Stage 14: Conegliano – Valdobbiadene 34.1 km ITT

The Giro d'Italia serves its second individual time trial on the thirteenth day of action. The hilly route amounts to 34.1 kilometres and features a wall-like climb of 1.1 kilometre at 12% early on.
From Conegliano to Valdobbiadene, start and finish are exactly the same as the ITT of the Giro 2015, except that that one was 59 km long. How times have changed!

The start ramp is located in Conegliano, a town of 35,000 people which is dominated by the ruins of a 10th century castle. The town also hosted the start of Queen Stage of the 2011 Giro, which was won by Mikel Nieve.

The route of this year starts with 6.3 km flat before entering the only climb of the day, Ca’ del Poggio (GPM4, 1.1 km at 12.3%)

The next sector measures 10 km of twisty but flattish roads up to the second checkpoint in Pieve di Soligo, after which the road gets easier until the third checkpoint in Col S.Martino. A false flat uphill of 5.5 kilometres takes the riders to the highest point on the route at roughly 350 metres before a 3 kilometres descent leads into Valdobbiadene. The final section is a short kick-up to the line.

This is the reason why some TT specialists are here, but they will have a tough time trying to better the flying Filippo Ganna, who starts as favourite to get to crack open a bottle of the local brew.

I wonder if #pink #quickstep Joãozinho will be able to extend his lead today? I sort of think #sunweb Kelderman is the both the greatest and the closest challenger

Has anyone found starting times for the riders?

yeah, they are all on Tissot

beating Ganna will probably be difficult today, unless there's a weather change. Some forecasts suggest wind conditions may be a bit more favourable later on, but some also say the opposite. We will see, I guess.

Kelderman's results hasn't quite been the same as before over the past years. No idea if this is injury-related in terms of just being a temporary issue, or of he has lost some of his abilities though.

Guys like Konrad or Fuglsang have mentioned that they will probably save themselves a bit for tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see if that's a general approach, or if some may go full out, and potentially pay for it in the mountains to come.

With Ganna, Dennis, Dowsett, Brändle, Campanaerts, Tratnik and the remaining GC contenders it is a decent ITT startlist actually. The competition for stage podium and top 10 should be intense enough for the winners to deserve it.  :cool
