Great Olympic Moments
« on: July 25, 2012, 14:52 »
A thread for those memorable moments one will never forget.

Eric Moussambani from Equatorial Guinea wins the hearts of the Sydney crowd in the heats of the 100m freestyle.

The swimmer gained entry to the Olympics without meeting the minimum qualification requirements via a wildcard draw designed to encourage developing countries.

After the other two swimmers false-started, Moussambani won his heat in one minute 52.72 seconds - outside the 200 metre world record.

My first real memory of the Games, and still by far the strongest memory despite all athletic feats. I tear up nearly every time.

Indeed that one is on the Geo restricted clip and sends me into shivers every time I see it, what sport should be all about.

Carrying both the hopes of a nation and her people, very special.

For me, was even better than his 100m record, as it clearly meant so much to him and he wanted it so much - actually running all the way to the line!

Put a link in originally on the first post but not one which came up, I would suggest clicking on the link because the story is pretty inspiring.

Remember watching that live at about 3 in the  morning and being amazed.  What a race - Sullivan setting thr wr on the first leg for the Aussies, Bernard odds on to bring it home for the French and the tightening up, Leszak's anchor leg - 46.06 split  :o

Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

We have a winner

I do understand the hype ones, where 1 guy/gal in athletics wins with relative ease, then cries or celebrates or whatever, i do,  but bolt freeman, johnson, the rest, they cant compare to a pure down to the wire fight like this.

France doing to the USA exactly what the US did to them in Beijing in the 4x100.  Agnel swam an absolute monster of a last leg, exactly like Lezak 4 years ago, to overhaul Lochte.  Great to watch  :)

Won't necessarily go down as an all time classic, but think this clip encapsulates the pain and effort that goes into winning a medal, plus how much it means to competitors:

Did you see when he said he was "sore" and the interviewer for some reason thought he said he was sorry, and started giving a lecture that he has nothing to be sorry about, and he didnt even have the energy to correct him so just sat through the lecture.

This race is full of dodgy Soviet bloc runners and the big rivals Coe and Ovett.
Steve Ovett owning the golden boy Sebastian Coe.   :win

What happened to Ovett. They keep talking to Coe and intervewing him and reminding everyone of Moscow 1980, and even claimed that the rivalry "divided a nation".

Surely with the whole story about how they were rivals he would be in great demand.

Does he won't nothing to do with olympics?

he was told to stay away from the hurdles beforehand, so they kind of prompted it  ;D
