So, we had a very traditional mountain stage but it was raced, at least out front, in a rather unusual way.
We say a number of attacks on penultimate, which lead to Frederico Figueiredo dropping his marker, Amaro Antunes and soling up to the small breakaway group. As the terrain continued to roll before the decent to the foot of the final climb, Antunes also joined the group up front.
The two GC men then set to work dropping their companions, while Efapel set about the chase for Joni Brandao.
As soon as the lead two were alone, Antunes stopped working and sat on 's wheel.
Meanwhile, you Brit, Simon Carr attacked from the small peloton and made an escape that was to stick. Had it not been for a mechanical, half way up the climb, he would have made the stage podium. As it was, Joao Benta, who had also made the break for home, managed to close the gap while Carr was off the bike.
In the last km, Antunes took off like a scalded cat and managed to put an incredible 22 seconds into Figueiredo in half a km. Benta roll over in 3rd, with the rest of the GC contenders choosing to sprint out the minor places, shipping considerable time in the process.
