Ok, here are the last of my stage previews... its getting pretty tricky to figure out how a stage might be ridden when you don't know what the circumstances are leading into the stage.

**** Wednesday 18 July Stage 16 High Mountains 197km

If you looked at Cadel’s Tour calendar this stage would have a big red circle around it.  While if Cadel was designing a stage to get the stage win this would not be it, however if he was designing one to beat Wiggins in the Tour this could well be it.  A number of very steep climbs (rather than long steady climbs) with tricky descents with the finish line at the bottom of the last one.  The Tourmalet is one of the more iconic climbs, and is the highest point (the roof) of this years Tour.  While it is usually at the end of the stage rather than the middle (which may mean they have climbed it before the TV coverage starts), it could work to put Wiggins under a lot of pressure.  If Cadel can get in a select group of climbers and drop Wiggins by the final climb he has the potential to gain a large amount of time.  If he does it before the Aspin (which is unlikely but possible) this stage could win him the Tour.  And if it is raining…

**** Thursday 19 July Stage 17 High Mountains 143km MTF

This is the last chance for the climbers, and the final summit finish.  It is also a very short stage which can lead to more attacking riding.  The bold riders will try to attack on the Port de Bales to maximise time gains.  With no flat terrain after it, if the rider(s) are strong enough it could be a successful move.  While I don’t think it will be enough to overcome the time lost to the likes of Wiggins and Cadel (unless they have a bad day) it could certainly move someone up into the top five or even on the podium.  It is hard to tell how aggressive Cadel will be here without knowing how the previous 18 stages went.  Of course he will be looking to gain time, but depending on how desperately he feel he needs time, he may just try and ride tempo up Port de Bales and hope that’s enough to drop Wiggins, if not he will portably try something at the short decent before the final climb to the finish.

* Friday 20 July Stage 18 Flat 222km

This stage will be interesting as it could go a number of ways and a lot of different riders will fancy their chances for the stage win here.  Officially it is listed as a flat stage, but it has 4 categorized climbs, so it is anything but a straight forward sprint stage.  If the peloton is looking for an easier day (which is unlikely because it will be the last chance for teams or riders that have not had success), I think Cadel should squeeze every last bit of energy out of his team (and call in any favours he might have from other teams) to set the pace as high as possible, the last thing he wants is for Wiggins to have an easy day before the final TT.  If Goss is still in the hunt for Green than GreenEdge will take control, and try to keep it together, if not, they have a few options for a break away win in Gerrans or Albasini.

**** Saturday 21 July Stage 19 ITT 53km

This is it!  Coming into today the picture will be very clear.  Every rider will know what they have to do to succeed.  It is a very long distance, the first 2/3 are very straight forward and very fast with a lot of long straights playing into the hands of the powerful and smooth TT guys like Cancalara, Martin and Wiggins, the last 1/3 is a bit more technical perhaps helping Cadel minimise any losses.  This is a similar to the TT in the last race where Wiggins nearly caught Cadel who stared 2mins ahead of Wiggins.  However, that was stage 4 of a 7 stage race; this is stage 19 so fatigue will play a big part.  Cadel was not in peak form in that race (of course Wiggins may not have been either), and we saw last year that Cadel dramatically improved his time on the same course from June to July when the specialists went backwards slightly.

* Sunday 20 July Stage 20 Flat 120km

While the GC will have been decided the stage before and for those riders this stage is simply a formality, it is anything but for the sprinters.  The Green jersey may still be up for grabs, but even if it is not, this is the most prestigious stage for a sprinter to win, so there will be plenty of motivation.  Cav has won this for the last 3 years, so if he is there he is the favourite, if he is not, it could be very open.  The first part of the stage is ridden at a very relaxed pace, but once the team with the Yellow jersey lead the peloton into the Champs-Elysees for the first of eight leps, the pace will be flat out (probably about 60km/h).  Guys will try to go off the front but they will have little chance of succeeding and they will get swallowed up as they dash for the line.

The End

very well written

you should take all your stages together and put them into a tdf preview thread.
Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

I would, however, Froom19 has already done one, which is better, with a lot more detailed (and well rounded) than mine.

9 North Americans for the tour - because Canada is not a country but North America is ( after Ryder won the Giro ) apparently  :fp

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

Quote
Cadel Evans and Bradley Wiggins appear as the favorites in all the pools to win the final victory in Paris. The experience and knowledge of the Australian race and endorse his brilliant season and his team to the second Sky. And they both favor a trial run of 100 kilometers (101.4 to be precise) and only two end up.

