Toowoomba is known as the garden city, didn't know they had gardens in Queensland (learn something new everyday), and is 127km west of the state's capital Brisbane. The temperature should be happy in the mid teens, unless Victoria has shipped off its terrible weather up north.

There's a toss up for all riders, climbers, hill men, sprinters, TTT folk, but not the individual time trialists.

Stage 1

Official description-
Date: Thursday 14 June 2012
Location: 11am Start Bull and Barley Inn, Cambooya to Cambooya.

125 km Road Race in the Cambooya/Clifton area of the Darling Downs. On rural roads passing through several areas of undulation. Can be buffeted by strong South Westerly winds.

Stage 2

Grouseness all round

Date: Friday 15 June 2012
Location:  11am Start. Highfields Shopping Village, Hilltop finish 2.15pm approx. at Mount Mowbullan TV Towers, Bunya Mountains.

126 km Road Race. Sponsored by Highfields Shopping Village. This will be a day for the climbers culminating in a hill top finish that will be talked about for years to come.

Stage 3

Date: Saturday 16 June 2012
Location: 9.30am Start, Kingsthorpe Village Green –

9.50am approx finish (first team), Community Cultural Centre, McDonald Street, Oakey.

New Hope Group 12 km Team Time Trial (ordinary road bikes). This will be held in the Kingsthorpe/Oakey region on a good quality rural road.

Stage 4

Date: Saturday 16 June 2012 (your eyes aren't tricking you, it is 2 stages in a day)
Location: 1.30pm Start McDonald Street, Oakey.
Oakey – Mount Tyson – Finish 3.45pm approx. at Toowoomba Criterium Circuit, Harvey Road.

New Hope Group Road Race of 100 km in the Oakey/Mt Tyson area of the Darling Downs. This stage will finish on the new $3 million Criterium Circuit – developed jointly by the Queensland Government, Toowoomba Regional Council and the Royal Queensland Agricultural Society.

Stage 5

Date: Sunday 17 June 2012
Location: 1.15pm approx, Lindsay Street (Queens Park), Toowoomba.
Finish time 2.15pm approx.

Capilano Honey Shotz 50km Criterium around Toowoomba’s picturesque Queens Park. This Stage will bring the 2012 FKG Tour of Toowoomba to a close.

Presentations to the Stage winner, Jersey winners and Overall winner of the 2012 FKG Tour of Toowoomba will follow. Please note that all listed times are subject to change without further notice.

Street References: Lindsay, Campbell, Hume and Margaret Streets. Approximately 2.4 km per lap.

No, ram. You have been living in a dream world for too long now. I read all of your reports on strange, exotic races so far and it seems you're slowly descending into madness, photoshopping absurd leader's jerseys, inventing cyclists, even talking about imaginary "race sponsors". I feel you need a wake-up call. There is no bike race called the Tour of Toowoomba. It just doesn't exist.

I did a google search, just in case. Don't dash the hopes of a lonely man, all I can do is imagine, it's relief. There's nothing left for me in this large and empty world.

Anyway, Jono reports should be good for this race. Question is- Shaw or Jono? Real names, so real that they post here :D

Fair to say that the leader's strip clashes a bit with the Genesys strip.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Genesys is just an embarrassment of riches. Twice and defending champion Pat Shaw, who was in good form in Kumano.
Nearle, very good in the Asian swing, and showing good form in the climbs.
Giacoppo, should be at the pointy end of most sprints
Jono, struggled in the crowded laps, but had a top result in Borneo
Jai, second to Oscar Pujol in Singkarak is no mean feat
Flakemore will be decent for the Time trial.

So, who'll be their leader? Or will it be Nippo of the Japanese races?

For the other teams, Jayco honey Shots looks an impressive U23 team
Mitch Fay Lovelock, Australia regular
Jordan Kerby, had that stage at the Tour of Azerbaijan where he just got caught out in the final metres
Bissacker, the grated arse rider. Kudos to him, so many could learn from him.
And Dave Edwards was the best placed Australian in the GC in Azerbaijan.

Budget Forklifts will always do well

Like Phil Mundy as a rider as well

not sure who GPM Wilson are but they seem to have a strong team Caleb Jones, Al Louit and Sam Rutherford.

outside of that Plan B will do well, Pure Tasmania and Suzuki normally feature at the pointy end of the race.

Then there's Plan B, a mix of experienced (the polite term for ancient) and young
Brad Hall, decent season last year with a second in the Tour of Thailand.
Yates had a decent run in the tracks last year with a couple of bronze medals in the Nationals.
Mawby is the U17 Road race champion, very young, so will be nice to see his progress

I think the teams musical chair a bit with the riders, especially when it comes to extra racing but I guess that's a good thing if all the teams are close and helping out riders get experience.

Not much said really, it's pretty obvious that they're crazy strong for this race.

And one about the debutants, the Racing Kangaroos

All still together at second sprint Joseph Lewis (RBS Morgans) takes the win. Maybe now the early sprints are done the field will let someone get away. the climbs are mainly towards end of stage so expecting most of the fireworks then

Ben Hill has been a late inclusion for RBS Morgans team

And he won the fist KOM climb  2nd- Jesse Kerrison (Velocisports) 3rd- Tom Hamilton(Jayco)

He also won the second climb beating  Jack McCulloch (Suzuki/Trek) and Cameron Bayley (Search2Retain)

And immediately after that Andrew Crawley, in no way related to the sh*t John Crawley, is off on a break and is joined by three others.
