Title: Leg shaving for dummies
Post by: Anthony Moan on June 07, 2012, 13:00
Ok I am about to shave my legs second time in a week, just before race.
I always find myself in trouble around knees you know ;D, so is there any special way to avoid wounds. I use razor and shave foam, yes Full Monty.
Ladies this is cry for help and serious topic, so please trolls, spammers and usual trouble makers avoid it.
Thanks!

i find shave foam pretty crap for legs..

tend to just have a good soak in the bath, and then rub in laggings of shower gel, you can see what you are doing better and its more slippy and slidy

I dont do any of that. Simple stand in shower and make sure water is running over section being shaved.  Razor of choice is a Gillette mach 3.  Has 3 blades and small lubricating strip which is enough to do the job.

One tip.  Do not bend knee when shaving it.  It stretches skin over front and increases risk of a rash or cut.

If my new bike ever arrives, I will be reinitiating myself into this fine activity that you can never talk about with anyone other than cyclists and cool women.

Way back when, I used to use a disposable Bic and soap (I wasn't even shaving my face at that time).

Now I will use my fancy imported, non-foaming Australian stuff (all the best skin products are Australian because of their ozone hole) with a spanky Wilkinson Sword razor I bought for the job.

I refuse to use Gillette because they test on animals. Consider yourself notified, Martin. :police:

Finally, the question nobody has asked and which genuinely intrigues me is this: how often?

Is it like with beards where some Neanderthals have a five o'clock shadow (or "moss chops", if you prefer) within seconds of shaving? Or is it better just to keep up to it like lawns or ladies, because it's harder to manage once it's got beyond stubble?

I was thinking that waxing could be a good idea. Is that the one with the tearing of strips that hurts like a crucifixion or is it the nice simple wash-and-go thing? I never know. There's electrolysis too...

To get a really close shave the skin needs to be warmed. so have a warm bath then shave, or a shower that is almost a sauna (my fav type). Hair conditioner is a recommendation, why i have not got a clue but a few have mentioned it.

Otherwise leave them hairy  8)

right waxing hurts like flip if you are remotely hairy

Shaving is easy if the hair is not long, shower 1st

water in a bucket or bottom of a bath, shaving cream take your time

I don't shave, proper man with the hair.

Plucking's the way forward, then pour some hot oil over it.

Seriously, shaving I'd think is easiest no? Or go Brazilian, and take a pic.

LOL   ;D ;D ;D

No waxing for men's legs.... :D

you don't have to shave in the shower....you can rinse razor with hot or warm h20 and carefully and simply shave legs without all sort of goo on legs...ugh

martin I disagree...unless you bend your knee and carefully shave in direction of hair you will really hack up your skin  :o

anyway, one more opinion  :)

coconut body lotion rocks! !   ;D :wave

I am terrible at it. i usually use a set of clippers to remove the majority of hair if i have not done it for a while then sit in the bath and shave off the rest with a razor

generally i shave really carefully for ages then get out the bath, dry myself walk around a bit, look at legs. still covered in hair

as an alternative may i suggest this product

Never been an issue - also, I only shave against the grain.  I used to shave with the hair direction first but have found that to be a waste of time.   I simply start at the ankle and shave up the leg, doing lower leg first, Upper leg, then more carefully all the way around the knee area.

I did have a track sprinter mate who had problems due to his muscle size and definition.  He had to bend his leg or he couldnt ge tthe razor deep enough in the area above his knee to remove the hair properly.  (We used to call him Trunk - as in Tree-trunk legs)

Well I don't shave my entire leg in the direction of hair growth only the little knee area when bent  ;D

I actually do not have tree trunk legs  :o :D

Buy a womens wet or dry electric razor.

Its not as close a shave as with a razor ...but has one tenth of the hassles.   It takes about 3 minutes, can do in the shower or out, no soap/foam/gel/smelly crap, knees are easy ...

Still - I would pay money to watch you wax  ;D

Ok I am bored to death. Yesterday I realized that leg shaving has also very very practice purpose, not for  a Thai massage, but for cleaning and treatment wounds.
First nurse has got that look in her eyes which tells everything: " Thanks God hairless dude" ;D and I was thinking:" No razor thingie is needed for Tony Mrs.Nurse"
Second nurse who s preparing me for stitching thingie was also thinking same, I just know it ;D
Of course Tony got phone numbers :fp

But, but, but, I must do The Full Monty, I mean arms, coz having those duct tape bandages on hands trouble when they must go off :fp
So who here shaving arms too and how to do it?

i do not shave arms but appreciate the bandage thing. injured my leg once playing Ultimate and the guy who went to bandage it said, sure you do not want to shave it first. said no as wanted to get back on pitch.

took an hour in the bath with tears in my eyes to get that bandage off

Ok I did it for tomorrow TT, total hairless human!
I move it from medical/estetic level to the performance shaving level. New stuff for sure.
Eyebrow, lash thingie, I mean everything, 2 months old baby has more hair.
I except more speed than ever, and I will make my observations for sure. As a matter in fact at one moment I hope that I will expand myself to beyond this world and even fly. Together with blutto home made doping advice it can not be done more for sure.
Will make my thoughts tomorrow, and if I am right, this is the Thing!