*****

Cadel Evans (BMC) . The dorsal one as last year's winner. The course fits your features and has a team at your disposal. His spring was gray, only victory in the Criterium International, although Dauphiné and showed his progression and was the only one who stood up to Sky to finish third.

Bradley Wiggins (Sky) . The British dominated, outright victories in Paris-Nice, Romandie and Dauphine. The 100 kilometer time trial in the Tour will benefit greatly and the mountain has some friends of luxury. Exhibiting in Dauphiné scary.

****

Denis Menchov (Katusha) . Second and third, is possibly at his last chance in a course not as hilly. Unlike Wiggins, his road to Liege has been almost unprecedented and Dauphiné was only 42.

Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) . Winner of the Tour of Spain and podium in the Giro d'Italia, Italy represents hope. Soon began to compete in St. Louis and Oman, and had a remarkable spring, winning Tirreno, third in San Remo and second in Liege. In California and was more irregular Dauphiné. Your trump card is the descents.

Alejandro Valverde (Team Movistar) . Four years later, returns to the Tour of Murcia with the ultimate goal, but the 100 km race against the clock clearly hurt him. His performance in the three weeks is a mystery after inactivity.

***

Janez Brajkovic (Astana) . Has the Tour between the eyes and has gone from low to high after playing seven rounds, Paris-Nice, Volta Catalunya won in Port Ainé-, Basque Country, Trentino, and began to grow in Romandie, 9, and Dauphiné, 7 before winning the Tour of Slovenia.

Robert Gesink (Rabobank) . The Dutch climber has improved in the time trials and comes after his victory in California and fourth place in Switzerland. It is your year to confirm what is expected of him or another disappointment.

Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) . The American veteran has a great quality but has experienced a season of setbacks, with declines in Paris-Nice and a hit before the Tour of Basque Country in which he fractured his fibula. In Switzerland and showed its progression in third.

Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) . Protagonist recent editions, the podium is your goal, what would be the icing on his career and his team. Second in Catalunya and got his first goal with a victory in the Basque Country. The drop in Dauphiné an ordeal made him live but he is the ideal apparently after being concentrated in the Sierra Nevada.

**

Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda-Sharp) . Sprung a surprise with his well-deserved victory in the Giro and has not competed since, but says to get ready.

Frank Schleck (RadioShack-Nissan-Trek) . Autodescarta himself after competing in eight events staged, Majorca, Andalusia, Paris-Nice, Criterium International, Basque-plus-Ardennes, Giro (until the 15 th stage), Luxembourg and Switzerland.

Jurgen Van den Broeck (Lotto-Belisol) . Quietly, the Belgian wants to storm the podium of the Tour. 4 th in Algarve, 3rd in Volta, 12 º and 5 º Basque Country in Dauphiné. Maybe that's your limit.

*

Ivan Basso (Liquigas-Cannondale) . Consistency is your best guarantee against time and his great handicap, although in principle come to escort Nibali. The Giro could only be the fifth and in the lap of the Italian Championship Cataldo lost about 3:25 ...

Chris Froome (Sky) . Bullet in the chamber of Sky. He has competed very little in 2012, but the runner of the Tour 2011 and was an escort of Wiggins in Dauphiné.

Chris Horner (RadioShack-Nissan-Trek) . The question of his team, after being with foot and a half out of nine of the Tour. It takes a while irregular, second in Tirreno, ninth in Paris-Nice and eighth in California. It may be capable of anything.

Andreas Klöden (RadioShack-Nissan-Trek) . The German takes an unprecedented season. His best finish was 18th in Paris-Nice and Switzerland alone was 34 °.

Bauke Mollema (Rabobank) . Third in the Basque Country and Top 10 in all Ardennes classics, lowered its performance in Romandie, 17 °, and Switzerland, 33 °. It comes as the alternative to Gesink.

Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) . As that Basso could not get the pink in the Giro and the Tour commitment despite the time trials. Gave a good feeling in the Italian Championship.

A good article there even though the premise is so.obviously wrong since Andy would have made the mountains harder which is precisely the opposite of what  wiggins needs.

Interesting to read that Wiggins and Sky in general are talking very little to the media/press which is the complete opposite of Evans and BMC.
