Brian McDermott sacked by Reading. Russian billionaire has pulled the trigger and fired his manager with just 9 games to go.

I am a Reading fan, born and raised in the town, and I wanted this like a kick in the shins. Almost no fans back the decision at all. For me, his only crimes have been overachieving last year and not overspending this year. To survive, we would realistically have needed better players almost all over the field. So many new players, in fact, that any sort of continuity or unity in the squad would be completely obliterated. As such, we'd need to have bought such good players that the complete lack of any familiarity or team spirit was overcome. In short, rather than spending a total of £ 4.9m this summer, an average of at least that much per player for the whole first 11 would probably have been necessary.

No manager good enough to keep Reading up would have gone near the job. The squad is a ragtag bunch of mid-level championship players who worked very well together last season but, as expected, have not made the jump up in quality. That is fine with me - I accepted long ago that we would be relegated. What is hard to accept is the awful treatment of a man who is quite clearly a good manager and seems for all the world like a good person too. Humble when victorious (which when Mikele Leigertwood makes your first eleven is not all that often) and gracious in defeat, I wish McDermott well.