What kind of nose do you have, if it's a really big one big a bit like Andy, it's really aero but not such a good idea when there are really strong wind gusts from the side, it will be like riding with closed wheels and you will be like Andy in Dauphiné time trial.. was that because of the disk wheels or the huge nose.

Finally someone, ram you are math guy what do you think about nose job, I mean it could help also?

Depends, it is a weighted mean between sex life and aerodynamics. Though if you like less friction, make it like Pinocchio and tell a lie.

I've started to shave again and in doing so, I am reliving the enormous irritation of the whole exercise.

Mrs L'arri in her pre-L'arri years already lived with a cyclist, so she knows the drill, and she takes every opportunity to taunt me with the horrible words no self-respecting male cyclist wants to hear: "Ha, you missed a bit".

And she's always right. I cannot get 360 degree mastery of the leg, especially around the hamstring and back of the knee. Even when she has other things to do, I'll be sitting in my favourite Oxford armchair with a glass of Sancerre happily awaiting the haddock chowder to finish simmering and there it is, a small but glaring patch of unshave, destroying my brief moment of comfort and contentment.

I stopped again recently as a reflex to the unusually cold weather.

Tell you what though: I am thinking about having them waxed like the ladies do. It's just too much of a chore and I think men are just a bit shy of the stigma so they stick to shaving at home when the process could become unnecessary.

That said, I know little about that particular domain, mostly for the reasons cited, and I would like to know more first.

Pros and cons, anyone?

I have a low pain threshold. But these places are usually run by caring ladyshapes, right? How unpleasant can it be?

Thanks, AG. Are they nice and close on the shave and do you have to replace the blades a lot?

close enough - but not anything close to waxing - but it doesnt hurt either (I am a wimp).  You still have to do it fairly often.

Blades dont need replacing often - I dont think I have ever replaced them - just bought a new shaver  :D

But the good thing about shaving is you get rid of the dead skin etc, feel fast  :lol

Waxing last longer but you don't get the same feeling

This is something I have yet to attempt! I mean I don't think there is nothing wrong with it but my fellow local rednecks, well I will be called all sorts of not so nice names, lol. However, I got them to stop making fun of me for wearing bike shorts... I just started wearing ones that had wild colors ;) they got the drift and left me alone, >_<

I don't know if I'd like shaving though -- anyone tried something like nair?

How often do you need to wax?

I was just shaving once a week. This is now only of historical interest because I quit when I broke my foot on account of feeling sorry for myself and I haven't done anything like that since and then it later transpired that a preference was expressed for how it had become.

I thought it worth resurrecting this thread if only to discuss aftercare a little more, now that summer has reached our part of the world.

One thing I learned more recently was to scrub really hard afterwards with a mitten or whatever, doing a proper ex post facto exfoliation. That prevents any of those ugly red spots one sometimes gets in hotter weather.

This is, of course, very drying for the skin, so I apply 100% aloe vera gel to the whole area and let it dry to a smooth shine. This is a slightly expensive approach to aftercare but it is very effective for the skin and only needs to be done once after shaving.

Post by: Drummer Boy on July 12, 2020, 21:29
I've been doing a bit of an experiment this season. For the first time I tried using an electric Norelco razor. I thought it might be interesting to try one leg with the Norelco, and one leg with a blade, for comparison.

What I found was fairly consistent with what I already knew:
Blades shaves closer than electrics. But...

12 to 24 hours later, and there's really not that much difference in either leg.

So I tried one more variation:
I've been shaving the top part (above the knee) of both legs with a razor, because it's really quite easy to do in the shower with just some soap and water, and I prefer the extra-close shave in the region that makes contact with bike shorts. But bending over in a shower to reach the lower leg has never been good for my back. So I've been saving the lower leg and the ever-troublesome knee region for the electric. I can perform this easily and comfortable while sitting on my bed, or in a chair with my leg elevated.

So far, I'm happy with the results, with no annoying razor cuts to my knee.

The face, however, only gets the blade. Can't stand the feel or the results of the electric on the most conspicuous real estate.

Carry on... :P
