Was looking at photos and noticed Marco bike, whats is the "extra" handelbar thingy - for want of a better description

I guess it is a gear lever ?

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Those were the infamous Cinelli Spinachi bar extensions.  Basically a really minimal time trial set up that was legal for road use for a minute.  There was actually a campaign by Cinelli to make them legal again after the UCI banned them for road racing.  At the time mid-late 90's they were very popular amongst the average everyday cyclist though, but not this kid.

There was a definite period there in the late late 90s when the peloton looked somewhere between tasteless and clownishly silly. This pic sums it up for me: two greats of the time looking a bit daft at LBL. Bugno never seemed at ease post Gatorade under Stanga. For me he always seemed a bit lost by the time he went to Polti, whereas this is Pantani in his element. Two generations.

Bit OT, but the Spinaci were silly as it seemed to me then and still does today. :D
