Cycling Tour of Szeklerland / Turul Ţinutului Secuiesc 2013

The Cycling Tour of Szeklerland, one of the most prestigious cycling events in Romania arrived to his 7th edition. Between the 7th and 10th August, cycling takes priority on the roads of Szeklerland. Within the competition which lasts three days, the racers will face difficult stages with many climbings and stunning sprints. The Cycling Tour of Szeklerland is organized by the city council of Miercurea Ciuc, Sfantu Gheorghe, Targu Secuiesc and Gheorgheni, respectively by the county councils of Harghita and Covasna, the County’s Sports and Youth Directorate, Tusnad Cycling Team and Ciuc Sports Association.

The race begins on Thursday as the cyclists will ride to Covasna county. There will be three intermediate sprints on the first day. They will take place in Tusnad, Targu Secuiesc and Sfantu Gheorghe. As well, the sportsmen will face a challenging climb at Pasul Nyerges.

The second race day includes the king stage of this year’s event. There are three B category climbings (Pasul Vlahita twice, Pasul Liban) and one C category uphill segment on the race map on Friday. The intermediate sprints from Vlahita, Gheorgheni and Miercurea Ciuc will bring much joy for the evolution of this stage.

The last day consists of two half-stages. On Saturday morning, the uphill individual time trial will cause difficult minutes for all the riders due to the mountain conditions in the arrival area. Beside this, the second half-stage starts at 5 pm in Miercurea Ciuc, goes through Racu and Frumoasa and finally arrives back to the town for completing a 17 x 5.5 km long circuit track on the streets.

so Velo 29 and CMI Greenover made it, although CMI had to borrow a bike and shoes from Tusnad.

Schäfer from Velo29 didn't start today though and several riders (mostly from the national teams, Moldova is down to 2 riders already) did not finish the stage or missed the time cut

Georgi Giorgiev from Team Brisasport just won today's MTF on the Hargitafürdő, which will also be used for the timetrial tomorrow.

An early escape group including Eduard Carol Novak (Tusnad), Der Zsolt (Utensilnord) and Quentin Bertholet (Wallonie – Bruxelles) was catched at the foot of the climb

Edit: Vitaly Buts (Kolss) came 2nd and Alex Braico (Tusnad) 3rd. Buts is still leading in gc

Stage 3a (MTT) / Report (gt):

Last day of the Tour Székely is by no means one of the protagonists race promenade, as I have been tempted to believe. Contretemps in climbing this morning seems to have been the most decisive step yet, standings undergoing some major changes. Ukrainian Vitaly Popkov (ISD) took revenge with a vengeance after two days removed from the point of view of the presence in the race and has now taken a serious option for the final victory. But for this you will have to overtake the winner of yesterday, Georgi Georgiev, now leader of the overall standings.

The first contestant left the race started at 10, but only just Denys Kostyuk (Kolss Cycling Team) set a really hard time to beat, 12 minutes and 44 seconds on the 5 km of route. Performance was good news for Ukrainians for Vitaly Buts is the most important stage in front of the standings.

But his co-nationals, Vitaly Popkov, and thwarted plans and probably also on other competitors. Twice winner and reigning champion of the Tour Székely, Popkov rose to fame won in recent years and achieved a time of 12 minutes and 16 seconds. It proved to be the best of the day, despite the excellent performance managed by Georgi Georgiev (12'34 ") and Laurent Evrard (Wallonie-Bruxelles) (12'40"). However, Bulgaria was the result of that morning was the most useful, as it managed to unseat Buts on the first step of the podium after he arrived in 43 seconds ago.

Also, Andrei Nechita (Romania) finished the race in just 36 seconds by Popkov, despite having evolved defective bike, rear derailleur cable becomes inoperative after the electronic system failed. Basically, Romania competed running on a single speed, provided that the 5 km climb to Harghita Bai included steep slopes and line, tight corners and Tread least demanding of concrete slabs. Therefore, Nechita fell to 5th place in the overall standings, 30 seconds separating it from the new leader.

