Connect the Dots - Transfer Predictions 2022/23
« on: May 21, 2022, 20:11 »
The 'Transfers and Rumors' thread very much is full of news from other sources. This is a more speculative version of the same thread, asking "who should go where?"

...or as it's been said in previous years' threads, "predict the transfer before the rumour".

This PCS page is quite a useful starting point to see who might be on the move, but it should be taken with a pinch of salt as contract lengths are not always known.

Some possible topics to discuss? Arkea and Alpecin moving up to WT. Surely they'll need to bulk up their squads a bit. Going in the other direction will anyone want to cherry pick riders from Lotto or IPT?

Let's start with Alpecin and this timely interview with one of the Roodhoofts.

    https://twitter.com/WielerFlits/status/1528073947228655616

    Quote
What is the type of rider on your wish list?

“We especially want to strengthen our core for the classics. We don't currently have any real classification riders on our long list, but there are also guys on our list who allow us to participate in areas where we don't participate at all. I'm talking about guys who can go uphill, but aren't GC riders. Who can score in Liège-Bastogne-Liège or in Lombardy. Or even in a mountain stage in a Grand Tour.”

I think that with Merlier heading to Quickstep that another sprinter would be needed too.

    Classics - Eekhoff, SKA, Vermeersch

Stage Hunter/Hilly Classics - This is a bit more difficult. Teuns and Wellens jump out, but would no doubt cost a bit. SKA could cover this area as well.

Sprinter - Dekker from Jumbo? Must have been injured/crashed or something the past couple of years as his race days are limited. Fair turn of pace and as young wouldn't mind heading to the Giro/Vuelta.

Well, it's behind the paywall[1], so I can't tell you who is given as options, but once you eliminate the teams who don't really go in for sprints and the ones who already have a big name for the TdF then the realistic options are very limited I think.

#israel If they get relegated and miss out on the two automatic wildcards as well, then this could be a way to almost guarantee an invite to the Tour in 2023 at least.

#lotto Ditto as above, but only if Ewan moves on. Wellens switiching teams and Gilbert retiring would free up a fair bit of salary.

It's a bit of a struggle to think of anywhere realistic after that. Cofidis? Leave the SSRs to Coquard. Arkea? Already a little bit of a British enclave there but what about Bouhanni. DSM? Doesn't really fit in with their ethos. Back to Bahrain? Dunno if Colbrelli is retiring or not.

He didn't really tell us much that "secret agent man". :playlist

But yeah if Ewan is on the market, surely Cavendish will then only be second choice and thus have his options limited. Retirement might be the best option rather than going to a team which can't really back him adequately.

After his help to Pog on Tour stage 5:
    Alberto Bettiol #ef --> #uae

He has a contract with EF through 2024, but if they should get relegated, he can get out of that.

[Aniolkowski's) journey started at the age of 14 when he would ride with his friends around their village. To this day, the group are all racing in the elite ranks including a yet-to-be-announced new addition to Human Powered Health.

One of the Banaszeks? Norbert at a guess?

No Zuk, so we can only assume he's off to IPT.

So anyway where's Onley gonna end up? Cause you just know DSM will tell him he needs to do another year in the devo squad.

It seems that the team (ATT) should not stop in its rise even in the following year. Although Mika Heming is leaving, Jakub Otruba and Daniel Turek are coming. At the level of a clear verbal agreement, two more reinforcements are ready, both from abroad, including one from the ProTeams level.

An Estonian? There's the Turek-Raim link of course, but maybe Pajur is a more likely target.

The article is about Babor and Caja mainly. However at the end they do mention that Aular is on his way to WT. I think I had heard a rumour about this previously and didn't give it much credence, but here it is in black and white.

Astana I guess? Maybe EF, but difficult to see many WT avenues for him to choose from.

Kukrle might on their radar now as well. Nothing seems to have come of his reported move to PCT - was it B&B?

The non-PCT foreigner who is joining ATT looks to be Gert Kivistik (not the most exciting of palmares it has to be said). He's present at the team gathering that has just started.

Hs nationality could lend credence to Raim joining, but Marton Dina is coming up hard on the rails. Maybe some more news tomorrow.

Spotted a familiar looking mullet in an instagram clip that ATT re-posted yesterday and if that's not enough Jauzy says he's joining them and if you still don't believe it, Raim posted a clip of the Czech flag on instagram today.
