2022 Vuelta CQ Game
« on: August 09, 2022, 21:28 »
Whatever might have gone wrong (or right) in the Tour de France, or for whatever reason one was missing from it, there is one main chance left to redeem the season for those who specialise on stage races, whether they are cyclists, teams, sponsors or participants in forum-based fantasy leagues: La Vuelta a España.

The time has come to give your prediction skills one final spin, and so, once again, I invite entries of teams of 8 riders who will take place in the Vuelta, whose collective CQ score1 for the last 12 months 2 does not exceed 3500.

Entries can be sent to me right up to the start of stage one (18:30 Spanish Dutch time on Friday 19th) by PM at VeloRooms or Cycling News3

Teams will score the points gained by their riders according to the Cycling Quotient scale4: the decision made by that website will determine any controversies.  There will be daily (or at least near daily, I do have some travels booked during the race...) updates, and a minor classification based on stage points only for those who rashly fill their team with sprinters.

Hopefully any questions will be met by the footnotes below, if not, drop me a note.

It's just a bit of fun and a sidebar of interest during the race (unless you are competing at the top of the 4 seasons championship, in which case it is deadly important), so have a go.

1) If you don't know cqranking.com, it really should be one of your bookmarked pages, and these games are very much indebted to it.

2) Points are gained, and expire, on CQ ranking (almost) daily, but I operate according to the downloadable tables that are usually made available on Mondays.  So the prices should be the scores to Sunday 14th, as contained in the download on Monday 15th.  HOWEVER, CQ have been a bit late with this on some weeks recently, so if that is not posted on their site by 6 pm UK time on Monday, I will revert to the previous download, of prices to Sunday 7th.  I shall make in clear in this thread, and the prices will be available from the downloads page on CQ Ranking, on each rider's page (but watch out for those daily fluctuations), from a team selection spreadsheet available here  A lists of prices will also appear on this thread as the team naming nears completion.

3) Please make my life easier by sending names in CQ's format (surname forename) with nothing else on the same line (I already know their teams and prices).  If you have are overbudget or choose a non-entrant, I will alert you to it as soon as I can: that's trickier if you leave your entry until the last minute.  I have an established pattern for making replacements if you don't, but probably don't want to enter into that lottery.  I will send my team asap to the first entry after prices are confirmed (which is usually, but does not have to be, Comodoro).

4) The full scale of points is on CQ (column GT2 here, and on the selection spreadsheet, but in short 500, 375, 315 dropping to 15 for 51st or any other finisher on GC; 70, 40, 25 down to 1 for 10th in each stage (truncated quarter of that for TTT) and also for points and KoM categories, and 18 for the overnight leader.

CQ has posted the download, so prices for the game are as of yesterday (14th Aug).

13 out of 23 teams have confirmed their teams, so time to start thinking seriously about your selection.

In case you missed it hidden away in footnote 2 above, here is the selection spreadsheet

To quote the OP (footnote 2) "So the prices should be the scores to Sunday 14th, as contained in the download on Monday 15th".  His price in the download on Monday was not changed by today's news, so while he might be cheaper in my games next year (I don't know how Search will rule in the main season game), he is still at the published 1124 for La Vuelta.

I actually assumed that would be the case, not that I was even considering selecting him. ;)

However, I am not so sure whether or not his DQF should effect the TDF game. I am guessing no....

PEÑALVER ANIORTE Manuel is a non-starter after a Covid test: 2 teams had him and managers have been PMed.  Still a couple of hours to submit your Penalver-less teams...

    The teams

We have 34 of them (which is about average in these games).  Most of the old hands are here, but Kazistuta and Josedin, 4th and 5th in the Four Seasons challenge, haven't sent in a team thus forfeiting those positions, and we have a couple of newbies in BR2 and Pman, so welcome to them.

Some team adjustments as  riders who were expected to ride have dropped out of the listings, with Blues in the Bottle being thus forced to change his team about 5 times; I'm willing to give DJW a bit more time to see if he has a replacement for Penalver other than the default of Jose Diaz.

So with that proviso, here are the teams:

    Riders
There should be 184 riders, but due to covid and tramodol there are only 182.  79 of them are in our selections, and of those 35 are unique picks indicated above with an asterisk.

