Tour des Fjords 2013 - August 16th to 18th
« on: August 14, 2013, 15:23 »
Tour des Fjords 2013

After last week's Arctic Tour of Norway the racing in Skandinavia continues with the new established norwegian race Tour des Fjords. It takes place instead of the former one day race Rogaland GP and is categorized as UCI 2.1 stage race. 3 out of 4 stages finish in Stavanger

Parcours:

Stage 1: Valle - Stavanger, 205 km

The opening stage of Tour des Fjord starts in Valle in Setesdal and crosses over Suleskard in to finishing circuits in Stavanger.

A spectacular stage from Setesdal, the Suleskard road is only open during summer and crosses over the mountain to Sirdal. After a few kilometers a long and hard climb is guaranteed to invite break-aways and if the tempo is high splits may occur.

The route then follows Hunnedalen to Oltedal for the climb up Seldalsbakken and then descends Søredalen to Sandnes. The climb from Oltedal up Seldal comes 25 kms from the finish and might provide a launchpad for riders wanting to escape before the route enters Stavanger. Upon entering Stavanger there is one final ramp up Ullandhaug before the two circuits to the finishline.

Stage 2: Hjelmeland - Forsand, 103 km

Stage 2 takes us to the heart of Ryfylke. Hjelmeland hosts the departure and on their way to the finish in Forsand the riders passes through Fister, Årdal, Bjørheimsbygd and Strandalandet.

This is a short stage with several hard climbs. Riders on the attack not wanting any sprinters at the finish can make their race from 10 to 60 km. The beautiful scenery provides a dramatic setting for a stage that can be decisive for the overall standings.

Stage 3: Risavika - Stavanger, 24 km (TTT)

After the morning stage in Ryfylke, stage 3 is an afternoon team time trial (TTT) from Risavika in Sola to Stavanger city centre.

Team time trials are exiting high tempo stages that influence the overall standings. The team is given the time of their fifth rider across the finishing line, so all teams will have to be well coordinated in order to deliver their captains to a good result. This stage is wind exposed.

Stage 4: Egersund - Stavanger, 187,7 km

The final stage of this year’s TdF starts in Egersund, the departure for Nordsjørittet, and follows the coast along the ocean before it twists over the moors at Jæren to Ålgård and Gjesdal. There are five final circuits in downtown Stavanger where the riders will enjoy some cobbles as well.

Following the windswept coastline along southern Jæren and entring into a steady rise towards Undheim; this is one final occasion for escapees. From Ålgård to Gjesdal for one last visit up Seldalsbakken, dipping down to Høle along the Høgsfjord. The terrain from Høle past Bersagel to Hommersåk is rolling with several steep inclines and twists; yet another possibility for escapees.

Towards Sandnes the road flattens and the peloton might come together again before they enter Stavanger over Ullandhaug from Hafrsfjord.

The final circuit in Stavanger has a steep cobbled climb up Tidegeilen, after 150 kms this will hurt! Riders dropped here can forget about fighting for the win in the final sprint.

It does exist;  but it is only ~300-400 m long, going from ~9m to ~36m - so around 7-9%.
There are 11 km from the top to the finish line, including another ~1 km climb. They do that circuit 3 times apparently.

A picture, from last year's edition I guess:

And some pictures I found of Tidegeilen:

ah, thanks, yeah, I found it

    http://goo.gl/maps/PmFZd

right after the finish line, too bad

could still be an interesting race. Hushovd should be the favorite after having won the overall last week but the TTT is relatively long and the national team will propably struggle to keep him in touch

Joker-Merida should be strong in the TTT, do they have anyone who can fight for the overall? Breen maybe?

Would think Breen is eager to show he is worth his shiny new pro contract with Lotto Belisol.

I have updated the tv listings and the startlist.

the schedule on eurosport's website is confusing, but according to the official website there will be live coverage on all days, and also live streaming

there have also been some changes regaring the startlist. Team Concordia will not start at all, same for most riders who already did Tour de l'Ain earlier this week. So no Alaphilippe, van Baarle or Zabel, also Sandre Holst Enger will not start. But "norways big hope" Oskar Svendsen will line up for Joker-Merida.

And Team Norway will only start with 6 riders, so that could already be the end for Hushovd's hopes for the overall win.

    Result / Stage 1

pretty pathetic riding style from Chernetskiy, not doing a single turn in that breakaway group, but still, that was a good stage. And a great high quality webstream

Kristoff won stage 2 in a sprint, Nordhaug and Wisnowski tried to excape on the final kilometers but were catched with 200 or 300m to go. Good stage again with plenty of attacks

Neat little win there for Tulik and Chernetskiy has been threatening a big win for a few weeks already. Massive respect to the hoarse commentator doing occasional bits in English.  :yuush