The last stage of the Tour Székely 2013 program started today at 17. After a short journey via around Miercurea Ciuc, platoon will go 17 laps on a circuit arranged in the center of the stage totaling 130 kilometers.

Leader Vitaliy Buts lost ~1 minute to Popkov in today's timetrial so that 2nd place was enough for yesterday's winner Georgiev Georgi to take over the lead. But Popkov is just 7 seconds down in gc, so although stage 3b is not as hard as yesterday's, in a race like this - the field is down to a number of 67 riders - there could still be opportunities to get the overall victory.

Young belgian Laurent Evrard, who was already very active in last week's Tour de Wallonie, is now 3rd in GC after a strong timetrial.

I'd be mad as hell. He probably is, too. :boom
Is it just me, or do the electrical gears fail more often than the good old pull cables?

    Stage 3b / Report (gt):

"Ball" Tour Székely 2013 ended, as they usually consist of a round a street circuit in Miercurea Ciuc, but not before a brief detour through the city surroundings. Even if the overall standings was in danger of change, the fight that made headlines was to stake the stage victory. Fabio Belgian Polazzi (Wallonie-Bruxelles) has surpassed fellow escape and was the first across the finish line with a consistent advance towards them.

The first 30 kilometers of the stage, deployed outside the city were pretty nervous, but finally crystallized first break of the day. Sergiu Ciobanu, Ivan Stevic (both Tuşnad), Maksym Vasilyev, Anatoliy Paktushov (both FDI), Oleksandr Kvachuk (Kolss) and Federico Rocchetti (Utensilnord) head race held a large part of the stage, but without touching a menacing advance.

On the street circuit in Miercurea Ciuc, which measure 5 km lap and was covered 17 times the speed was dizzying, so that runners do not have too many chances to the firing Brisasport driven by team leader Georgiev. Spirits are hot and with about 6 laps remaining to finally recover and escape books remain Rocchetti and Steve, joined by sharing two of the Kolss Ukrainian Volodymyr Gomeniuk and Volodymir Zagorodniy.

Quartet not last more than one lap, and others start to escape. Marko Stankovic (Serbia), Oleg (EBRD Tuşnad), Fabio Polazzi (Wallonie-Bruxelles) and Krisztian Lovassy (Utensilnord) into the role. Cyclists are big rush and every mistake costs. Berdos falls, but recovers. But Lovassy forces and enters the last lap with Polazzi, to advance to their former colleagues now escape.

No more than 10 seconds, but the point of climbing the route is enough to tie. From the last corner before the finish, Polazzi out by yourself and have enough time to arrange for to properly savor the victory. Hung from Utensilnord have to settle with second place, while sprint squad is won by Yury Agarkov (FDI).

But the big winner is Georgi Georgiev (Brisasport), which according to him, did not see the state of this victory. Former cyclist of those in Tuşnad Cycling Team is facing his best result of the season, which can only increase his joy. Second place lies Vitaly Popkov (ISD), winner of last year failed to defend his title, while Belgium's Wallonia-Brussels will celebrate his 3rd Laurent Evrard and return the number 1 ranking teams. The best performance is achieved by Romanian cyclists 5th of Andrei Nechita, who competed in the last round on another bike.

Fabio Polazzi from Wallonie-Bruxelles won the final stage solo while his teammate Evrard secures the 3rd place overall, that trip to Romania turned out to be succesful for the belgian team. They also won the overall team classification. Georgi kept his lead from the timetrial and won the race.

Only a total number of 54 riders managed to finish the race - among them nobody from Team Moldavia and only one rider from each Bellotto, Velo29 and Team Romania. Quite remarkable that the remaining rider of all those teams finished inside the Top 20 - romanian champion Andrei Nechita from Team Romania could even have competed for the overall win without his mechanical in the timetrial