The rest, with the number of teams selecting them, are:
    22 teams:LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
    19:  CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio
    15:  CARTHY Hugh
    13:  VAN WILDER Ilan
    12: O'CONNOR Ben
    11: ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves
    10: KELDERMAN Wilco
7: BENNETT Sam, FROOME Chris, HINDLEY Jai, YATES Simon
    6: GEOGHEGAN HART Tao
5: ARENSMAN Thymen, CARRETERO MILLAN Hector, LANDA MEANA Mikel, MAS NICOLAU Enric, SWEENY Harrison
4: AYUSO PESQUERA Juan, CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban, FABBRO Matteo, LANGELLOTTI Victor, MALECKI Kamil, SIVAKOV Pavel, STEWART Jake
3: DE GENDT Thomas, DIAZ GALLEGO Jose Manuel, HAMILTON Lucas, IMPEY Daryl, KUSS Sepp, PETERS Nans, SOLER GIMENEZ Marc, URAN URAN Rigoberto
2: BRENNER Marco, BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago, DENNIS Rohan, EINHORN Itamar, FERNANDEZ ANDUJAR Ruben, GROVES Kaden, HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres, ITURRIA SEGUROLA Mikel, MCLAY Daniel, ROGLIC Primoz, VINE Jay, WRIGHT Fred

Those marked with an asterisk are the Collective Wisdom team.  It actually comes in quite a lot below budget at 3037, but even by averaging out a few riders, including Almeida, Hindley or Yates would have put that team well over the allowance.

    Major picks
The riders on each team that cost 700 points or more:
    Roglic:      DJSprtsch, Yellow Knight

Evenepoel   with Almeida:   Evans is the Best

    Hayter   with Carapaz:   Bicycle Boy

    Alaphilippe:      Redhead Dane

    Higuita   with Carapaz:   Zigzag Wanderer
       with Yates:   Search

    Hindley   with Almeida:   Armchair Cyclist
with Carapaz:   Los Brolin, Pman, Rote Laterne
       with Yates:   Rufs
          Archie Boy, Northerner

Almeida   with Carapaz and Yates:   18-Valve, Blues in the Bottle
       with Carapaz and Mas:   Salvarani
with Carapaz:   Amis Velo, Comodoro, Scrooll07
BR2, Del 1962, Jumbo Visma Fan

    Carapaz   with Yates:   Madrazo, TRiley36
with Mas:   Bonimenier, DJW, Mellow Velo, Otoxiep 87
          Laarsland, Leadbelly

    Yates:      Vladimir

Titan31 has a much more egalitarian team, with O'Connor (642) as his most expensive pick.

I haven't got time to do a team similarity chart, and once there is other results data in the spreadsheet it becomes almost impossible, so we'll have to forego that one this time around.

    Stage 1 TTT
No-one has Dennis, and the CQ points for TTTs are a bit odd, so can't say who has made the best start, but Yellow Knight, who is I believe the only manager with two JV riders, will probably be up there.  To follow...

    Stage 1: TTT in Utrecht

CQ Points for a team time trial are a quarter of the stage position points, but rounded down (rather than rounded to the nearest whole number), and only to those who finish with their team group.  So Peter Serry, who finished ahead of anyone from Bike Exxchange, gets 0 while the BEX contingent each get 3.
    1.      Jumbo - Visma         17pts
GESINK Robert, ROGLIC Primoz, AFFINI Edoardo, TEUNISSEN Mike, HARPER Chris, DENNIS Rohan, KUSS Sepp, OOMEN Sam
    2.      INEOS Grenadiers         10pts
VAN BAARLE Dylan, CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, HAYTER Ethan, SIVAKOV Pavel, PLAPP Lucas, GEOGHEGAN HART Tao, RODRIGUEZ CANO Carlos
    3.      Quick Step - Alpha Vinyl Team         6pts
EVENEPOEL Remco, ALAPHILIPPE Julian, VAN WILDER Ilan, CAVAGNA Rémi, MASNADA Fausto
    4.      Team BikeExchange - Jayco         3pts
YATES Simon, GROVES Kaden, O'BRIEN Kelland, HAMILTON Lucas, DURBRIDGE Luke
    5.      UAE Team Emirates         2pts
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves, OLIVEIRA Ivo Emanuel Alves, MCNULTY Brandon, POLANC Jan, SOLER GIMENEZ Marc, AYUSO PESQUERA Juan, ACKERMANN Pascal
    6.      Groupama - FDJ         1pt
PINOT Thibaut, MOLARD Rudy, ARMIRAIL Bruno, STEWART Jake, REICHENBACH Sébastien, PACHER Quentin
    7.      Bora - Hansgrohe         1pt
HINDLEY Jai, KELDERMAN Wilco, MULLEN Ryan, VAN POPPEL Danny, HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres

Green points ie stage points, our minor classification.
I was wrong about Yellow Knight being top with 2 JVs: Archie has a JV, 2 Ineoses , a Bike Ex and a Bora

    Red points
This is the main category, with GC, race leader, minor classification (but not young rider) points all thrown in as well as the stage points, and at this stage of the race almost entirely meaningless.

Roglic was 2nd over the line, so with no-one having selected Gesink, it is no surprise that the two teams who spent 70%+ of their budget on that one rider are the top two tonight.

I am away for a few days, travelling light so I won't have a laptop and have no intention of trying to juggle a large spreadsheet on my phone, so I'm afraid the next update will be on Wednesday morning, to report on three stages (but not stages that anyone is expecting to be very definitive for the final standings) .  So you will have to wait with baited breath for that.  And because I need to make an early start, I won't be able to do the tidying up of the spreadsheet tonight, so I'm afraid you'll have to wait those few days before I share that link too.  I'm not expecting any other interruptions to service during the race after that though.

