Flag carriers.
« on: July 22, 2012, 15:30 »
Who will they be for each country (or have they already been announced). Not the biggest question going into the olympics but it certainly a position of honour and most importantly, will there be any cyclists doing the flag carrying.
Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Summer_Olympics_national_flag_bearers

Not a complete list, by the way.

Notables (to me at least):

Novak Djokovic - Serbia
Maria Sharapova - Russia
Agnieszka Radwańska - Poland
Marcos Baghdatis - Cyprus
CYCLIST Adrien Niyonshuti (MTN Qhubeka) - Rwanda
Pau Gasol - Spain (replaced Nadal)
David Rudisha - Kenya
CYCLIST Evelyn García - El Salvador

Very interested to see who carries the American flag...

Radwanska for Poland. What a rip. She never won an olympic medal. these girls in tennis get payed through the roof and have a million times as much fame as any other female athlete can ever dream to have (lest she shakes her ..... and .... a bit). And even for that 1 moment every leap year cycle where the other athletes are supposed to get their 15 minutes in the spotlight, the person who gets 16 chances in the same period is favored.

Thank god that Polish formula 1 driver cant get it on the basis that driving cars of varied abilities is not yet classified as an olympic sport.

are we guessing, or is this just for info?

For Australia I am guessing Andrew Hoy (equestrian) who is participating in his 7th Olympics

The number of tennis players carrying the flag is amazing.

Columbia has a cyclist - Mariana Pajon - BMX world champion
El Salvador - Evelyn Garcia who has been to the last two olympics and competed in the RR and 3000m individual pursuit.

Andrew Hoy carried the flag in 1996 so I doubt he will do it twice, although it has been carried by the same person before, 1952 and 1956.

Drew Ginn might be a chance but whether they will give it to another rower after James Tomkins did it last time. Drew Ginn is a cyclist although as a minor sideline to his rowing.

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Thought the flame lighter discussion could be in the same thread.
It seems like he has a fairly decent idea of who it will be and it seems as if it will be a surprise as well, imo it should be Seb Coe but I dont think it will be.

Geo restricted but something like that (an archer shooting a flaming arrow into cauldron thing) would be a great spectacle.

Also I will be going to see the torch relay tomorrow even though I have derided it seeing I have holidays it doesnt seem to bad an idea.

Agreed.  For a sport that imho shouldn't  be in the Olympics, it seems a bit odd. Oh well...

For me, the flame should be lit by Steve Redgrave - 5 golds in 5 different games says it all really, and sets him apart from any other GB Olympian.

'Sacrifice and hard work is our only secret' - Alberto Contador
'Vinokourov...a lord of cycling' - Andrea Guardini
'As world champion you wear the most beautiful jersey ever for a year. The rainbow stripes have something magical. All great champions have worn them' - Mark Cavendish

Redgrave doesnt fancy his own chances.

Nope it is in fact
Fencer Mariel Zagunis, dont ask.. :P

But apparently she is 27-years-old and won gold medals in the individual sabre at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 a bit underwhelming when the possible material is considered.

Adrien Niyonshuti, Rwanda. Fitting. He'll be riding the MTB for Rwanda
And if you're unaware of him (sacrilege), there's more about him in a couple of posts here-

Interesting to see that Kenyans chose Jason Dunford as their flag bearer. Interesting for 2 reasons. First of all because they have so much class, so many world champions and olympic champions.

Second of all because he is white. Im not really sure what the racial relations are like in Kenya, but caucasians make up about a tenth of a percent of the Kenyan population so for him to be selected as the flag bearer strikes me as a sign of harmony.