Enjoy the Dutch introductory stages and the first views of Spain.

    Red Points, the main classification.
If my flight hadn't been delayed and the roads in such a state last night, I might have been up earlier today to post the standings as of last night, which might have been more realistic, with names that were kind of plausible in the top ten of GC.  But because of my travel woes and subsequent lie in,  this is now a tale of the changes from stage 1 to stage 5, with the top of GC taken by the breakaway riders who surely cannot expect to defend their current projected points.

    Rider changes since the TTT
(not all of them, only if the change => 40 points and they have been selected for the game)

    WRIGHT Fred      385      2

The changes to key positions should start (or continue) tomorrow.

I should be able to manage normal service from here on, with daily updates.

The interforum challenge stands at VR  557,  CN 519  and the spreadsheet (which still needs a bit of tidying up) is on Google Docs here, and at the same location throughout.

Stage 7 Plateau after the climb, and mistimed chase.

As frequent players will know, break away stages (unless they are Aquila like) will, like sprint stages, yield stage (green) points, but do very little else for the red competition.

    Green points
And not necessarily even a lot of green points

The top three (and 5th and 11th) have Enric Mas, while the shortage of other points available to spend keep the only team with Evenepoel (Evans is the Best) down in 7th.  A huge spend on Roglic can still let you get Geoghegan Hart and Soler for 4th (or have Dennis as your second best scorer and leave you in 23rd)

(There was an issue with the spreadsheet yesterday, and I think Soler's points were under-reported: that might account for part of the ten place rises of MV and Vladimir)

Langellotti is a DNF, but his points from stage 5 mean that he will finish in profit in the race, which probably only a handful of others will do, as well as giving his managers the chance to pick a team that would otherwise have been over budget.

Although the top three teams are all on Team VeloRooms, the lead swings to the CN Forumites (717 to 702)

Roglic and Geoghegan Hart beat Evenepoel's point haul for the day.

Mas and Bennett were mainly why DJW had been top: they are also the reason why he takes the biggest losses on the stage.
Although the support from Almeida is rather less than the 11 managers that picked him might have hoped for, that is all the meaningful support that Evenepoel has in bringing Evans is the Best to the top of the table.

Evenepoel can only lose points in the GC projections, and is unlikely to gain the 30 possible extras he would get by overtaking Pedersen in the green jersey, but he might have another 180 red jersey bonuses to come, plus whatever stage points and improvement in the KoM ranking might come his way.  So who has the riders who can combine their earnings in weeks 2 and 3 to stop this being a one-rider victory?

At least the interforum challenge is close: VR regain the lead 730-714

Two riders DNS today, each of whom performed well yesterday and might have given their respective managers some hope for extra points to follow.  But no-one suffers the double whammy of having both, and the highest placed to be staring wistfully at a gap in the GC points column is Vladimir in 7th.

And although it is not quite a zero sum game, it is (if we exclude any weighting as to how many times, if at all, a rider is selected) only a -15 point per rider sum game, then others gain from their riders moving into vacated GC spots.  Del 1962 crosses the start line today 103 points better off than he crossed the finish line yesterday.

I won't be able to do stage 11 update (including the effects  of DNSs/DNF) until early afternoon tomorrow (Thurs).  Sorry.

Collective Wisdom would be up in 7th, having also had today's top two.

    Red points
A lot of the points that were gained as riders moved up yesterday to fill the places of Yates and Sivakov are reversed today, with Kelderman and Polanc overtaking so many in GC.

Northerner and Bminchow share their top scoring 4 riders, so I had to go to the 5th one for the tiebreaker.

All three teams that overtake EitB today have Mas, Lopez and Carapaz; DJW and Bonimenier both also have Kelderman as their second best scorer, while Mellow Velo's second highest rider is officially the second best sprinter in the Vuelta: Marc Soler.

Have to say I was fearing for the rest of the game with the Bennett DNS and Arensman looking very unwell after the ITT. Still a long way to go but was distinctly pleased to see Kelderman and Carapaz at the front of the break when I turned on with 10k to go today  :D

Stage 14 first of the Sierra double, and signs of vulnerability

    Green points
    lots of them
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio      70      19
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel      40      22

    EVENEPOEL Remco      3      1
    AYUSO PESQUERA Juan      2      4

I'll show a bit farther down than usual, because it sems churlish to deny someone who has 1st and 2nd a mention.
The top 4 all have Carapaz, Lopez and Almeida: Salvarani additionally has Mas.

Stage 15 Sierra Nevada, but not much snow at these temperatures.

    Green points
Another day when plenty of points are scored, with all bar one of the top ten selected.

    HINDLEY Jai      3      7
    MEINTJES Louis      2      0
